I feel the same though maybe as one of the posters suggest it's an orchestrated effort to drum up support. Still sounds like a huge gamble...even greater than the AD at Hawaii saying they 'might' have to drop football........but he really didn't mean it.

I recall in one thread a poster commenting about Tulane doing something similar over 10 years ago. That's sure worked out well for them.05-nono

The question I'd have is even if they announced that they'd honor their committments through 2016, who'd want to stick around?

RE: UAB's Future
Western was 1 vote away from closing shop on football back in 1992 but that was back when schools spent a few hundred thousand on football in 1aa. Ten years later we won a National Championship and 8 years after that moved up to FBS

In the next 5 years I see a lot of us needing to add that 2nd money game and pushing boosters to dig a little deeper.

I hope UAB gets things worked out but like others have said...

I see no good reason to wait till the end of the season if it was good news

Unfortunately, that's my thinking as well.

Maybe. Sure seems weird that they (whoever "they" is) would stir the pot during the middle of a season.

Tulane raised tons of money from donations after discussions arose of possibly shutting down their football program. Evidence of this is easy enough to see. If you haven't noticed, they just built a brand new stadium. I'd say it worked out about as well as they could have hoped.

fair enough....I don't think anyone wants to see the blazers lose football....the silence coupled with that announcement date just appears to be odd

What have other universities done, in this situation ? (i.e. have dropped football)

They wouldnt cease immediately. They would play two more seasons before ending it for good. That would give CUSA time to determine if it wants to bring in a new member or not. Oddly, I caught wind that CUSA was looking at possible expansion several months ago but at the time I didnt believe it. With these recent announcements on UAB, I now believe there has been some talks with other schools.

Never liked FSU, but Bama is getting pretty low as well. Hope they both get their hineys booted from the playoffs soon. Hate to see them playing each other for the title.

Living in AL I do not believe this was the case, but could be the BEST unintended result. If UAB can get B'ham fired up, it will pay dividends. Hoping for the best!

I like to think that at the press conference announcing the decision, Oprah is gonna come out of the back handing out new football stadiums to all the universities in attendance. "You get a stadium, you get a stadium, free stadiums for everyone!"

Yes, a brand new cozy 23,500 seat stadium to go with their cozy basketball arena which seats about 3500.

So no, it hasn't worked out as well as they could have hoped. There are a lot of Tulane fans who have been mighty upset for many years with the direction of their program. Fans so upset that this past weekend during their homecoming they paid for a flyover with a banner saying, "Fire Dickson".

Better to have a 23,500 seat stadium and a coach that you want to fire than no stadium nor coach at all.

I think you're trying a little too hard with this one...

No, I'm not trying too hard on this one because I've never made the argument that having a small stadium and a coach is worse than no program at all. Nice try though.

What I am arguing is that if this uproar about Uab is nothing more than a fundraising gimmick, or a way to get an OCS, it's a double-edged sword and can produce some long-lasting damage as a downside. And using Tulane as an example how everything can come up roses is weak at best. To be sure, Tulane's situation today is a complex one though in the end it may not be all that different in a number of ways from what's going on at Uab.

If you're interested to learn more about the frustrations of many Tulane fans, perhaps do a bit of reading on one of their sites about what their administration sees as their boutique program.

Tulane also has their own board. UAB doesn't. If Tulane, LA Tech or ULL was under the LSU board truth is I doubt any of them would have football.

UAB did not do this intentionally. We are getting destroyed in recruiting right now. If it was going to be done, it would have been done at a better time.

And if they announce the program is shutting down, I hope we don't field a team for the next two years. Give Clark his money and force those a-holes to pay the buyouts on our contracts. There is no point in fielding a team of this decision comes down.

UAB's long future ahead in football aside, I can assure you that Clark has got his sights set quite a bit higher than that school.
