Michigan State AD: Regular football series with Notre Dame likely over
Rosemont, Ill. — Scheduling in college football is getting tougher these days, especially for teams in the Big Ten.

With the new push toward a better strength of schedule as the College Football Playoff is set to begin this year, as well as a move to a nine-game conference schedule and a push to avoid playing FCS teams, the pool for nonconference opponents is shrinking.

At Michigan State, that means some significant changes, including the end of any regular relationship with Notre Dame. There had been an agreement in place to play four years on and two years off, but with the announcement on Tuesday of Michigan State’s series with Arizona State in 2018 and 2019, it was a sign that plan with Notre Dame was over.

“It’s gone,” Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said Wednesday at the Big Ten’s spring meetings. “We have situations where we can’t play them, they have situations where they can’t play us, and it’s just kind of the roadkill of conference expansion that’s created these close rivalries to … we both want to play each other; we just can’t.”

wow nice F you move by notre dame. we knew some of NDs rivalries would go away with the ACC move but i don't think anyone was expecting only the b10 rivalries to be on the chopping block.

Why is this all ND's fault.?

they already so that one was ending as well.

i was off the understanding before today that MSU would be the one b10 rivalry that ND would retain.

translation - neither team wants to give up their precious 7th home game and would rather play 2 cupcakes a year instead of each other.

I am really starting to hate the 7th home game in college football. Its the root of many scheduling issues. If everyone would go to 6 home games, then everyone could play each other.

Well let's see: USC, Stanford, Navy and they could rotate Mich State, Purdue and Texas for their 4 OOC games.03-lmfao

ND made their bed so they will have to lie in it.

They already dumped Michigan, who usually beat them. Since that time they've gradually gotten out of games with Purdue and MSU.

Doesn't really benefit MSU to give them a primo game in Big Ten country, especially since they can get games with power teams from other P5 conferences.

It's alright, the P5 will push for an extra regular season game eventually. There will be more expansion but there are some roadblocks to it and its all rather similar to this situation.

The new governing system will allow for another regular season week. A lot of issues will get resolved in very quick fashion once the governing system is slimmed down.

When Notre Dame is good it always hurt the Big Ten.
I guess the ACC is in that boat now.
You have to wonder if the Big Ten will stop scheduling them altogether. Kinda like Texas and A&M.

I figured a while back (2012) that ND would distance itself further from the Big Ten.

You didn't?

Indy 500 for the natural game could work. I don't know why ND doesn't plan to play 1 big 10 school per year.

I'm not really that upset about Notre Dame doing what's best for Notre Dame. ND doesn't need to play B1G Universities to get exposure or land top midwest recruits. In fact, because the B1G is going to 9, it will probably force all 3 schools to play a more National schedule. All 3 teams played a few MAC teams and ND, quite boring really. Now they can take a page out of the tOSU's playbook and schedule some exciting matchups against other P5 schools. The loss of ND hurts tradition a little, but let's be honest... most of the time you all lost anyway.

Go look at the history and come back to me with the usually lose stuff. MIchigan has been our Achilles hill lately but that series isn't lopsided

While I hate to give Michigan credit for anything but stealing Ohio recruits... I'm just saying, play those 3 yearly, and I like ND to take 2 out of 3.

Michigan ain't what they used to be. Purdue never was. And Sparty has finally turned the corner but without an offense.

Furthermore, why have midwest schools beat up on midwest schools. Sparty may have had a shot at a national title last year. With Michigan and Sparty off of the Dockett, Notre Dame can maybe get closer to winning titles. We need more National Champions up north, but that can't happen if we beat each other up. #TiredOfHearingAboutTheSEC. #AnybodyCanWinButTheSEC

This.

If we had a competent sanctioning body everyone would have to have a balanced schedule. The egregious seven and eight home game BS must end.

RE: Michigan State AD: Regular football series with Notre Dame likely over
Seeing how geographically close Notre Dame is to Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State, I find it amazing that in the future ND will not be playing any of those schools in football. I realize ND's agreement to play five ACC games annually restricts ND's scheduling options somewhat, but still.....
