RE: Little Caesars Bowl going away?
So we'll have a Bowl Game in Detroit that will match-up mid-tier B1G and ACC teams. Which means Maryland vs Syracuse would theoretically be a match-up.

I wonder if the people behind this idea have studied whether Maryland/Syracuse Bowl games in Detroit have been historical successes?

Keep it regional. The Motor City Bowl works as a regional Bowl that can draw a top-performing MAC team --- it won't work as a bowl game matching mid-tier B1G and ACC teams.

Except that Maryland will probably get placed in the Pinstripe and it would be a Purdue vs Syracuse game. That would still probably not outdraw a Central Michigan vs Purdue game, but your point is still valid. The bowl should stay regional.

Detroit in December is not a Destination.

Fair enough ... my point was that the Motor City Bowl risks becoming this. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Cool. Thanks for the history lesson.

There's precedent, a bowl that could potentially match up Maryland vs Syracuse should be avoided.

They are going after the Kraft Bowl also.

The B1G is not pursing Kraft anymore since they've added the Holiday Bowl. That gives the B1G 9 bowl tie-ins; trading the Meineke for Pinstripe and adding the Holiday.

The B1G can sign as many as 11 bowls without a secondary agreement therefore it could do the MAC a favor and support a new bowl in Indianapolis.

A run down of what the P5 leagues are planning for their lower tier bowl games:

Liberty (B12 #6 vs. AAC)
Independence (ACC #7 vs. SEC #8)
Birmingham (SEC #9 vs. AAC)
Detroit (B1G #8 vs. ACC #8)
Military (ACC #9 vs. AAC)
Dallas (B1G #9 vs. CUSA)

I expect the game in Detroit to be a solid pick from both the B1G and ACC, filled in almost all years.

The MAC still has a chance to open a bowl game with the 10th pick from the B1G/SEC/ACC as a replacement. When the B1G/SEC/ACC are absent from their side of the tie-in the MAC #1 could invite the CUSA or SBC champ to play in it.

Personally, I'm glad the MAC is out of Detroit. It may be time to move the MAC Championship to Cleveland, IMO.

If true, then the MAC probably retains the tie-in, but who is on the other side?

I nominate the AAC. Temple is having nightmares.

Move the game to Indy or even Cincinnati.

Great. So not only would we hear jokes about fans going to Detroit for a bowl game destination, but we could hear jokes about fans going to Detroit and sitting outside in the beautiful late December weather for a bowl game.

If this 'Detroit Lions Bowl' (man, this is all getting so absurd) got running, any reason why the stadium couldn't host two bowls if the games are at least a couple days apart?

Wow, I completely misunderstood this quote and the tweet saying the LCB could move to Comerica. I was thinking the new bowl would be played in Comerica. Comerica would be good - the field is huge, so there should be plenty of room for a field. IF they could get an AQ conference, I kindal ike this idea.

I thought of that. But that game drew 50K fans. What's the best the M/LCB has drawn?

RE: Little Caesars Bowl going away?
When it comes to national exposure of winning a "big game," might as well concentrate on the September OOC games for signature wins.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not minimizing a bowl bid and I love watching the Broncos make it to a bowl game. And having multiple MAC teams in bowls is a whole lot better than, say, in 2000 when only the MACC champ got the honor. But the system has gotten so watered down, so silly and (as another poster said) so dysfunctional in recent years. This Detroit Lions Bowl, if it ever comes to fruition and squeezes out the LCB, is a joke waiting to happen. If this happens, I will pray hard that the teams are bad, weather is terrible, and attendance is extra terrible when that game is played.

So if you're looking to turn heads, pull off a game like Toledo-scUM, CMU-MSU, NIU-Alabama, Ohio-Pitt, WMU-Iowa, and so on. Those are remembered for a long time and make bigger splashes.

What AQ conference would want it?

The B1G and ACC are planning to play at Ford Field.

The B12 is only deep enough for 6 bowl games.

The SEC? Seriously?

End the bowl game. Keep the MAC Championship in Detroit and let Little Cesar's be a sponsor.

Honestly, an upper level MAC team will bring more fans to the game than a lower level ACC team.

I don't understand the Detriot Lions organization forcing the MAC out. We've placed our MAC championship and bowl game there for a while. The MAC administration may want to give a 2nd thought to supporting a stadium/organization that is not supporting the MAC.

The thing is, the NCAA needs to approve this new bowl. The NCAA has denied new bowls in Orlando, LA, and another bowl or 2. Why would they sanction another bowl in Detroit? And a year or 2 ago the NCAA said they were not approving anymore new bowls that woudl raise the # of bowls above 35.
