I hear you, but we aren't competing with AU and UGA. We are competing with USM, MTSU, WKU, Memphis, and Cincy. An indoor facility matters.
More than that, as things stand if it rains they have to pack up the gear and the team and bus it all over to Legion Field simply to get a practice in. An IPF will let them get more work in without going through all kinds of waste motion.
Having one also makes a statement about the state of and support for our program. No, we won't have UA or AU or UGA level facilities. No one with a brain expects us to. What we do need is decent facilities that are on a competitive level with our conference mates and other teams that we recruit against.
1. Anyone with the reading comprehension skills of a 5th grader would know I didn't say UAB should/could/would compete with UGA or Auburn.
2. I used them as we call... an example of two different approaches to indoor practice facilities.
3. Birmingham isn't Seattle, the other facilities are necessary year around but an indoor practice facility is only needed the 5 days a year it rains during practice.
4. Recruits pay little attention to indoor practice facilities unless they rise to level of Auburn's.

There are times when the team and coaches prefer to be in a more private environment whether because of the rain, in season or out of season, cold temperatures, or whatever. Also, remember that Spring training has also suffered from issues with rain. Given the choice of practicing in the rain, cold, etc or not the choice is obvious. Also, let's not pigeonhole this as a football-only venture. The women's track team also has had to travel to the CrossPlex to practice. And let's not forget soccer even baseball and softball for basic practices... If the IPF was placed where the track field is and enclose the track as well it would obviously benefit more than just football. Something like...

No sir, Mr. Attalla, I don't know how many times Coach Clark would use an indoor facility. That is why I used the word "necessary" and not use. That is also part of reasoning of using UGA and Auburn as examples. If you have an 120yd X 53yd field in the facility you could/would use it daily as Auburn does. If you have a 50 X 20 as UGA has you would only use for small group work and out of necessity as UGA does.
As for recruits, I am around a big enough sample size to have a good idea of what most are looking for. The local high school is one the top D1 talent producing team in Georgia, last year ranked 2nd with kids on college rosters. The current team also has several recruits. My son is on the team. I am active member of the QBC. One of my nephews signed this past February and another who will sign next year. I have a son that seems to be well on his way. Did I mention that I got recruited by a few schools?
All of that interaction with recruits and their parents leads to a lot of conversations. Conversations yields information. Information help form opinions. Is it not you old wise one that constantly remind us all to "just win"? We need players to win. I would like for UAB to have an indoor practice facility down the road.
Player want to get to the next level and they understand in order to get their you have to have great coaching, great nutrition, great training, quick recovery, and nice a place to relax with your team. The "other facilities" address those concerns. The indoor practice facility would be just as one poster described, just for show. To me that is the equivalent of living in a mobile home and buying a brand new BMW 745, obviously you have money but your priorities are screwed up. Well, unless your priority is appearance and not investment.

Ok now time for an indoor practice facility.
That should be the next step, then a new football building where it will show in the master plan when it is released.
I'll defer to coach Clark on what is needed and what recruits are interested in.

Mentioned above by someone, but for visibility's sake having an IPF might do wonders compared just to changes that could not be visibly seen.

On campus stadium before IPF, it generates revenue, attracts fans, helps increase corporate support, and is nice eye candy. It is always best to defer to those who know what you don't. I believe Clark sees it more my way, according to his public statements, I'm not privy to what he says to you in private. He doesn't sell it as a priority to recruits.

My reading comprehension is fine, buckeroo. You absolutely DID compare us to Auburn and Georgia. Your point is that we need fan support, student attendance, atmosphere, and corporate support. We have little of that stuff currently. Neither do the other teams in our conference, so your example, which includes teams that do, doesn't fit us. You are comparing two different approaches to indoor facilities? Neither fits UAB since both of those facilities are well beyond our means.
You want an on-campus stadium? Wow. Don't we all!? You think an indoor facility doesn't help in recruiting? Of course it does! A recruit that doesn't get offered by Auburn, but does get offered by UAB, USM, and MTSU will compare the facilities of the schools that offered him! He may not be as impressed as he would be at AU or UGA, but he isn't going to those schools!! Having no indoor facility is worse than having an indoor facility of modest proportions. It isn't everything, but it helps! That is not to mention the other factors- convenience of bad weather practices/workouts for multiple sports even during the summer and a sign of growth and support from the university!

I don't know the actual cost of building an IPF but I'd bet it could be done for less than $5m, likely substantially less.
OCS would be $60m +.
Which do you think is most likely to happen first? Not which would we like, but which is most likely to actually be built and used by the UAB football team?
As to what Coach Clark wants, I'm sure that he *wants* the OCS even more than those of us who have been UAB fans for many years do... but everything that I have heard and seen from him points to his having the common sense to see how things are. I see incremental changes, getting the improvements that can be agreed upon done, step by step. If we have a couple of winning seasons and start putting up decent attendance numbers then the chances of an OCS improve.
Walk, then run.

UAB?IAB seems to think that no one here thought about building an on campus stadium before building other things.
UAB?IAB, where were you in 2011? Of course the on campus stadium makes sense first, but the BOT said NO and slammed the door in our faces. We got mad and protested, but the answer has NOT changed. It is still NO. So, we need to do other things for which the answer is not NO, like the indoor facility.

Buckeroo is a term of endearment used when someone gets too big for his britches - like when he says my reading comprehension is like a 5th grader when in fact, I was spot on.

My reading comprehension is fine, buckeroo.
You shouldn't call people names.
Thanks, dad.
Buckeroo is a term of endearment used when someone gets too big for his britches - like when he says my reading comprehension is like a 5th grader when in fact, I was spot on.
However, if I'm wrong, I'll serve my ban.
Someone here was in Buck Owen's backup band ?
