RE: ODU / Rice game on DirecTV
I respect all the injuries that rice has suffered this year. However our 4-5 best receivers were either kicked off the team or injured for the season, Injuries and replacments in our o-line, and we have 21 freshmen playing this year.

Rice is still one of the only teams in CUSA that everyone still cannot 100% gauge. They played Texas A&M and ND which told us little and lost to ODU without some of their best players. I'm inclined to still think Rice will be very good once they get healthy.

My best guess at this point is that we're a pretty good offensive team and a very weak defensive team. Defense has to improve quickly for this to be a bowl team...that might mean getting healthy, it might not

agree. I'm not a big fan of the "if only...what if" line of thinking, but it's obvious to me that having Covington and a completely healthy QB for the entire game could have made all the difference. Rice is still a force in the league and will in all probability go bowling.

I am glad MT does not play Rice this year. They look pretty good.

I am scared for the ODU - MT game. We need a rebound from the train wreck at Memphis and ODU is going to be riding high...

Rice, you guys failed to get consistent pressure on that dude. I thought you had figured that out in the second half but you kept blowing hot and cold with it.

They were missing 4 starters on defense, one of them being their star DT Covington who's a pro prospect, not to mention without their QB for nearly 2 quarters on offense.

Let's not forget that Rice moved the ball pretty well against 2 Top 10 teams, and that most of our Defense is still made up of FCS recruits. We'll get there.

Let's also not forget that Rice was without their starting QB for nearly two quarters, and without their star receiver for the whole game.

Score with Rice's QB out... ODU - 21, Rice - 7
Score with Rice's QB in... Rice - 35, ODU - 24

Someone is taking our win way too personally.

Speaking of taking it "too personally"; wonder if Taylor Heineke will be motivated to kick our Butts with an exclamation point. Rumor has it (unable to confirm) that your QB really wanted to attend MT after his stellar High School career; but Stock didn't offer him a Schollie!04-chairshot

I believe that is more than just a rumor. We shall see if that affects his performance but It does seem that TH is back on track after a somewhat slow start to the season. I'm looking forward to the Blue Raiders' visit on Fri. evening.

Someone is making assumptions. I teach math and I love stats; find 'em interesting. I watched the game on TV and saw a huge difference in Rice's offense when their QB was out, so I just looked it up after. Didn't take but a minute and there's nothing personal about it. I was only addressing the comment made about Rice's offense.

RE: ODU / Rice game on DirecTV
I wasn't able to watch the game, but what I've read, it certainly seems that it was a hard fought game, with both teams doing themselves proud. The big positive, for the conference, is that it seems that ODU has come to play. Now, that doesn't bode too well for us in the East, as we already had plenty of teams to make this a very interesting season. With Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, ODU, UAB and now ODU, all throwing some muscle around, I'd say that the East is anything but decided at this point. Any one of these teams has the capability to beat the other. That's healthy for the conference...but oh, so scary, for my Herd!! (And, oh guess, what? FIU is also much improved this year, and seems to be developing their defense very quickly. I don't see them being a push-over, at all!)

Top to bottom the entire conference is very, very competitive, west and east.

You being a homer you don't see the truth. While it's true that Heineke is the real deal, it's also true that you dodged a bullet in the end. I noticed that big difference in Rice's offense when the real qb was in. You do have a good team and mainly that's on your qb. No Heineke, no wins. Coaches will press the receivers but it'll leave Heineke open to run. He's very dangerous and UTEP has a bunch of trouble in it's hands when we play you. We've proven that we can't stop the pass. But, I also saw that OD can't stop the run so it will even out.

You're right about the stats but they alone won't tell the story. Our defense was decent at the beginning and they were gassed out from the later part of the third quarter. While i am not taking away any credit from driphus we looked better in the first two quarters. Also to play injury card we were with out half of our OL and dismissals of WR core that were dismised due to on and off field issues. please note i am not taking anything away from Rice they were and are a very good team but all props to my man Heinecke. 04-cheers

Well damn, you guys are doing well then considering. We've been without a couple of our receivers also (suspended for reasons unknown to me, but probably for violations of team rules). We got one of them back against OSU, but that did us no good...lol. The other was our 2nd leading receiver from last season, and he was supposed to be out another one more week, but ended up just quitting the team.

It was nice for us to have a bye this week because last year we're a little banged up ourselves right now after the first 3 games. Had to go 7 weeks last year before our bye.

RE: ODU / Rice game on DirecTV
It's all apples and oranges, but our top receiver (and several others) from last year was kicked off the team, two starting linemen were out, we have only two FBS recruiting classes and were clearly worn out b/c of a lack of depth.

The long and the short of it is that ANYONE who wins at Rice can call it a great victory. ODU is clearly thrilled and most fans were surprised.

Bottom line: ODU went to Rice and got a win. Regardless of the circumstances, we aren't going to give it back. :)

You know, my comment to Volkmar wasn't meant to defend our win because I don't think any of our fans have to. I was just observing his attempt to discredit our victory. I expected Rice fans to make excuses, not a UTSA fan. And now it appears a UTEP fan wants to rain on our big win.

The truth is on the score board. The way I see it, football is played within a 60 minute time frame. Anything that happens inside that hour, counts. There's no dodging bullets. If you can't beat us inside those 60 minutes you lose. There won't be an asterick beside our W. Injuries are part of the game. That's life in football. What did you want ODU to do after Jackson went down? Take Heinecke out of the game until Jackson was well enough to come back? If the roles were reversed and Taylor got knocked out of the game, do you think Rice would throttle down a bit just to make it fair?

Injuries, dismissals and inexperience have had an adverse effect on our team as well.

By the way, thanks for calling me a homer. My fellow ODU fans would beg to differ.

Now, that could be, but I've never heard that before.

Here's a story about his recruitment, and MTSU isn't mentioned, but that's not definitive. Where'd you hear that?

MTSU running back Jordan Parker was Heinicke's high school teammate. That in and of itself would lead me to believe TH had an urging to attend MTSU. It's only natural for high school teammates to want to extend that relationship to the collegiate level.

If the rumor is true, I believe he won't have a personal vendetta against MTSU. No hard feelings. He's already proven his worth and showed that MTSU made a big mistake long before ODU made its way to CUSA. When it's all said and done, TH made the right choice to come to ODU.

Jordan Parker is a junior, so probably had nothing to do with influencing Heinicke.
