Throughout this thread, I was assuming Rice had 2 open dates (like in 2014). Worth noting that only having 1 open date further limited scheduling possibilities (if Rice had taken an open date on 9/5).

Oh, has anybody suggested that?
We really, really, really don't want to start the season with an open date. The start of practice is based on the first game, so if our first game is a week later than everybody else's, then we spend the entire season with one less week of practice than our opponent.

That was one of the limitations that led to Wagner. We needed not just somebody who needed a game, but somebody who needed a game the first weekend.
And we needed a home game because the next 3 games are on the road.

It's been a few years since we've had 6 games at Rice Stadium I believe (not counting the 2013 season with the Marshall game addition). It's not a horrible schedule. I like the fact we have Louisiana Tech and Western Kentucky - who could be the preseason favorites in both divisions - at home. Playing Louisiana Tech on Halloween is cool and could feature a lot of cool promotions. I would hope that a majority of our home games (or at least half of them) will be night games this year. Just one regular season game out of the state of Texas too - that's also something that might not have been the case since our SWC days??

I am not happy with Wagner.
I am 100% confident that Dr. K made the best deal for us he could under the circumstances.
What I am wondering is how we got to the point of being nine months out from the opening date with no scheduled opponent. did somebody cancel, or has it just never been filled? If the latter, do we have any open dates in the 2016 or 2017 seasons that need to be addressed now, before we have to schedule Wagner again?
I'd also like to know the answer to this question. NMSU cancelled last year, and Karlgaard and staff did a good job filling them in with Hawaii. That said, did we somehow believe that NMSU would potentially be able to meet the back end of the home-and-home this year, or was that series considered dead in the water when they cancelled at the beginning of last year? If the latter is true, then I'd like to know when teams started finalizing their exact dates for their 2015 OOC opponents, and, at that point, what teams were then available that had open dates that coincided with ours. Certainly scheduling a better opponent would have needed to be a mutual decision by the other school (ahem, BC), but I sincerely hope that we would have made the effort to reach out to any and all possible schools before having to settle on this team. Either way, like OO said, this better not happen again and we better not be putting all our eggs in a Bayou Bucket reprisal.
While the Mexican or Canadian schools are interesting and much more entertaining thoughts, I seriously doubt the NCAA would let us count a win against a school from a foreign country for bowl purposes. Although the cocky thing to do would be to assume we don't need that win in order to qualify for a bowl game and schedule them anyways.
Exactly, 7-5 or 6-5 not counting McGill, UBC, Monterrey Tech, UToronto, University of Mexico, or Simon Fraser still qualifies and will certainly generate more buzz than a 12000 announced crowd for Wagner.

Yup, Wagner's undergrad enrollment is 1,838; stadium seating capacity is 5,000 (no stands on the visiting side); college endowment as I recall around $21 million.
But I'm just glad to have a (home) game, given all the circumstances. Let's get out there and play hard, win, and get ready for Texas......

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education (using data from the National Association of College and University Business Officers and the Commonfund Institute), Wagner's endowment is a bit over $82 million, #507 in the country.
I realize that the Wagner game has not generated a lot of enthusiasm among most of this board. However for one current Rice football family the game has generated considerable excitement! Andrew Reue's (#77) maternal grandfather is a Staten Island native and a graduate of Wagner. His brother (Andrew's great-uncle) was also a Wagner graduate and was a 2000 inductee into the Seahawk sports hall of fame. Phil Qualben was a three sport standout(football, baseball, basketball) and played for the Cleveland Indians 1951-1954 before leaving for the ministry. Several nieces and nephews are also Wagner grads. When Rice played Army this past year at West Point there was a large contingent of the New York family on hand for the Rice victory! We are hoping for a reunion of sorts at Rice stadium in September! Andrew's grandfather is now deceased but his grandmother, who now lives in Austin, attends every Rice home game!
We are, of course, expecting to obliterate the Seahawks!!
I'm with those wwho are just glad we have six home games. I can get over the opponent, I love watching Rice play football. We all really do need to get out there, have fun, and be loud. We've got a lot of reasons to be excited about this program.

Wasn't it Andrew Reue's grandfather that featured prominently in stories about the Owls' trip to the Pearl Harbor memorial (i.e. wasn't he at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked)? I suspect there is no-one on the Rice campus happier with Dr. Joe Karlgaard than the Reue family...

The Wagner grad is Andrew's maternal grandfather. The Navy vet at Pearl Harbor was his paternal grandfather...
