I agree. I would love Mister in a way because he wants to be here. If successful, I don't think he would leave. However, I just don't think he has the resume either. I am rooting for him to build that resume so that he can be the next coach after (hopefully) this current hire is successful and taken by a larger school.

My guess, they already have someone -- just going through the proper protocol to announce the whole thing.

If I am not mistaken, Bartow (and Ezell) was originally hired by ETSU in mid-late April. I would guess this new hire would be announced around that same time frame, after the NCAA tourney.

RE: Next ETSU Men's basketball coach
Regardless of whom is hired as the replacement, there will be some who will be convinced that person is the wrong person for the job and that Dr. Dander has made an awful mistake. That is just the nature of the beast though. Personally I understand that change does not necessarily mean that success will be guaranteed. Things could go downhill from here without Bartow. I think the odds are good things will improve but understand it could get worse especially before it gets better. The time for a change was well overdue. I am ready for and excited about that change though and am prepared to live with the consequences whatever those may be.

I think we need to all prepare for a potential losing season next year while the dust settles and the new coach gets acclimated. I am hopeful that we will retain (and get) plenty of talent both in the coaching staff and players to negate that, but it's better to be prepared for the worst and get the best, instead of having our high hopes all completely crushed.

I agree too. I wouldn't mind seeing him in an assistant position but of course that is up to whoever becomes the head coach.

New Coach could potentially bring new players/recruits with them.

I really love his passion for ETSU. I'd like to see him as an assistant first though and I hope he can get an opportunity to be an assistant.

Best case scenario for Mister to be the head coach, bring in someone, say Morrell, have him build a nice program and stay for at least 5 years with Mister as an assistant. Morrell build something and moves on to bigger and better and Mister is seasoned enough at the point to deserve a chance.

This can be a bonus from hiring an assistant from a bigger program. The good ones continue to stay close to kids they may not really expect to offer a scholarship. Maybe those kids are a shade below other commits or maybe they don't have an opening at their position. But, a smart assistant keeps in touch with those kids because you never know when a recruit may decommit or a current player may transfer.

If a kid in that situation really likes an assistant, I think there's a good chance he would follow him to a new school.

They also often bring a transfer or two with them, a kid who didn't quiet make it at that level but would be a solid mid major guy, someone they probably recruited and have a relationship with them.
Works out for both teams, they get a scholarship freed up and the coach gets to take a player with him who knows his system and can contribute.

RE: Next ETSU Men's basketball coach
You know we have talked about Morrell a lot as a possible new coach but I am not really that sure of his resume, he really doesn't have that much time is as an assistant coach.

From VCU.

Quote:Head Coach Shaka Smart did not have to look far to fill his open assistant coaching position during the 2013 offseason.

Smart announced that Mike Morrell, the Director of Basketball Operations at VCU the past two seasons, was elevated to assistant coach. He will assume the position left vacant after Will Wade was named the head coach at UT-Chattanooga earlier this month.

"Mike has been a valuable member of our staff for the past two years," Smart said. "We're excited about him assuming this new role."

Over the past two years, Morrell handled the Rams' day-to-day operations, overseeing team travel, scheduling, practice schedules and more. During his two seasons with the Black & Gold, VCU has posted a 56-16 mark, including back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32.

"I couldn't be more excited for the chance to stay a part of this program and continue to help develop our student-athletes here at VCU," Morrell said. "I appreciate the opportunity that Coach Smart has given me and look forward to helping this program reach even greater heights."

Prior to his arrival at VCU, Morrell spent the 2010-11 season as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern, where he served as the program's academic and scouting coordinator, and handled the recruiting duties in the southern part of the country.

Morrell and Smart have a history together, working side-by-side during the 2007-08 campaign at Clemson on Oliver Purnell's staff. The Elizabethton, Tenn. native served as the Tigers' Director of Basketball Operations from 2008-10. He was a part of three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances at Clemson. He also spent two years as an assistant at King College in Bristol, Tenn.

Morrell was a two-sport standout at Milligan College in northeast Tennessee. He still ranks among the top-10 in school history for total points, tallying over 1,400 during his four-year career.

He graduated with a bachelor's degree in History from Milligan in 2005

For the people discussing Morrell as head coach with mister as an assistant, I can't imagine having a 31 year old head coach with little to no experience and a former nba player as an assistant being a successful arrangement. I'd be all for mister as the head coach, I think he could recruit the state and area well.

The D1 world has a TON of coaching talent. All the Mike and Mister talk is just myopic. And the Pitts talk is inane at best, laughable at worst. Mike is certainly in the conversation, deservedly so. Let's not let our fond memories get in the way of judgement in throwing Mister into a D1 coaching conversation.

Sander has earned our trust. Looking forward to hearing his decision. I think the fact that he is NOT rooted in ETSU ball is good. Won't see him misty eyed over that ONE win we had 30 years ago and jumping to talk Jennings as a head coach.

Steve Forbes has only been mentioned a few times in this thread but the more I read about him the more I like him.

Tim Cluess - Iona? Don't know if he would be a realistic choice but I certainly agree with his coaching philosophy. Check out the link and see why Mister Jennings would be an ideal assistant coaching candidate. It wouldn't be long before the Dome or Freedom Hall or wherever would be rockin' again.
