She was great, too! I was just following up on JRsec's comment.

Also, there is still a drive-in movie theater in metro Atlanta. It's in a part of town which the real-estate pros like to call "transitional" but it still draws a good crowd on weekends.

Tina was nice eye candy too, but she came across as much older (partly because she was by 4 years) and too made up an unapproachable. Dawn seemed like the girl next door, well at least to me.

Drive ins were great for dates and for mosquitoes, although one tended to get chapped lips long before we got malaria.

Acutally I think I have been by there. Moreland? Its not transitional unless you mean bullets may transition through your car windows.

Catching up..... Yes JR, I remember the Duck and Cover drills well. 03-lmfao Later, I wondered if any of our teachers realized that if we were anywhere near a nuclear blast, those little desks wouldn't provide much protection!

I don't remember who the first crush was, but I suspect it may have been Ann Margaret from an old Elvis movie. I know my little brother's was Patty Duke, since he would kiss the TV screen when the show would come on. Ha!

I know I'm old. I remember going to see a double header between the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Athletics. Saw Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford and the rest. A couple of years later, we went to see the Beatles at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis, where we lived at the time and where we often would go to Cardinal games to watch Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Curt Flood, Orlando Cepeda, Steve Carlton, Tim McCarver, Roger Maris again, and the rest. I'm old enough to remember watching the Game of the Week broadcast by Dizzy Dean and PeeWee Reese, sponsored by Falstaff and during the NFL season, getting one game a week on TV. I could go on, but suffice it to say, I know that I'm old because I don't recognize that ancient guy looking back at me in the mirror every morning. 03-lmfao

I remember NOT having a TV.

And today I sent a request to my broker for my very first Required Minimum Distribution on my IRA.

Yep, right next to the Star Wars poster (37 years old).

RE: I'm old
When the kids were little we were in Florida for a week and saw there was a drive-in nearby, glad we took them so they could have that experience.

Before Amtrak when passenger rail service was dying they announced the Missouri Pacific Eagle was being discontinued so we rode it from Walnut Ridge, AR, to Newport when I was about 5 or 6. My dad drove and met us at the station :)

I totally understand. Every morning I wonder where I went and why my grandfather is looking back at me in the mirror. If he wasn't such a great guy it would bother me more. Now I just think about the standards he set. I still miss Gowdy, Reese, and the Diz. I haven't really enjoyed any commentators since Howard and Dandy Don hung it up. Madden is the most recent one that was good, but I had given up on Pro football by the time he started his telestrator days.

Every other dorm room had that poster when I was in school.

I actually saw Hard Days Night when it first came out (I had older sisters and my parents made them take me with them to the drive in-for the younger ones who haven't watched "Happy Days" or "That 70s Show" its an outdoor theater where you park your car by a receiver and watch the movie-a giant parking lot with a movie screen).

Still have those up here

I remember fallout drills. We were far enough away from a major city we would probably be fine. We would hide under our desks while Cincinnati would become dust and then head to the fallout shelter. People who didn't live through that can't begin to comprehend the euphoria of seeing the Berlin Wall fall. I think that was a big part of the reason HW Bush lost the election. We won the cold war, kicked Sadaam out of Kuwait with minimal losses but couldn't avoid a recession. Kind of like coaches raising expectations and getting fired.

I missed the fallout drills but I well remember the 1979-1989 era. I had always just assumed -- from the time they shot down that civilian Korean airliner with 300+ people on board and then basically said "Yeah, we just did that. F*ck you if you don't like it." -- that there would be some sort of military conflict with the Soviet Union, sooner or later. The sight of the Berlin Wall getting smashed by Communism's prisoners seemed to me like a gift from God. And a quarter-century later, it still does.

Quote:I think that was a big part of the reason HW Bush lost the election. We won the cold war, kicked Sadaam out of Kuwait with minimal losses but couldn't avoid a recession. Kind of like coaches raising expectations and getting fired.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that Communism crumbled and wished it had done so sooner, but the end of the Cold War was a necessary prerequisite for someone like Bill Clinton to get elected president over someone like Bush/41. That Never would have happened while Brezhnev or Andropov was still waving out from those military parades in Red Square. The end of the Cold War made a lot of people feel like they could take a "holiday from history" (that phrase was actually used a lot in the 1990s) and by replacing Bush/41 with Clinton that is pretty much what we did. For many people, it was only on 09-11-01 that the holiday finally ended.
