I think that jersey has potential, just not a big fan of the crowns on the sleeves. I like how Nike is stepping up the designs with the pro combat lines, however I do think the different jersey every game is ridiculous, and all Maryland jerseys are trash. I'm still a simple man, just a little design on the shoulders (see Oregon duck wings) or within the name/number (see VT vs. Boise) is pretty sharp.

JMU's helmet logo is classic, and needs no "update"

I agree that the JMU helmet needs no update. Mickey once said something that I find myself in complete agreement. I'm paraphrasing but the Mickster said that traditional powerhouses do not continully change their helmets. Look at Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, my beloved Sooners, that school in Austin, etc.

Nail, meet head.

Quote:“But we garner attention when kids turn on the TV, we’re recognizable immediately,” Stoops said. “As soon as you turn it on. We garner attention through being such a brand, to a degree.”

There was a thread on here about JMU's national recognition. You put a Duke Dog logo on the side of the helmet an nobody will know who is playing and immediately flip the channel. You want to impair moving toward national recognition, that would be a good way to do it. I turn on games these days and if they didn't have the digital on screen guide now, I wouldn't have a clue who was playing.

Forget all the logo's and whatever else those helmets themselves look badass. I wonder what helmet that is or if it's a prototype of some sort?

The jersey in the pictures is okay, I'm thinking the crowns on the sleeves are on an under shirt, correct? If not, then, uuuuh, no.

How's this for an idea: Why don't we look like men rather than damned beauty queens? Keep the same helmet. Forever.

Ok, we've had different helmets in the past. Madison college helmet, Dukes script helmet, JMU helmet. The arrow of time forces change, Like an fbs move, stadium expansion, etc. Sometimes even uniforms must change in order to help grow a fan base, especially one intent (hopefully) on moving up. I'm not saying the one in the picture is the answer, but I understand being open to change (in many aspects) is important if you want the school to continue to grow.

No, I do not see any connection between changing the uniforms and growing the fan base. The same unis since the dawn of time seem to have worked fine for Alabama and Penn State.

If you are under the impression alabama or penn state has not altered things in their history, you are just wrong. They have changed things, for instance in 80's they had alternate white helmets on the road. Here is a link to the changes in uniforms for alabama over time. Some subtle, yes, but changes nonetheless. I'm not saying JMU has to be oregon with our uniforms. But EVERYONE alters their look at some point....even alabama....

I think this helmet would look cool exactly as is, but no logo. The logo adds nothing. Simple with only our colors. With the logo it looks like something a division II school would do.

Agreed. What do you think of the purple helmet, with JMU on the side in gold...as an alternate?

As long as its kept simple, it would be okay. The dog is just too busy, no matter if its big or small, too detailed for a helmet.

RE: New helmet designs
Texas and Arkansas work because the logo is a silhouette, Duke Dog is way too complicated for a helmet. I wish we would come up with a type treatment for "JMU" that didn't look like so many other "_ _ U" schools. I've always thought the JMU on the helmets look DII-ish. I like the idea of the purple helmet just for the fact that it would be unique among FBS schools.

But the reality is that being a powerhouse is what makes certain schools recognizable. The Sooners and Huskers have two of the cheapest looking logos around, but they have trophies and tons of tv coverage so it doesn't matter.

LOL... C'mon guys, we can't have Duke Dog head on a "purple helmet."

Really.

ECU & TCU, but yeah, pretty rare.

RE: New helmet designs
If you had the gold jersey, purple pants, then a purple helmet might be pretty cool. Not really fond of the purple helmet with all the purple in the above picture. Too "Oregon" for me.

Update: Imagine this uniform with a purple helmet. The contrast might work better than having the gold helmet with this combination.

Throw Northwestern in there for good measure.

Gold helmets >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Purple helmets. Especially at night. Go back and look at the University of Washington. They had gold helmets, switched to purple, realized they looked like ****, and wisely switched back.
