PBJ taking the fall
Ok, this is what I think is happening (although I have no inside sources, except my barber thought I might be on to something, so there's that).
Dr. Watts and the medical side want to save money, an influential portion of the BOT wants to put an end to UAB football.
So . . . imagine yourself in a secret BOT meeting somewhere in Tuscaloosa:
PBJ SPEAKING TO BOT AND WATTS: "Put all this on me, UAB folks hate me anyway and they'll focus on me. I'm retiring in a few months. Doing away with UAB football now will look like a last poke in the eye from me to UAB. Do away with the team, the remaining BOT will give the impression (quietly) that I made them do this, the UAB administration can blame this on me (We were fighting as hard as we could behind the scenes to save football.). The BOT can promise a new day of flowers and hearts and will pledge not to treat UAB and UAH as red-headed stepchildren so Williams withdraws his bill (Rodgers never stood a chance anyway). With the end of football, people will settle down, and the BOT can move on with business as usual. The wicked PBJ is gone. It's a new world. Will that work for you guys?" Nods all around.
PBJ gets the blame. He doesn't care. The BOT gets peace. Once football is gone, after several blistering op-ed pieces from the media, the screaming will quieten just like it did in 2011 with the OCS. Watts can blame the BOT. The east side will be happy so Watts gets to keep his job. Mackin may be fired as an offering to placate angry UAB fans who can't touch PBJ. Everyone is happy except UAB fans and Mackin--and it was never about them anyway.

If they do this, it will be an overreach that the BoT will come to regret, sooner rather than later.

I agree.
To be real, I can almost see it. He's already rich and successful. There's no binding authority to make fear any reproach. He is related to football royalty and his father is practically worshiped to this day in this state.
However, if he has been cloak and dagger about his intentions from the get go then I doubt he'd agree to something like that on the eve of what he apparently wanted more than anything else.
That said, any successful effort will backfire.
This is not something that will just blow over because the potential consequences stretch much farther than football. You can tell people that killing plans for an on campus stadium and that denying a hire of a good coach is just about the state of the program and a good number for people will probably believe you. What you can't do is effectively kill an entire program and effectively neuter an entire school and just think you will slip away like nothing happened.

After the OCS Mackin begged us to be quiet that it was starting to hurt the football program. We did as requested because we love the program.

Ditto. The Dragon's Unleashed for better or worse now. His pacifist tactic won't stand up this time.

If it weren't so serious, it would be hilarious. See where that line of thought got the program? All it did was take some heat off Mackin for a few years.
