Jim Delaney's tv strategy in New York
The best thatI can figure is that Jim Delaney in picking Rutgers wants to get the Big Ten network on basic cable in New Jersey, New York City and southast Connecticut.
If the Big Ten can do that it it would get more than 7,000,000 homes in NewYork City alone. At $1 per subscriber that's $7 million a month or $84 million a year.
However, will New York wnt to pay that much? Over on the UConn board they are mocking Rutgers basketball attendance. At Rutgers last basketball game, only 300 fans showed up. How is Jim Delaney going to convince cable tv companies to pay for a Rutgers product?
Even on the Syracuse board their fans are harping on the number of Syracuse fans compared to Rutgers fans especially at places like the garden.
Does anybody have any insit into what the negotiations might look like? Can the Big Ten sell Rutgers to the cable companies? Can the Big Ten expext to get $1 per subscriber? Do you think they will have to take less?

They can't, but I think BTN and YES are both Fox Properties so they will package Rutgers with the Yankees/Nets. Unclear if it will work (since Yankees ratings were way down this year), but that is the strategy.
I hope BTN was paying close attention to the CBS/Time Warner showdown - NYC is not going to have something forced down their throats (and that was with the NFL season looming that Time Warner blocked out CBS).

RE: Jim Delaney's tv strategy in New York
Rutgers is going to get very good at basketball before anybody east of the Hudson is going to give a crap about the Big Ten Network. A more plausible goal is to get on basic cable in New Jersey, where there are probably 3 million TVHH including some in the Philly market.

RE: Jim Delaney's tv strategy in New York
BE4evah... thanks for doing ZERO research and having no idea what you're talking about.
The attendance for that game was because it was literally scheduled the day before. It was a consolation game for not making it into the NIT level tourney. No one knew about it. Plus, it was against a nobody opponent (Stillman). The attendance for the other games has been perfectly fine. ...and this is in a year after a major scandal.
FACT: Rutgers statistically has the most amount of fans in New York City of any college team by a long shot. New York Times
# of fans in NYC (2011)
Rutgers: 607,157
Notre Dame: 266,935
Penn St. 186,410
UConn: 150,150
Michigan: 144,231
Syracuse: 133,900
FACT: RU stadium capacity is 52,454. 2012 home attendance average: 49,188.
FACT: Rutgers has been a part of four of the five highest-rated ESPN football games in the New York City market. http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index....ing_i.html
Rutgers is certainly a cable power, and easily the only school that would have any kind of power in the incredible NYC/NJ markets.
...and the moment you have RU vs. OSU, RU vs. UM, RU vs. PennSt, the demand will hit new peaks.

These articles are 2 years old and Rutgers was better. How would fans feel if they go 4-8 every year in the B1G.................

Uh dude... yeah. 2 years ago. Imagine the numbers today AFTER the B1G announcement and legitimacy. There's been hordes of articles about everything going up at NJ.com if you want to peruse for yourself.

...not to mention in 2010, we went 4-8.
Winning is obviously required with any expansion addition to maximize their contribution, but the B1G couldn't have added any other piece that would have given them a better chance of securing NYC/NJ.

RE: Jim Delaney's tv strategy in New York
I live in Illinois and I have a hard enough time understanding why the big ten network is on basic cable. I guess there are enough fans willing to boycott Comcast if they don't get BTN and go to dish or some other alternative.
But who cares how I feel? The question is are there enough fans in New York that would demand the BTN be put on basic cable just becasue Rutgers is now in the Big ten? I just don't see it.

Just so we are clear, Rutgers NYC fans are more the result of 1/3 of the NYC DMA being northern Jersey, than true Rutgers fans in the remaining 2/3rds of the DMA.
And this article has been debunked and mocked several times over since it was first published since it's based upon flawed data - particularly the CommonCensus Sports Map Project.
All one has to do is scroll down to the national fanbase of individual teams. They make sense for the most part within their perspective conferences, but does anyone truly believe that Rutgers, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse has more overall national fans than Oregon?
Also, even within conferences, does anyone truly believe FSU has less national fans than 7 other ACC teams? Really? Does anyone seriously believe that Louisville has the least amount of national fans for what was the BE at that time?
None of this is to denigrate Rutgers, who is strategically located between two big DMAs in NYC and Philly and will supply the BiG with a good recruiting area for both football and basketball, especially when combined with Maryland. So the synergy of added them along with the BiG developing a true Eastern division will help in terms of the BTN.
But let's not over-exaggerate the strength of its fanbase as this article tries to do.
Cheers,
Neil

Those are discredited bull **** numbers generated from an online poll sent to colleges and universities about 5 years ago. There is nothing scientific about the results as you could vote as often as you wanted if your school knew about the poll. If you believe the results you believe there are more Auburn fans in Alabama than Alabama fans and more East Carolina fans in eastern NC than UNC fans.
It's complete bull **** and on top of that the author further exacerbated the results by trying to correct them using retail merchandise sales.
Anyone quoting these numbers should be banned for a week.

The only college sports that moves the needle in NYC is UConn & Syracuse basketball ... and both teams must be ranked.
Otherwise, it's: Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets, Rangers, Knicks ........

Speaking of retail sales:
Cuse>>>Rutgers
Cuse also gets higher ratings nationally than Rutgers.
Speaking of Rutgers BB what is fine for attendance? 1500 actual 3500 announced?

Spin this...tonight versus a local NJ college you only had 466 fans? I bet at least 100 of them came from Farleigh Dickinson. BTW, how do you lose to the #349 rated team?
Either your fans suck or your marketing sucks

I'd like to know how that was asked... to determine "fans" and teams... I know bars in my neighborhood in Manhattan that are known for Irish fans going to watch, others for Penn State, Michigan, and 'Cuse... and UConn basketball - don't know of football watching groups for them.... I can't honestly say I know of a place that has RU watch parties... *shrug*

There are a TON of B1G alumni living in NYC. More than the ACC, SEC, Pac etc. The Big East might have more just because they have so many schools close to NYC and also draw from the mid-west like the B1G. They will be on basic cable without a doubt in NYC.
The bashing of Rutgers by the ACC fans is laughable. Such a bunch of haters.

Stage to do what? What kind of time frame are you referencing here? Look, I like Rutgehs well enough and all, but they likely won't even make a bowl game. NCAA tourney? Uh, probably not. What else? Lacrosse? I mean, I don't even know what they are even performing at an even moderately high level at right now.
So, they'll be joining all the pro sports in the area in the remainder bin. Rutgers, exit stage left...

RE: Jim Delaney's tv strategy in New York
New Jersey has 8+ million people. It's a big market all by itself. By contrast, Connecticut has 3.6 million people.
But Rutgers' appeal does not extend into New York and Connecticut. Anyone who thinks the people in Brooklyn, NY or Bridgeport, CT will be watching Rutgers FB and buying Rutgers merchandise is crazy.
