One down (Thank God he's gone) one to go (I would not cry any tears if Gran left either). Hope we can land a great D coordinator or promote Prunty.

Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Hank Hughes has accepted a position with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He has been named co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach on Mike Riley’s staff.

.@NateClouse reporting that former #UConn defensive coordinator Hank Hughes headed to Nebraska as defensive line coach/co-DC..

He is gone now.

Never should have been here.

I should just mentally prepare for another slow start and more excuses.

Prunty was co-DC this year. But I'm not surs if he's ready to call a game yet. I won't lose sleep over Hughes leaving.

Is it possible that Hughes was encouraged by management to "seek his fortune elsewhere"?

That will be the company line. Was last year, too. Guy last year got a guaranteed 2 year contract for $200k more than he made here and he was the highest paid assistant in the whole G5 before he left.

It's the only move they can make unless that was just a title to justify the big raise to keep him on the staff for recruiting. If they bring in another Co-DC, we will have our answer. If they don't, I expect another year of one of our coordinators getting on the job training.

BTW, there went our big Midwest recruiting connection. Lol.

Yep. But maybe he likes what he is doing long term more than being TTs DC for only one year

Maybe they'll promote Joe Tresey out of the broom closet. What's his current position, installing new rolls of TP in coach's restrooms?

We have a good team coming back next year. The offense should be spectacular, the defense only needs to be serviceable. I think we should hire from within if possible. With all the turnover we have in the coordinator position, maybe we should constantly be grooming the next.

RE: Hughes Probably Gone
How on earth did Hughes earn a "promotion" to a P5 school after such a horrible season? Our defense was terrible against every good team we faced.

Is the coaching pool so small (or corrupt) that these losers keep getting high paying positions (usually hired by their buddies)?

I'm glad he's gone (should've been after the first week) and I hope CTT lands a DC who can do his job.

Rath, if Hughes was around for next year, we would've heard you calling for his dismissal nearly every week.

RE: Hughes Probably Gone
After a whole season without a single big defensive stop, my instincts are to say good riddance. Not sure if this is actually good or bad though. I do know the lack of continuity on Tuberville's staff over the years is shocking... I'll just say it. Not a fan of him or the current staff. I understand why Tuberville was chosen. Just haven't liked basically anything this staff has done in 2+ years since taking over.

Recruiting has been pretty ok but not good enough to justify what I've seen on the field. Even that is questionable with the way we seem to load up on skill players & go light on linemen.

I'm assuming it was Riley's long time DC's call given he played and coached with Hughes early in his career.

RE: Hughes Probably Gone
I said it last year, I'll say it again...

WVU has long-time Penn State DC Tom Bradley as a position assistant. I think he's a large part of the reason why WVU's defense was markedly improved this past season.

I would LOVE to see him in Cincinnati.
