Poor Boys Are More Likely to Fight, Lie, and Steal If They Live in Mixed-Income Area
Quote:Local governments are increasingly promoting mixed-income housing as a tool for fighting poverty, on the assumption that economic integration gives low-income children a better chance at overcoming poverty. New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, for instance, has set a target of building 200,000 affordable housing units in the city, and he wants them to be distributed throughout mixed-income and more affluent neighborhoods. “Our goal is really to foster more economically diverse neighborhoods,” Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, told the New York Times.
These programs rest on the assumption that mixed-income communities benefit low-income residents. Poorer children might profit from access to better neighborhood schools and facilities; the aspirations of their better-off, more future-oriented peers might rub off on them. Such a housing policy seems especially attractive when you consider that a child born into a low-income neighborhood has a 64 percent chance of moving down the socioeconomic ladder over the course of his life. Low-income neighborhoods suffer from higher crime rates, lower educational attainment, and poorer health; recent research even found a connection between growing up in a poor neighborhood and PTSD.
But a new paper in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry suggests that mixed-income housing has its own problems, too. A team of researchers at Duke University found that low-income boys in mixed-income communities are more likely than their peers in uniformly poor neighborhoods to engage in anti-social behavior such as fighting, lying, and stealing. The greater the economic inequality in the neighborhood, the worse the low-income boys in this study fared.

If you don't get to visit the ghetto enough don't worry the government will bring it to you.

Oh good. Nothing will push the middle class out faster than surrounding them with ghetto housing. That's the overall goal anyways when they talk about diversity.

Yea, that doesn't surprise me. The discussion of crime and poverty on another thread got me thinking. If you don't know you're poor, you're less likely to have a problem with it. If you don't have much but see lots of other people who have a lot more, I think for many the natural reaction can lead to crime, at least when combined with other factors.

That's because robbery is the easy way out. If you're too lazy to work, why not grab a gun (which you can't even shoot properly) and go hold someone up for a handful of cash, or sell some drugs on the street?

They are here.
http://brightwalkcharlotte.com/
This neighborhood is in the middle of the hood on the north side of downtown Charlotte. Houses in this neighborhood have been selling like crazy the last 2 years.
These aren't 300,000+ but many are in the mid-250,000's and they're bordered by ghetto too. http://www.ryanhomes.com/find-your-home/...ryant-park
Plenty of remodels and tear downs and rebuilds in areas that border ghetto areas here too.
In Charlotte, our poverty is slowly being exported to the fringes of the city where tons of cheap suburban style apartments were built when the inner city was not desirable. As those have aged, rents have dropped, and they're becoming magnets for poverty and now houses that are $300,000+ now have poverty encroaching on their territory because developers built cheap crap. This is going to be a major issue in southern cities over the next 20 years as the suburban apartment complexes that were built when land was cheap, age out and are no longer desirable to the affluent. Just to clarify, when I say suburban, I'm referring specifically to the style of apartment (also referred to as garden style) and not necessarily areas outside the city limits.
In 20 years, Charlotte is basically going to be a poverty sandwich. Wealthy in the inner city, poor on the fringes, wealthy in the suburbs, with some areas obviously being exceptions.

Yep. When a former ghetto gets gentrified, it's not like the poor people up and move to another city - they just slide over to the next most run down area of the same metro area and make that the new ghetto. Almost a form of musical chairs.
As for de Blasio's plans - just wait till the first nice area gets a chunk of section 8 housing and almost immediately the crime rates go up, the people living there that are paying their own way will have a fit or just move away like the above example.
The leftists haven't yet figured out how to force people with some money to stay in a crime infested sh!thole.

I think that is how most larger cities are. Downtowns are usually nice with a ghetto ring around it. Then you have smaller cities like Norfolk and Richmond that can go from decent to ghetto block by block like a checkerboard.
