Marge, how much is Golden's buyout on 2/2015? When will be low enough that the buyout clause becomes practical?

Normally, I would agree about the NCAA cloud, etc. However, those cats don't care about that. There really isn't another university that dominates there backyard like the U. The talent is there. Maybe their national recruiting fell off due to the NCAA mess but they still had a bunch of talent in their backyard. Maybe the Shannon fire didn't sit to well with the local coaches but there is no reason for the U to be down.
Well, Miami doesn't "dominate" south Florida recruiting. They obviously do well at it, but they lose plenty of guys to FSU, Bama, UF and other SEC schools (off hand I don't recall any going to Clemson, which has done well in other parts of FL).
Let's qualify your statement with the U doesn't dominate South Florida recruiting anymore. Broward County and Dade County was all Miami needed. And, they lost very little recruits from that area back in the day. FSU is about the only school that I know of who actually got a top recruit or two from that area. Aside from them, Miami locked that area down and they picked who they wanted. And, that was on top of the national recruits that wanted to play for the U.

No clue. He's under contract through February 1, 2020.
He probably isn't making more than $1.75M/year or so. It's been reported/assumed that Shannon only made ~$900K-1M/year at Miami. They don't release their salary info since it's usually not competitive with national trends.
With that said, isn't it pretty standard to owe the coach the remaining amount of their contract if you fire them? If he was fired after this season, he'd have 5 years left on his contract. Even at just $1.5M/year that's $7.5M that Miami would owe him. Don't think they'd be able to pay that and offer enough to a new coach to ensure the hiring of someone appreciably better than Golden.
I pretty much think Golden's safe for the next 2-3 years regardless, assuming he doesn't go 5-7 and 3-9 back to back.

"Anymore"? What they used to do would be relevant if they were doing it more recently than 20-30 years ago.

Agree so they would probably buy him out at the end 2018 for $3.0 million.

RE: At what point does Al Golden's seat get warm?
Miami needs to start challenging for the Coastal Division....plain and simple
The good Miami teams in the past would blow through the Big East, and their toughest opponent was FSU.
As touted as the FSU-Miami rivalry is, they need to focus on beating Virginia Tech every year....0 ACC Championship appearances is embarrassing IMO. They've got to start competing for that game, and that means beating Pitt, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech EVERY YEAR
If Al Golden can't get them to that game, then they need to find someone who can....David Cutcliffe was able to do it with Duke!! I mean cmon!!!

I think they've got to give him until the end of next year at least, unless they fall to a three win team or something.
The problem though is not that they aren't dominating recruiting like they did in their heyday. The problem is they are STILL dominating the recruiting of schools like Duke, Pitt, GT, VT etc and not separating themselves from that group. That's troubling if you're a Miami fan. You can accept that you're not recruiting at FSU or even Clemson's level, but to not be able to separate yourself from a Georgia Tech is a problem.

Coker's doing pretty well for a brand new football program that's also just transitioned to FBS. But it's pretty obvious why, after his 6 years at UM, he wasn't back for a 7th.

As sad as it is I think Coker would be doing a much better job than Golden.
That said Golden is apparently here for the long term, so I guess we will just have to suck it up.

RE: At what point does Al Golden's seat get warm?
How are those better options than Golden? Seem very similar (Schiano) or maybe worse (Orgeron)?
Anyways, I guess UM fans are definitely turning on Golden. Is the Golden Age that never was, now over?
"Patience with Al Golden is beginning to wear thin among University of Miami fans and ex-players. Like Keira Knightley-thin. Last weekend's demolition of creampuff Florida A&M did little to calm those frustrations, and now a few fans have decided to let their frustration be known. In a very public way.
Late last week, a GoFundme campaign popped up asking fans to donate money that would be used to fly a "Fire Al Golden" banner over Sun Life Stadium prior to a future game, possibly the November 15 contest with Florida State."

I think Schiano did a great job at Rutgers....he turned a perennial loser around and made them a winner.
Al Golden sort of did that at Temple but not really....not like Schiano at Rutgers
All of the NFL-Tampa Bay stuff was a bunch of BS too....Saban and Spurrier didn't exactly fit well in the NFL either

Yeah, Schiano is a name thrown around a lot by Canes fans. You make good points. He might be a good selection... hypothetically. Golden looks like he'll be here...

I don't know if Schiano did any better of a job than Golden given the athletic budgets and conference affiliations. Both did a good job, not sure I'd say either did a great job.

Agreed. (Wow, this is weird, agreeing with you so much)
But maybe Schiano would replace the crap coordinators we've got now. That would probably be an improvement.

Strong would be a perfect fit in Miami but the Checkbook would have to open way up first.
