He is a trainer whose methods never really proved effective. I was super excited when he first joined us but I never really saw any evidence that his methods were paying any dividends. I never necessarily felt like he should be fired, but I also never felt like he was better than any other average college trainer.

Since he is nothing more than an 'average' college trainer, he will return to his former client's in the NBA.

Gotta wonder how much of a difference there is between training world-class professional athletes and guys that just left high school. Could his methods be better suited for the former than the latter?

Right, so what evidence is their again that his methods were more effective than the average college trainer?

Like someone pointed out earlier, people who seek him out and pay for his services and seem to reap great benefits, however, that does not necessarily translate into a successful team wide training program where everyone is not quite as motivated...

This. You have to buy in 100% for his method to be effective. It's probably pretty tough to get that through the skull of an 18 year old kid.

I think we clearly saw something good happen with Shaq between this and last season. Outside of that there really isn't anything that shows that he was doing good things for our guys. Maybe not hurting, but not improving either.

Right, I agree with you on this. I wrote this in the other thread a little earlier...

"I think his methods are great for Shaq and Dom and players built like that. However, guys like JJ and Iverson, Will Barton, and so on need a weight room to build some muscle. We consistently look smaller and weaker than opposing teams..."

True but ours guys didn't. Memphis kids are always lean. We got pushed around for years until we got Hogan. You need a quality weight training program in all sports to compete with the big boys . Running on a stair contraption builds endurance and wears out the knees.
I will be so glad when that thing gets moved out.

The middle of the season seems a strange time to fire a trainer if his training techniques and so on are the basis for the firing.

Any problem with the team's conditioning would have surfaced earlier than midseason I woud think.

I don't know what to make of it.

I meant from the standpoint that you're dealing with two different levels of athlete. Yes, many pros will be mentally tougher and more focused, but they would also seem to require different training than an 18 year old who hasn't really developed. Does it make sense to train a Pookie Powell the same way you'd train Blake Griffin?

Maybe they turned a blind eye to any issues and hoped they'd correct themselves.

As with everything else Josh has touched, he didn't utilize Frank right!

Probably had Frank shooting 3s until the guys got stronger...

What I did find utterly insane is the way some here were pumping him up like the second coming - after reading the "frank has been hired" threads, you'd have thought the NCAA tourney shouldn't even be played and that we should just be given the trophy.

Best S&C coach in the country and the main reason former Kansas players of the last few years give as to how they made the League.

Most college age kids need to add muscle mass and lots of it. That is really only going to happen thru a strong weight program. Frank's program was more about conditioning and refinement - making the best use of the body that you have, not building a body. There is a place for his methods, it's just not the best fit for a college program.

RE: Frank Matrisciano has been relieved of duties at Memphis
I dont know anything about the methods Frank uses for training, but I know a little about personal training having run a couple of marathons in my 20s and having competed in a bodybuilding contest at 20 after several years of bodybuilding.

Ive always been an ectomorph in terms of build, and was a very hard gainer. I also knew people who could walk into a gym and just breathe and they were going to gain muscle. I know that with just the knowledge that I have, I could train a freak athlete like Blake Griffin and he would make huge strides. Sometimes, even a bad trainer can help break a plateau simply because their new program creates muscle confusion. The lower the level a trainer goes....from NBA to college...to high school...to the local YMCA, the more they will find a truer sample of the range of body types, and the greater the challenge of truly finding an individual system that will increase fitness and muscle gains

Maybe, the Cincy game helped exposed the fact that our players are not physically strong enoigh to compete night-in & night-out in the AAC. A course correction was needed

Frank was credited for helping Blake Griffin's draft stock go up, so he was in big demand and nobody seriously thought we'd get him. He's also a Pastner clone about the positive attitude stuff, from what I gather, so it seemed like a good fit for a Josh-coached team (positive vibes, another method to get the best players by conditioning them better than others.) He seems like a nice guy, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I wish him well.
