Next ETSU Men's basketball coach - Bucfaithful - 03-12-2015 05:41 PM

Let's start a thread for possible rumors or information related to candidates.

Also, what implications, if any, do you think this will have for our current roster? Will anyone leave (or not come) or will players be more likely to stay.

This decision is timely: We can get a new coach in here in time for Spring '15 signing period.

Names that I have seen mentioned today:

Barclay Radebaugh - Charleston Southern head coach - ETSU alum that was student assistant under Robinson

Mike Morrell - VCU assistant - Elizabethton native and Milligan alum

Steve Forbes - Wichita St. assistant - former assistant to Pearl at UT

Thinking Londell King and Jucos not committed will go elsewhere. Can Peter Jurkin jump ship without sitting another year?

I think we have a tight knit bunch of players. I wonder about Overstreet, but he has family within a few hours drive, plus he's pledged to a fraternity. Tommy Williams might actually stay now? It may come down ultimately to who that new coach is, whether anyone gets spooked or rubbed wrong. No input on that coach from me - not my expertise.

Petey tweeted that his mind was blown by an ETSU alert a few minutes ago. Guess they didn't have a clue?

Mike Morrell

RE: Next ETSU Men's basketball coach - etsubuc - 03-12-2015 06:08 PM

Morrell would be my choice. It wouldn't shock me if we have already have it picked out.

RE: Next ETSU Men's basketball coach - ETSU-07 - 03-12-2015 06:13 PM

Anthony Grant. If 'Bama drops him the VCU connection with Sander would be a strong pull.

RE: Next ETSU Men's basketball coach - Buccaneerlover - 03-12-2015 07:39 PM

Mike Morrell
Radebaugh
Seth Greenberg (Though the incompetent boob in compliance would probably quit)
Tony Jones
Jeff Capel
John Pelphrey
John Shulman (I can't imagine they'd go this way, but he's out there)
Keith Jennings (He's not ready, but I bet he'd take it in a second)
Ed DeChellis (I know it's a long shot and he makes more, but there's something to be said about being where you want to be)

Who I wouldn't want.
John Shulman
George Pitts
Anyone named Bartow
Buzz Peterson

Dream hire
Jeff Capel or Anthony Grant
Mike Morrell

I see the drumbeats for George Pitts already in multiple locations. Just STAHP with that. Dude's almost 70. I think we need a young and energetic coach.

Tony Barbee

RE: Next ETSU Men's basketball coach - etsuandpurdue3 - 03-12-2015 08:08 PM

Mike Morrell.

Morrell sounds intriguing, although I'd worry that he has no head coaching experience. But if Smart likes him, that should speak volumes.

I certainly believe we need a young, vibrant coach.

There's got to be a 0% chance of that happening I hope. We need a guy that's not looking for a job to retire from.

Lets see Byrd has been at Belmont forever and going to retire there. Millkop at Davidson, would love to have a coach come in and stay 20+ years and win those guys.

'lover mentioned this on another thread but I think Anthony Grant at Alabama would be a good candidate. He's not won at 'bama but I imagine it would be hard to at such as football-centric school.

RE: Next ETSU Men's basketball coach - Buccaneerlover - 03-12-2015 08:46 PM

Alabama is a tough situation. Coleman Coliseum is a dump, and they won't spend to either upgrade or build new. Football needs shower heads made of diamonds.
If Grant becomes available, they have to call.

He has had 1 losing season in 6 years and 3 20 win seasons,
That is seems to be pretty good for Alabama.

However, reports having him probably staying at Alabama. Even if he does get fired I see him landing much higher up the ladder then ETSU.

RE: Next ETSU Men's basketball coach - stategradsmoke - 03-12-2015 09:00 PM

1a. Mike Morrell
1b. Steve Forbes

So glad we have a forward thinking administration, now. ETSU has done a complete shift over the past 3 years.

Kinda the same deal as Bartow though. Not a ton of NCAA tournament appearances to show for it. If he should become available, make him say no.
