Toad's Sun Devil's rang up 622 yards on UCLA, had twice as many first downs and 8:30 more time of possession ... and lost by 35 on national TV Thursday night: 62-37.

Giving up 583 yards, 4 turnovers and 95-and 100-yard TD returns -- on a pick-6 and kickoff, respectively -- will do that.

Looks like bad coaching to me.

Looks like bad coaching to me.

Not to mention two 80-yard TD passes. They go from up 17-6 early in the 2nd quarter to down 48-20 by the middle of the third.

KO following TD to take 17-6 lead, give up 80 yard TD pass, 17-13, 13:00 2nd.
90 yard drive to TD, 17-20, 2:13 2nd.
Drive it down, give up 95 yard pick 6, 17-27, 0:02 2nd.
Kick off to start second half, immediately give up another 80 yard TD pass, 17-34, 14:41 3rd
Drive down and kick FG, 20-34, 9:24 3rd.
Give up 100 yard kickoff return, 20-41, 9:08 3rd.
Turn it over following kickoff on own 23, give up TD, 20-48, 8:27 3rd.

I'd say that any team that gives up that many big plays was clearly poorly prepared. Obviously they have a problem in the secondary. And they have a problem with kickoff coverage. And you would have to question the play call that led to a 95 yard pick 6 with 2 seconds left in the half. The 90-yard drive is the only UCLA score in the sequence that doesn't evidence some kind of severe breakdown.

One thing this illustrates is that the one place you can't be bad is defending the deep pass. Just an example of how quickly it all comes unglued if you can't.

Yup. Epic special teams breakdowns are usually indicative of this

Looks like The Bangles are getting fired as Defensive Coordinator.

Tech did a fair job of hanging with OSU last night. Lost by 10. Their defense looked a bit better. They are #1 in the nation in penalties!
After they had a long kickoff return nullified by (yet another) penalty, the ESPN cameras were glued to the sideline showing Kingsbury going off on the Special Teams players. Apoplectic. Blue in the face. Foaming at the mouth.
Now, everybody has their own coaching style. And I'm not saying that approach is correct every time. But it was an example of raw coaching passion that we don't see very often on our side line.

Yep. Was also exemplified in the Tech-OSU game with OSU just heaving it deep on Tech all day.

03-lmfao

There were only three times (all punts) in the game when a UCLA possession didn't end up in a kickoff or an interview. By contrast, ASU: 2 fumbles, 2 interceptions, 1 punt, and 3 drives on downs.

Wow. UCLA scores and the Toad "interviews" for his next dream job.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

I like to see Todd Hundley do well -- I met several members of his family at the UH-UCLA game a few years ago (the year before UCLA came to Rice), and they were class acts, so I figure he probably is as well.

Of course, it was hard to root against our old coach, but ...

ODU's first three possessions end in INT, fumble, punt. The fumble was a receiver stripped on what would have been a big gain. What a difference even a mediocre pass defense makes.

Toad like DB has always been lauded as a former great DC but neither has had teams that were worth much defensively.

Just getting some pressure on the QB has paid dividends for MTSU and they did a good job after watching our effort against ODU handling the QB punt. They realized that if you could get a player back just when the realization that it was a punt not a pass that punt defense would be less effective. Nice job on being prepared MTSU.
