CUSA/Liberty Bowl plus Armed Forces Bowl last yr starting to pay dividends; imagine what an upgraded stadium EZF would contribute to the efforts.

RE: 2015 Football Recruiting
I'm thinking we might have a good chance to keep him.

We've actually done a good job developing D-lineman under Bailiff (i.e. Solomon, Cheta, and Covington), so we have shown that DTs and DEs can use Rice to get into the NFL. Plus, as others have pointed out, this kid seems to value an education, so there are few schools that can really compete with us academically. And then there is the fact that he would be able to start, and contribute, immediately.

@JeffersonPowell: 6'4" 235lb North Forney QB Hunter Herndon (@hunterherndon10) has committed to the Rice Owls as an Athlete. Offered today and Committed.

I wonder if there is a relation to the former MBB player Emerson Herndon?

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1760758/hunter-herndon I'd be lying if I told you I was extremely impressed by his tape... Maybe they're making a bet on his size?

RE: 2015 Football Recruiting
This is a guy I think Rice should take a look at... http://247sports.com/Player/DeUnte-Chatman-29798 ... Someone in his family has been peddling him on ShaggyBevo and TexAgs (Like that's going to help!!!), but he does look like a legitimate prospect. His SPARQ score is very good. Also, according to previously mentioned family member, he has good grades and a decent SAT.

I doubt it. Hunter is white, Emerson is black.

"As an athlete" means he won't necessarily play QB. I'd guess TE or maybe DE. With that in mind, I was impressed -- he looks like a man among boys, even as a junior, and he moves very well for his size.

But I have learned that it's hard to predict who will make the HS-to-FBS transition.

RE: 2015 Football Recruiting
Tyner and Herndon are big athletic bodies, and probably still have some growth left. Might take a little longer to transition/develop them on the defensive line but their combinations of size and athleticism are rare.

Bailiff remarked following the Liberty Bowl that we needed to get bigger on the lines in order to get to the next level. Looking at who we have offered (and received pledges from) so far and it certainly aligns. We have 3 offers out to big OLs out so far too (among 10 or so early offers extended).

Bailiff just might be taking a more unconventional route to getting us some bigger athletes on the DL.

Interview with Herndon up on the Rivals site. Sounds like he has TE in mind. Also seems very enthusiastic about his commit.

Just looked Donelly up on ESPN, they have him as a four-star AND a member of the ESPN 300 (#229)! Has Rice ever had a recruit in the ESPN 300? (Obviously it hasn't existed that long, but still an auspicious sign!)

Recruiting big OLs as a way to get bigger in the DL would definitely be unconventional. DLs are typically faster and more athletic, OLs are typically bigger and slower. Finding an OL who is quick enough to play DL is rare. The more common transition is what Fred did a lot, recruit a DL and move him to offense if he's too slow. The transition to DL is usually a LB who grew.

Who are those offers to?

Well, looks like I could have hit Google and figured that out.

I wouldn't be surprised if the success of guys like James Casey, Vance McDonald and Luke Willson are helping us get some of these kids (David Sloan as the tight ends coach doesn't hurt either).

Looks like we had a big day yesterday. It also looks like Rivals is stepping up. Putting out quite a bit of content lately. I cancelled my membership with them last spring when MoonDog's coverage started slipping to only a few things a month and a fellow Owl pointed me over here. Been a reader here going on one year now. How is the new guy over there at Rivals? Another friend told me he's been out front on quite a few things but, I am cheap. Is it worth the $10 a month?

Some months, no. Other months, worth 5X that. Overall, I am satisfied with the return on my investment.

New guy is trying hard.

Starting off big, in several senses of the word. Herndon looks like a future TE or DE. Tyner has a lot of potential at several positions. Donnelly would be a crown jewel in any class. I'm happy so far.

Coverage was lacking during the football season (and the Rivals site is definitely football weighted, always has been) with just the same news and articles that could be had at the official site or chron.com. Needs more insider info on current football team in that regard.

It is the only all-in-one source for up-to-date Rice recruiting info. You can keep track of all the offers that are known to have been extended and read articles on targets/commits, etc. That's my main reason for staying subscribed. I don't want the only recruiting portal Rice has going away, which could happen. Also with a subscription you can access other parts of the Rivals network which I find useful as I like to follow CFB recruiting more generally as well.

IMO, new guy could do a better job at maintaining the database and prospect profiles. Maybe now that he has a couple interns there's more man-power to be able to do that, but I haven't seen it yet.

Also this spring is a prime opportunity for him to stake a claim as there is ostensibly no other coverage of spring practice outside of him and the official site.
