Not true in this case. He has to sit out a year because he transferred up so is applying his redshirt for this year and will be eligible next year to play.

Are you sure that is a requirement rather than a choice? Not that I would blame him if it was a choice.

I have yet to for someone to answer conclusively that MB was playing under a full scholarship last year. In addition, was he offered a full ride this year? I believe that he left butt hurt, but if we were not offering a full scholly then I will change my opinion. As I have stated before, when you do the math, there is a good chance that only around 50± have full rides. Additionally stated, we can give 85 players some sort of scholly. We can break down 63 schollys anyway we want not to exceed 85 players. That means there is room for 10 walk on's as we are limited to a total of 95.

Birdsong has to redshirt this year. He couldn't go in even if Rakeem Cato, Gunner Holcombe (Back up) and Cole Garvin (True Freshman) was to go down. Going from IA to IAA, you can play imed. going from IAA to IA requires a redshirt and since Birdsong played as a True Freshman and Soph. he had a redshirt and will not lose eligibility.

As long as Rakeem Cato is healthy he isn't coming out unless we have a blowout in hand.

Cato is chasing Marshall records right now and should be the leader of them all at the end of the season:

Chad Pennington 13,445 passing yards, 115 passing TDs
Byron Leftwich 11,906 passing yards, 89 passing TDs (2 years)
Rakeem Cato 11,129 passing yards, 100 TDs

Cato's numbers this year: 52 for 90, 953 yards and 9 TDs.

That's an avg of 18.3 yards per completion.

If he didn't have his redshirt, he would still have to sit out this year, and would only have one year eligibility left. In MB's case, he was very lucky to still have his redshirt.

Don't forget our $100 bet that Withers will be our coach on Jan 1, 2017. I will enjoy seeing you stroke that check to the Duke Club.

On a 63 scholly team why would your starting QB not be on full scholly, esp when he signed a LOI coming out of HS? (I never heard any mention of Birdsong being a walkon, and he was listed among JMU's 2012 signees).

I certainly don't think that he was a walkon either. But approximately 1/3 of the team is on partials. MM could have very easily had underclassmen on partials, I simply do not know and would love for someone with real inside experience to shed some light on how the Mick doled out schollies.

Of more concern is in finding the answer to my other question. Did EW offer a full scholly to MB knowing that he would not be the starter? That eliminates your starting QB concern not being on a full ride. Let me put it another way, how many FCS 2nd string QB's have full rides? I'm not looking for an opinion, I'm looking for real inside information should anyone have it.
