We already have the Houston and New Orleans markets covered.

I could see Rice as a candidate for the PAC if they need to get into the Texas market without Texas. Texas Tech would be the bridge, T.C.U. would give them DFW, and then Rice would add Houston. Two of the three would be academically acceptable to the PAC and Texas Tech has already had talks with them to find out what they needed to do to improve academically in the PAC's eyes.
I don't see Tulane being a candidate for anyone but the Big 12, unless the ACC took them as a literal bridge between Tallahassee and Austin.
With the right kinds of movement from particular conferences Cincinnati, as Hawghiggs has stated before, could be in the mix as well. I also think that eventually B.Y.U. will nose in somewhere.
But, I agree with a post above in that Rice and Tulane are probably not in the mix for the SEC. When we add two more they will likely be flagship state schools.

RE: outside the box expansion canidates.
Rice is also a possibility as a 2nd Texas school for the B1G to land Texas. A very long shot, but a possibility. I could see Rice as an ACC school in the Wake Forest mode, as well, if Texas wanted more Texas schools in the ACC as a requirement for membership. Because of its academics Rice is a very remote possibility for almost every conference, if paired with Texas or in the perfect circumstances, such as a conference wanting more academic cred and/or TX TV market and doesn't care about taking on a small private. Rice would have to step up and spend money getting its programs up to speed, but Rice alums have the money to do it if they wanted.
I agree with JRSec about Tulane. Tulane really spit the bit when they left the SEC.
If you want dark horses for the SEC, assuming all the P5 stays intact and nobody is willing to move, that means you are looking at the G5. These would be my four dark horses for the SEC: UCF, East Carolina, SMU, and Cincinnati.
UCF and SMU work well, if the SEC wanted 2nd schools in very large states. They help with market saturation. UCF, plus UF puts the SEC in permanent supremacy over the ACC in FL. SMU would give the SEC a presence in DFW to pair with the heavy Houston A&M (and even LSU) foothold. Would definitely hurt the B12. Should see some increase in the SECN rates in FL and/or TX.
East Carolina gets the SEC into the coveted NC market for the SECN. With the SEC brand behind it, ECU football should be able flex some muscle in NC.
Cincinnati gets you into the Ohio TV and recruiting markets and would be a boon for the SECN. Would drive the B1G and OSU crazy having a SEC school in OH, even if it was a distant 2nd to OSU. Just like the B1G getting a school in VA or NC would do to the ACC or SEC.

I've liked the idea of SMU as a darkhorse SEC candidate, they're not up to Vanderbilt's academics, but they're no slouch either. The also have a unique history with Vanderbilt, as SMU was founded after the Tennessee courts stripped the Methodist church of its authority at Vanderbilt. Yes, Vandy was the original SMU.
I'm also an Aggie living in the DFW area and I wouldn't mind seeing A&M make more visits up here, so I admit I'm a bit biased there.

East Carolina is the ONLY school in North Carolina that the SEC would ever have a chance at adding.

I like SMU too for a number of reasons.
Good academics, good basketball and most important: both school and fan base actully physically located in the Dallas area. Having A&M, Arkansas, LSU, Auburn and Bama fan bases coming into Dallas weekly in the fall, renting hotels, eating at restaurants, drinking at bars will get the city firmly behind the SEC.
It would also turn the cross town Iron Skillet game with TCU into a really big thing again as a SEC vs B12 match up

Cincinnati versus Kentucky would also be nuts during basketball season. Both fan bases also travel well, so football could develop a nice rivalry (but would Cincinnati want the Keg of Nails game against Louisville during rivalry week, or would Louisville-Kentucky keep that spot?).

I agree that that would turn into a pretty fun rivalry, I would imagine ESPN has the SEC-ACC last-week deal set up for a while, so the UK-UL game will be locked in that spot, maybe UK plays Tennessee and Cincy and Louisville do the Keg of Nails game that same week under a scenario where the Bearcats are in league with us.

I would lean towards one of the upcoming Florida schools.

I agree that SMU would work. I also like ECU, but it needs to drop the "East" for branding purposes. A school that is very "outside the box" is ODU. The name alone sounds SEC. However, ODU has a long way to go with its football program.
