And the P1G talking about wanting to move their championship game to Ford Field. Maybe the Lions are going to dump the MAC for the P1G. If so, move the championship game and a bowl to Indy.

RE: Little Caesars Bowl going away?
I'll repeat the idea over here from another thread but the MAC could start a set of bowls against the final pick of AQ conferences in its backyard if it wanted to.
1) Mobile (MAC #1 vs. SBC #1)
2) Hawaii (MAC #2 vs. MWC)
3) Indianapolis (MAC vs. B1G #10)
4) St. Louis (MAC vs. SEC #10)
The power conferences wouldn' be able to fill their obligations in most years but that is OK since the MAC could invite schools like Memphis and Marshall as fill ins.
At least if you win your division you'll be gauranteed a warm destination.

That's exactly what I'm not understanding here.
They believe a 6-6 Wake Forest or NC State will match or exceed the number of fans a Toledo/WMU/CMU would bring?
My hunch is that the Detroit Lions Bowl ( ) will try to get the MAC as a backup agreement if one of the BC$ conferences don't have enough teams. I'm tempted to snub them and let them dig up a Florida International or UTSA if they get desperate.

The list is only one page back. The four that have drawn over 50K fans are:
60K, Purdue v CMU 2007
54K, MTSU v CMU 2006
52K, UConn v Toledo 2004
51K, NW v Bowling Green 2003

Why would they sanction another bowl in Detroit? And a year or 2 ago the NCAA said they were not approving anymore new bowls that woudl raise the # of bowls above 35.
There was a bowl moritorium in effect until 2014. Orlando and LA didn't make the cut back in 2010 at the beginning of the last cycle.
Since their will be 9 new schools in FBS for the next cycle and a loss of 1 bowl game (double hosted bowl) the NCAA could licence as many as 5 new bowl games.
Los Angeles (PAC vs. MWC)
Little Rock (SBC vs. CUSA)
Could the MAC add 2 bowl games against lower tier P5?
St. Louis (SEC vs. MAC)
Indianapolis (B1G vs. MAC)
I don't think the SEC or B1G want to play CUSA/SBC in a bowl game if they can avoid it but maybe the MAC because of its relationship with ESPN makes it an enticing partner.

No backup for the MAC in Detroit.
A backup is only required for certification purposes and the B1G can certify 11 bowls counting 6-6 records while the ACC can certify 10.
I expect this game in Detroit will be B1G #8 vs. ACC #8. No secondary agreement required.

Fair enough ... my point was that the Motor City Bowl risks becoming this. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Cool. Thanks for the history lesson.
There's precedent, a bowl that could potentially match up Maryland vs Syracuse should be avoided.
I thought of that. But that game drew 50K fans. What's the best the M/LCB has drawn?

Oh, Bleacher Report.
Quote:Even with the reputation of a game that comes down to the wire, attendance dipped drastically last season, according to USA Today.
Never mind the 6 inches of snow on top of a layer of ice on game day.
Quote:A possible meeting between Michigan and Florida State does sound a lot more appealing than being forced to watch Florida International and Toledo.
A chance to host the Wolverines at Ford Field would also fill the seats and bring in big numbers for everybody involved. The only thing these bowl sites can hope for is a packed house.
In what parallel universe does either of these teams play their bowl game in Detroit? Sorry to burst your lofty bubble, but it's the Wake Forests and Dukes playing the Indianas and Minnesotas of the world.
Quote:The loser in all of this would be the fans of the MAC, who didn't have to travel across the country to see their favorite teams play. The winner is Ford Field, which will see a spike in interest due to a more competitive and sexier bowl matchup.

MAC fans would have more room to complain if there was consistently 70K in the stadium.

Hua?
How are 9 of the last 12 M/LCB over 40k not much better than <20k for the Cherry Bowl of Maryland vs Syracuse?
Ford Field only holds 65k so 70k is impossible.

Good point, I hadn't realized there were that many that showed up for the Cherry. But then again, that was the 1980s when the bowls were much fewer and farther between and had greater individual attention.
If attendance is key, I'm still very hesitant to believe Minnesota vs. 6-6 ACC will pull in the same crowd as Minnesota vs. 9-3 UT/BGSU/WMU/CMU would. But they'll have the "sexier" name and can push this to advertisers, I suppose.

The attendance wasn't 20K. The attendance fell by 20K from the previous year. Per wikipedia...
The Cherry Bowl was apparently off to a good start with its 1984 game, drawing more than 70,000 to its Army-Michigan State matchup ... without the local Michigan State team attendance for the 1985 game (between Maryland and Syracuse) fell by nearly 20,000.

Ditch Detroit altogether and let's get a new host bowl going in Indianapolis. It would be perfect for us.

I agree with you. And while I bear no ill-will toward Wake, etc, I don't see how they are sexier. Same w/ Duke. Same w/ any ACC team that's bad enough to get exiled to Detroit for their bowl game. And honstly, MACtion gets more attention than Jefferson Pilot's amateur production broadcasts of the ACC.

We could set-up camp in Indy, but I really think attendance would drop for both the MACC and LCPB. The 3 Michigan schools and BG/Toledo made the LCPB and MACC. All the fans of those schools have relatives from Detroit and were around there during the holidays making it convienent to attend. Indy wont work the same.
Again, why cant both bowl be at Ford Field as long as they are on different weekends?? Unlike conference championships, bowl season is 4 weeks long. Why move it to Comerica or Indy when we could just move the date? Is Ford and the Lions flat-out kicking us out and refusing to do business with us?

Steinbrecher seemed confident the other day that our bowl situation would improve as he was saying he wanted to make sure a bowl eligible MAC team was never left behind again like 2010 Temple. What bowls are left we can tie-in with? I'll wait to see what Steinbrecher has up his sleeve.
