pretty sure it's called a goal keeper in soccer.

You mean Futball?

Any game that does not allow you to use your God-given hands is just stupid to me.

I would root for any American team, even if they were in worm racing.

But I tried to understand it, studied it, bought books about it, watched it here and in Soldier Field, and even went to English soccer matches. My daughters and son played it. I don't care if 50 billion people play it, and it is the "world's sport." The more I experienced it, the more I hated it. 03-puke Is it time for REAL football yet? I could watch 3-year-olds play football on a vacant lot and be in heaven.

Did I mention: GO REGGIS BALL! GO TIGERS!

I live in the united states and will always call it soccer I guess...
Kinda like when I cook hamburgers on the grill I'm grilling, not barbecuing--much to the dismay of my friend from California.

Either way it might as well be called suckball as far as I'm concerned.

03-lmfao Shortly after my son moved to Oregon, he was invited to a "barbeque." He really missed Memphis Q, so he thought he at least could get some kind of ribs. Much to his chagrin and horror, he arrived to find hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill. 04-jawdrop #loweredexpectations

Memphis Americans

both the Rogues and Americans

Rogues almost won indoor title, losing the rubber match to the Tampa Bay Rowdies

As someone who doesn't watch a lot of soccer, I have this weird "backcourt violation" feeling when they take it across the middle line again. ;-)

I switched to ESPN, thanks to your suggestion, and watched the whole thing...pretty exciting stuff.

So glad we scored. I don't have to know much about soccer to figure out that the Belgium dudes were on the wrong end of the field way too long. Howard was monumental--couldn't sworn there were more than 16 saves.

I think it would be neat if some group could bring him to the city when/if he might already be in the USA. That the back of his jersey simply says Memphis is neat.

Make it indoor soccer with .50 cent beer and it will sellout in every city.

So ...confused I am.

I'm pretty sure I saw the Rogues out of doors one night. Our numbers were few, but we were very high and screaming appropriate things..like yellow card, red card....U U U.....

The Rogues played both in and out I thought. Used a lot of the same players. I only went to the indoor games.

I like how the "players" act like wrestlers when a play or situation doesn't go their way. Comical.

I like how the refs (or whatever they are called) shrug their shoulders and ignore the whiners.

The Rogues started out as an outdoor NASL franchise. The league formed an indoor version of that league, with fewer teams. The Rogues were part of that also. They were very good and drew very well in the Coliseum.

After that success, a couple years later, the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League) had some expansion and franchise movement. Part of that was the Hartford Hellions moving to our fair city to become the Memphis Americans. The Storm was "minor league" compared to those other two.

I like how people inserted American football into this discussion lol...

Like "players" in many sports, such as football. I like the thin skin of mlb players. Every twitch of a hitter is an affront. Although if promoted right baseball can resurge in the wake of all the football controversy. If you're a parent, you will likely lean toward your kid not making the bball team bc that's for the best athletes aside from football skill positions. Won't let football because of concussions and (until recently) deceptive practices toward players have tarnished parental impressions. More and more parents, including former football players are urging their kids into baseball. No salary cap. Not as athletic. Little physical contact. Delete 25% of games and some teams, it could really rebound... Still slower and as whiny a game as soccer though. How many delays and pitcher changes can a game have?

I'm just guessing, maybe Memphis, Egypt is midway point between where his mom and dad are from, or played a role in their relationship. Either way, very cool. Outside Texas cities and Orlando, you don't see many cities as names. I wonder how he feels that he has attracted several hundred fans with minimal media coverage in the states because of his name. Would be randomly cool to build a bond between him and the 901.
Re "football": Which makes less sense, playing a game without your hands or calling a game that doesn't involve feet football? Its all arbitrary. Why give 4 tries and 10 yards? And stop time between plays? And allowing huddling? But no kicking with your god-given feet? Anyone can call any defining characteristic of a game stupid.

Long live the Americans and Showboats! Their memories live on...

I seem to remember another team called the Rogues after the Storm, as support for the sport waned. Maybe around the time all our eggs were placed in the Hoound Dog basket?
