Neat article from espn. Say what you want about the changes, but there will be a ton of new helmets this year

RE: New helmet designs
One reason besides living in PA that I like PSU (hold the pedophile jokes please). Traditional old school uniform (although they did add names to the back) to go along with real grass with real mud.

Same to a lesser extent, as far as unis go, with Bama, Texas, Notre Dame (only thing I like about Notre Lame), Navy, and Army, GSO, etc. Basic, old school design. Haven't given in to this new age 50 different uniform combo fads (yeah, Army-Navy did last Dec)....

Its shouldn't be a *** **** fashion show. Its a football game...

It's all about exposure. There's no media coverage highlights of PSU as they wear the same uniforms every year. Oregon has gotten a boatload of TV/media coverage from just changing their unis. I'm sure that can be a conscious and subconscious recruiting tool.

Personally, I like a lot of the new designs. Not all of them, but some. Like or dislike, we're talking about it, and that's the true motive.

Ugh. I can't stand the trend which Oregon started of a new uni every damned game -- and now not even the helmets are sacred. 03-banghead

i'm with you. it was ok when Oregon did it. It was kind of their "thing".

but now that everyone is, it's become a joke.

I've always said what Oregon should now do is go out there in the plainest uniforms possible. Even more so than Penn State.

just white. no colored stripes, names, logos....nothing. just all white everywhere with basic block numbers.

The USA helmet may have looked good in person....but it didn't translate well over Madizone broadcast.

I'm sorry if I'm in the minority, but I didn't like the USA helmets. I liked the effort to try something different with our uniforms though.

I don't like our matte finished helmets. I think they suck. Bring back the gloss finish.

I'm definitely in the old school camp and am tired of this trend. I look at uniforms like Maryland's and just laugh. They look ridiculous. I agree that it was kind of cool when it was just Oregon doing it but now that everyone is doing it it's just dumb. I saw that Indiana has 8 helmets this year. How about win 8 games? Freaking Indiana.

Starting to look like carnival clowns in some of these. The McMaryland ones were the worst.

If JMU had the metallic gold (same as the chrome finish) then that would be badass!

RE: New helmet designs
I pretty much don't like any of them. I really liked the Cincinnati ones when I saw a picture of them but then when they wore them for the game, they didn't look good. Unless you were on the field, you couldn't really make out any of the markings or anything. I could be wrong, but although Oregon is known for starting the "different uniform every game" trend, I think Mississippi State was the first school to wear multiple helmets. They had a maroon one and a white one. It just shows you how much revenue these FBS schools pull in from football. Football helmets are not cheap. To wear a different one every game of the year is pretty crazy. I hope this doesn't spill over to the NFL.

RE: New helmet designs
A lot of people keep saying it's a recruiting tool but other than Oregon (who was using tactics way outside of wacky uniforms), are there any schools who have really improved their programs by going to this? I was looking at the top 25 from last year and some of those teams will do a once a year gimmick but I don't see anyone's program making leaps in the win column.

If you look at the 30 for 30 promotional image on the JMU dukes fb page right now, it shows photos of the old "dukes" helmets worn way back when.
I'd love to see those brought back as occasional alternate helmets, a nice throwback style.

RE: New helmet designs
My nephew plays for University of St. Francis (the one in Illinois, not the one in Pennsylvania) and they just posted a picture of their new helmet. Instead of the all gold helmet from past years, it is now brown with a gold stencil of their mascot (a St. Bernard dog). Interesting concept but I don't think you will be able to see the stencil unless you are right on top of it. As long as it keeps his head safe I don't care what it looks like :-).

Yeah, that's why you rarely see a mascot logo on the side of a football helmet. Looks fine up close, but if you're in the stands or watching on TV they're usually tough to make out unless they're really simple.

+1 haha

But yeah, I'm kind of halfway in between on the "old school vs. 20 different uniforms" thing. There are teams, both college and NFL, that their uniforms are already great and there's no point messing with them, but then there are teams that it wouldn't be bad to try something new. I do hate all the crazy uniforms and helmets though, it's ok to do something different now and then but a lot of teams go too crazy with it. I loved when JMU wore the black, I liked Florida's Nike Pro Combat, but neither of them went overboard with it. For JMU though, I'd love to see a helmet with the Duke Dog head on it. Just as long as it's not some ridiculous over the top BS like Oregon and everyone else now pulls.
