RE: latest endowment numbers
RE: UAB we're working on getting ours even higher, although I doubt we could touch Rice's numbers.
The current capital campaign launched publicly in October 2013 with a goal of raising $1 billion. Prior to the public launch of the campaign, UAB had already received over $420 million in donations. The campaign is expected to conclude in 2018

RE: latest endowment numbers
remember though not all money raised in a capital campaign goes directly to an endowment and not all capital campaign funds are cash they can be donations of software or equipment or art and some are life trust that do not pay off for years

Rice has some serious jack.
Shame UAB can't spend a few of their bucks on athletics.

$4.8 billion... Wow.
I know Tulane's endowment was north of a billion pre-Katrina, but I honestly haven't heard any recent estimates.

Not sure what happened with this site, but it looks like they got their numbers mixed up somehow.
The University of Southern Mississippi had an endowment of $98 million for fiscal year 2013.

I knew Rice stood on its own academically in the conference, but I had no idea their endowment was anywhere near that high.

RE: latest endowment numbers
Something seems off with these numbers. With my wife being a VCU Ram, I was interested in their numbers. Something is definitely up with going from ~$438,000,000 to ~$1.326 billion. I know they have a footnote about certain longterm investments now being designated as part of the endowment, but good lord!

that is just saying that as of now VCU is no longer going to consider spending into the corpus of those funds, but they have the right to spend any or all of it if they decide to, but as of now they are only going to spend from a portion of the investment returns as if it is like all other endowment funds

Exactly- they're going to operate off of the interest of these funds. In essence, this makes them quasi-endowments because they'll operate in the same manner and, in essence, will be the same thing. That's a lot of dough, though.

RE: latest endowment numbers
Is Rice's endowment about double the total of the rest of the schools?
Rice won't use the endowment for athletic improvements, but they do absorb some of the athletic department's losses from the endowment (I think).
IMO, Rice shouldn't charge money for any of its athletic competitions. They don't need the money. Just generate money from concessions and the good will of having people on campus to see the teams play.

gonna come with a serious ad-hoc spin on this that ties into another issue....if the endowment is used for any athletic purpose and the collegiate union becomes reality....welcome to hell Rice....
my guess would be schools like Rice and USM would just say fk it, and drop the program....
just food for thought

RE: latest endowment numbers
I really don't understand the need for a $4.8B endowment, just like I don't understand why Apple is hoarding $147B in cash. In Apple's case, that money either needs to be used to grown the company through acquisition or distributed to shareholders down to a reasonable level. In the case of a university that money needs to be put to work to either further their mission or to provide a greatly reduced cost of attendance.
Given Rice's history, perhaps a large investment in fully paid minority scholarships.

usually, almost always, endowments can't be touched, only the interest they produce can be used.
