If only half the AAC is able, then things get real interesting.
The Sun Belt presidents have already agreed to the stipends.
If there are programs in the MWC having trouble with the COA, not just the stipend, then there is no way the entire Sun Belt can afford them.
As a whole there isn't a ton of very expensive universities to attend in the Sun Belt. Hell out of state tuition for Louisiana is less than $8500 per year including room and board. Instate tuition is less than $4000 per year and the TOPS program covers tuition fr qualifying students.
ULMost might not be able to cover it, but most will. If they don't they will fall behind.
What does that have to do with anything? Its not just tuition.
Agreed. Cheaper tuition may actually be even worse for schools. Higher tuition could have meant more $ for the school to pay for these new stipends/benefits.

But tuition is a big component. For a public university with out of state tuition at double in-state tuition, could some of the cost increase be mitigated by recruiting more instate? Not every state has enough talent to do that, but schools on the lower end of the scale will have to be creative.

It has a lot to do with it, most of the current Sun Belt programs are not in high cost of living areas. Neither is the SEC for that matter so how will they justify a $5000 per semester COA? or some absurd number that they will use to get the separation that they desire?
The same separation that the AAC desires from the rest of the G5. How will paying a fluctuating COA work? If you ask me, it won't. It will be a flat fee established by the NCAA in order to keep the financial elites from paying these kids 5 figure salaries to play there.
If there is a flat fee that is set and schools can pay no more than said fee, but can pay less than said fee it would be more detrimental for the schools that can't than conference affiliation will.
The full COA will determine who is among the top of FBS, some P5 schools are not that financially stable either.

We all know that it may start off as a real COA number, but as time passes that number will rise quickly, citing all sorts of BS reasoning. It won't always be a real COA figure. Ultimately, tuition and where the university is will have nothing to do with it.

You are kind of off topic. This thread is about the AAC Spring meeting. I am not quite sure how it veered into a Sun Belt and ULL topic. Fwiw, I live in Chicago and even though NIU has had some recent success, there is not one person anywhere that thinks that NIU is ahead of Northwestern or even comparable to it. But that is not the topic being discussed in this thread.

Being that Tulane is a private institution it is very hard to come across accurate budget numbers, but the last number I saw was just shy of $27 million. Of that, just over $8 million was for tuition.
The athletic budget at Louisiana was $18.6 million with $2.2 million for tuition. It will surpass $20 million for the 2014 audit. So while they are ahead of the Cajuns, we have grown our budget by 65% over the past 5 years, compared to one article that i saw where Tulane's grew theirs by 30%.

COA might not be the end all be all anyway. Several lawsuits filed accuse the P5 and NCAA of using collusion to cap the value of scholarships. The P5 reacted with the current autonomy legislation allowing them to offer FCoA. Just last week yet another suit was filed against the P5 and NCAA indicating that the new proposal amounted to continued collusion designed to limit the value of scholarships at a slightly higher value. Essentially, some of these suits are seeking a true free market. Should that concept win the day, college football as we know it is over and the G5 are dead meat.

COA by definition has to vary by school because the cost of attendance is different by school, right? Every school somewhere on its website has a table of the estimated cost of tuition, which includes costs for regular items plus an amount for transportation and "personal".

Generally, only a small percentage of kids pay full retail for a private college. Scholarships and grants help reduce the cost, but it is still significantly more than a public school.

Now you know why we like the eastern exposure as east coast kids typically require less financial aid
