RE: Very early predictions for the 2014 SBC Champs
I voted Cajuns. They seem to be in the mix each year. If not them, I'd say Ark State, or maybe Troy if they turn things around. The big question marks are App and Southern, since no one knows how to gauge them. They could run the conference in year one and shock the world or have terrible seasons.

Forget money... Let's do an avatar bet! (easier to collect, people don't get so butthurt over it).
I don't even disagree, but I'll do an avatar bet. (yes, I have a gambling problem)

South fans, how many seniors do you lose this year? And is Ross coming back? Those could factor in. I'm wondering if 2013 was the year all the guys who started the program were in their final year with South.
We had 28 seniors. 15 of the 28 were in our initial class. Ross Metheny was a senior. The senior number ones on our depth chart at the beginning of the year included 4 on offense (qb, center , 2 wr), 10 on defense (s 2, cb 2, de 2, lb 2, dl 2), and one on special teams (punter).
All of them were not number ones at the end of the year.

RE: Very early predictions for the 2014 SBC Champs
I still learning the teams in the Belt and didn't get to see all of them play this year so mine is not the most informed opinion. It does appear that there is a lot of balance in the Belt and I would expect GaSt to be a lot better next year. Based on what I saw this year I'll go with ULL but wouldn't be surprised by anything. I expect both GaSo and App to be competitive but both are likely a year or two away. App's first schedule is a tough one, especially the road games in year one.
I voted ULL with stAte a strong #2.

You lost by two touchdowns. It was only heartburn.
Still like you guys and wished we'd get you for all sports.

I dont know who is losing what next year, but I picked UL again. I picked them to win this year with stAte as 2nd. I don't think stAte does as well this year. Maybe the bobcats make a push or troy regains some of their former glory.
Good luck.
I don't think GSU will be champs, but do better than most expected. IF we can keep our coaches.

Uh..we lose Metheny. We have a good backup but he's not Ross Metheny.
Yea, um, we lose, uh, 27 Seniors off this team. 6 were starters. There's always that year that the first class you recruited to start a program graduates....we'll this will be our year.

18 starters return off of a 9-4 Sun Belt and 3 time New Orleans Bowl Championship team. WKU is gone, stAte has yet another coach, ULM lost Browning and South Al loses Matheny and has to come to Lafayette. Trot will not beat us.

I actually think that, losses notwithstanding, were gonna be good next year. We return 18 starters too. Many of our losses were the players we used to 'fill out our team' while we were transitioning. I'm not so scared of anyone in the Belt, nor taking them lightly either. I think we're going to be able to compete well next year.

If Bridge keeps the "what the hell are you doing" plays to a minimum, we'll be fine.
The pass rush won't be nearly as strong, so the defense might struggle some, but we might be able to outscore folks.

We did get some really nice Juco all Americans for next year. I think we'll be fine with the defense. Our team should have better overall depth. The real question for me is how Bridge handles playcalling.

RE: Very early predictions for the 2014 SBC Champs
I voted for the Cajuns because we have so many starters returning, and I expect our staff will be there as well. Our biggest concern is finding a new center. We will have more depth and talent than at any time in our history and that's not including what is expected to be another top recruiting class.
However, this is a quarterback game these days...and if you don't have a good one, you will be hard pressed to win any conference. ULM, USA and Troy lost total studs at the QB position. That's hard to replace. Those three played the best in the conference, even with Browning being hurt much of the season. Our QB did not have the kind of season we expected. He got off to a rough start playing at Arkansas and KState and never got on form for most of the season. He had several good games, but we didn't see the progress we hoped for. I believe he will come back next year with a big chip on his shoulder and expect big things from him.
We will have excellent competition at the back-up QB position this spring with Jalen Nixon showing a lot of poise and playmaking ability against USA and Tulane. He's a bruiser at 6'2 220 lbs and pairing him with Harris and McGuire will cause problems. I'm hearing our staff are discussing adding packages for him next year similar to what Auburn is running.
Not sure how G.South or App.State will handle things in this conference. I'm sure they will be competitive and don't doubt there will be wins against some of the better teams in the Belt. USA has impressed and should be good again, but are losing quite a few players and a really good QB. Is Bridge the answer next year? Troy has a 6'7" QB, but don't know a thing about him. I'm sure he can probably throw it, but does he have any mobility? TxState has a talented young QB as well and expect him to be tough to defend next year. I wasn't overly impressed with Brown at ULM, but QB's can make dramatic improvement with the right coaching and support from teammates. GaState seemed to be in just about every game for the majority of the game, but couldn't finish. I'm sure they will compete better next year after getting a feel for things this year.
Back to my original point, the team with the best QB in the league will have the best chance to win the title. I like our chances with Terrance Broadway under center.

Of course I voted for App, but I have no idea what to expect in our first season in the SBC. Frankly, I would not be suprised with any record between 11-1 and 1-11. I expect App to lose to Michigan and beat Campbell. After that who knows? I'm expecting 6-6 or 5-7.

Hope springs eternal.....just ask Cubs fans.....so I will go with Troy but who really knows......All I know is that AGAIN the Sunbelt will out perform and out produce and out attend the Cusa dudes.....and they will still think they are superior......yes more bowl slots for now but that along with Tellyvision will change so.....let their over inflated egos continue....lets just play ball.
