What if something like this happened?
1. ESPN gets a piece of the PAC and shares the overhead with FOX. Both help to increase the carriage and scope of the PACN.
2. ESPN lands the T1 Big 10 contract and shares rights with FOX that has the majority of the Big 10 Network.
3. Privates find it necessary to separate themselves from the publics for legal and economic reasons but find a healthy way to market themselves.
Then we could wind up with a P4 that looked like this:
Big 10:
Georgia Tech, Maryland, N.C. State or U.N.C., UVa or Va Tech
Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers
Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State
Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin
PAC:
Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State
Arizona, Arizona State, California, California Los Angeles
Colorado, Texas, Texas Tech, Utah
Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma
Privates (and Service Academies)
Army, Navy, Northwestern, Notre Dame
Boston College, Miami, Pittsburgh, Syracuse
Baylor, Duke, Texas Christian, Vanderbilt
Air Force, B.Y.U., Southern California, Stanford
SEC:
Kentucky, N.C. State or U.N.C., Tennessee, Va Tech or U.Va, West Virginia
Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina
Alabama, Florida State, Louisville, Mississippi, Mississippi State
Arkansas, Louisiana State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M
The privates is a dream conference for N.D. and between B.Y.U., N.D., and the service academies and the huge markets the conference reaches including the Armed Services Network, there is plenty to be made. Plus a PAC without U.S.C. and Stanford make a Texas and Oklahoma move even more palatable.
