Cutting the cord in Memphis
I bought an amplified antenna for my TV. Why can I not get NBC (channel 5)? I have no problem getting any of the other local stations. Just channel 5.

RE: Cutting the cord in Memphis
I think I had issues with then when I was over the air. I think the digital transition caused WMCTV to have one of the weakest signals in the market. I used to just have to move my antenna to get the channels I had difficulty with.
Give the station a call or check their website. Maybe they have pointers.

On my HD antenna downstairs I have to move it over 3 feet to get WMC good. Upstairs on my other HD antenna it's channel 3.
Where are you located? Location actually matters.

RE: Cutting the cord in Memphis
I have on HDTV on antenna here in Dallas, there are tons of stations and secondary stations, but I always have to move the antenna to get some channels. Thought about cutting the cord and did so for about four months but couldn't take it.
If I was really going to cut the cord I would buy a nice antenna and put in in the attic.

North Mississippi. My best guess is I am in need of a UHF/VHF capable antenna and not one or the other.
I bought the best indoor antenna at best buy (clear stream) and still no channel 5. Everything else popped right up without even tampering with it. I landed 22 signals, but no channel 5. LOL

With digital, I thought there was no longer UHF and VHF?

RE: Cutting the cord in Memphis
Antenna reception is all about height and obstructions. Some neighborhood covenants prevent antennas on roofs or in public view from the street. Many were placed in attics which can cause reception problems of its own if there is a lot of AC ducts.
I lived downtown (Memphis) in a highrise (17th floor.) I lived in the west side with a river view. With a regular TV mounted antenna I could hardly get channel 3 much less than getting 5 or 13. But I could get KAIT-TV in Arkansas (75 miles away) like it was next door.
And it sometimes requires turning the antenna to fine tune the reception.
This goes for both analog or digital.

The VHF and UHF radio wave bands no longer exist?
Very high frequency VHF 8 30–300 MHz
10 m – 1 m FM, television broadcasts and line-of-sight ground-to-aircraft and aircraft-to-aircraft communications. Land Mobile and Maritime Mobile communications, amateur radio, weather radio
Ultra high frequency UHF 9 300–3000 MHz
1 m – 100 mm Television broadcasts, Microwave oven, Microwave devices/communications, radio astronomy, mobile phones, wireless LAN, Bluetooth, ZigBee, GPS and two-way radios such as Land Mobile, FRS and GMRS radios, amateur radio

When the digital conversion happened I thought all stations were moved to the UHF band, and that's why the low channels like 3 and 5 had weaker signals when they moved.

RE: Cutting the cord in Memphis
I tried a set top here but it did not work so well. I live about 18 miles from downtown Huntsville and Huntsville has some hilly terrain. I went with a rooftop (mounted on the back of the house to accommodate HOA rules) and pull in 18 to 20 channels but some require some antenna adjustments. I am now looking for an affordable remote motor.

RE: Cutting the cord in Memphis
we're considering doing this now. Does anyone have experience setting up a DVR to work with OTA stations and could recommend a good box?
Also, my biggest concern on it is my sports. I know there's watchESPN but I don't have a proper subscription (have uverse internet). I was toying with switching back to comcast internet in order to be able to watch espn. Any thoughts? I left comcast long ago and fear going back, so not sure. Will keep doing research too.
