FYI... what does a (weak) indy team's OOC schedule look like:

NJIT's 2015 indy schedule includes 25 Div-1 games:
7 teams from the America East.
4 teams from the MEAC.
4 teams from the Northeast Conf.
3 Big East teams.
2 Ivies.
2 Patriots.
1 Big Ten.
1 A-10.
1 Sunbelt.

Also, they have only 10 home games out of 25 Div-1 games.
Home games: 4 vs AEC, 3 vs MEAC, 2 vs NEC, 1 vs Ivy.

And they have 4 additional games vs Div-2 or Div-3.
Saturday they're home to Sarah Lawrence.

compare that to say Farleigh Dickinson
28 D1 games
18 teams from the Northeast Conf.
2 Ivy
2 CAA
A10
B10
Patriot
ACC
BE
MAAC
so 4 real ugly ones- St Joe's(who they won), Rutgers, Notre Dame, and St John's. NJIT had looks like 5- St John's, Marquette, Michigan(who they won), Villanova, and Duquesne(who they won). Really not all that much difference.

NJIT had 9 home games after 1/1(5 vs D1). FDU had 9 home games after 1/1.

The difference isn't as much as you would think.

their home games-
9 vs NEC
Patriot
Ivy
CAA

Not a whole lot difference.

Main article: Miami Hurricanes men's basketball
The Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team has produced three players who are currently on NBA rosters. Rick Barry, who played his collegiate basketball at UM, is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. Barry is the Hurricanes' only consensus All-American in basketball and led the nation in scoring his senior year with a 37.4 average during the 1964–65 campaign. The team plays its home games at the BankUnited Center on the University of Miami's Coral Gables campus

Great player, one of My Youthful days heroes !

IIRC, Miami was independent in baseball until the school joined the ACC. They kept baseball indy when they joined the Big East for other sports.

Correct. The Big East was a hybrid conference in many ways.

Miami baseball was an independent. There was a Big East baseball conference but Miami opted not to join it.

As other posters have stated, total independence in this day and age is not realistic and FB independence is a tough road to choose. Assume UConn can move their Olympic sports to the Big East or the A-10, are those leagues significantly better than the AAC? A MBB league with a core of UConn, Cincinnati, Temple and Memphis is a better long term home.

This should give you an idea how tough it can be http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-16/2016-...hedule.php

9 games on the schedule so far and only 2 of them at home including I-AA URA already.

2017 is looking a little better with 9 games on the schedule and 4 of them at home. http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-17/2017-...hedule.php

Playing Independent is cool in that you have a degree of choice as to who you play and there are schools from all over the country on the schedule. But if you can't fill it out that is No Bueno.

Other schools with more than 2 years notice and a history of being in FBS would have a better chance of building a balanced schedule but without more Indy's out there it seems EXTREMELY tough in this day and age. Never mind the fact that kids don't have a chance to play for a conference title or bowl game makes it tougher on recruiting.
