RE: ROW THE BOAT!!
"Row Your Boat" is somewhat fitting as Arcadia Creek goes under Waldo.

...except in 1973 when after the new AstroTurf had been installed and an unusually heavy rain, the Creek went THROUGH Waldo, causing the field to have to be torn out and redone.

I noticed several football players at the basketball game wearing shirts with RTB on the front and the Bronco logo with crossed oars on the sleeve. The shirt also had a shark, a runner and an ear of corn on it - I have no idea what all of that means.

It's the 3 attitudes he wants to establish:

Shark = Nekton Mentality
Runner = Prefontaine Pace
Corn = Farmer's Alliance

Motivational.

Combine that with good X's and O's and he might be onto something. Jimmy Johnson was known to use his own set of unique motivational techniques, plus he was a hellofa fb guy. That guy at Kent State was incredibly positive this year.

Hung out with a couple Bronco Football Alums this weekend. Their opinion of the "ROW THE BOAT" slogan and actually the whole hiring of coach Fleck was less than stellar. He better win and win early because many of the Bronco Football Alums arent overly impressed.

RE: ROW THE BOAT!!
I wonder if there is any underlying resentment around Fleck's NIU background?

Did you get any sense of that? I wouldn't ever accept a Chippewa for instance. Say a Dan LeFevre. No way.

With a Huskie, I don't feel that so much.

The guy is set up with a tough start. 2-4 wins the first year is very possible. Could he survive that?

RE: ROW THE BOAT!!
That wasnt the feeling I got. I dont think his NIU background had anything to do with the comments that were expressed. Although, I'm not 100% sure these guys didnt actually play against him.

All I know from the discussion is that there was quite a bit of disappointment in the way the entire hiring process was handled. They talked about Lester and Shafer being a part of the process until late and then either pulling their names out of the hat or being passed over because Dunn took control of things from KB.

One of the guys also talked about the way Fleck has treated some of the people around the program. Apparently, a few weeks ago, he insisted that the cheerleaders be present to open doors and be hostesses for the recruits that were in town. First of all, I'm not sure this is really a cheerleaders responsibility. Then one of them had her hands in her pockets and Fleck told her to take her hands out of her pockets becuase these kids already dont like the cold, and then just walked away. Never a thank you for them taking time out of their weekend to be forced to help him out. Little things like that have rubbed this particular guy the wrong way.

They ALL just roll their eyes regarding the Row The Boat slogan.

Obviously, this is on a much different level. But the reason Rich Rodriguez failed so miserably at UofM was because he immediately alienated the alums and boosters. I hope that Fleck doesnt make the same mistake early. The difference is, that I actually think Fleck understands how to interact and get those people on board a bit more than RR did, so he has a chance.

As for the guy starting 2-4 and surviving. He is going to start 1-3 and be 2-4 at best. KB and Dunn have tied their rope to the horse for at least a couple years, so he will survive that......for a while.

This might be the crankiest and most negative board in all of college football. Why is everyone always bitching, complaining, whining and looking for each and every flaw? smh

Well....I have two answers to your question BCBronco...

1. Negativity is a part some people. They can't get away from it.

and

2. We haven't experienced much success in football or basketball in the last 25 years. That tends to fester.

Not even close. This guy just relayed what he observed and heard and the opinion police come out and judge him? Please. Or rather, pweaasssee. 03-melodramatic

So anytime someone isn't singing the company line, they're going to get ridiculed? Hmmmmm.

RE: ROW THE BOAT!!
I'm just waiting for the "up a creek without a paddle" analogy to be made here during our difficult OOC games this fall.

I say let Fleck use all the tools he has in his toolchest to get the most out of our team. That includes sayings and symbols. He's young, he's hungry, and he wants to make a difference. Cheerleaders to greet recruits? Why not? the majority of schools do it. Say what you will about his inexperience as a HC, etc., etc., etc., he definitely does not do business as we're used to seeing. He's not the same ol' same ol'. And that's a GOOD thing! I look forward to seeing what he can do.

Whereswaldo24,

RichRod did not win, which is why he "fell out of favor". What rubbed peple the wrong way was his inability to win Big Ten games. The same will happen to Fleck if he is struggling, regardless of his Row the Boat stuff or not. If Fleck wins than I will row that damn boat right next to him.

Change is a good thing. Try to embrace it.

RE: ROW THE BOAT!!
Wow. Waldo relays what he's heard and gets beat down with the ol company line diatribes.

His motivational techniques are different, might just be what this culture needs is just that. Now please don't insult my intelligence reciting the party line once again, you guys sound worse than I did when I was pist about how they went about the firing and hiring process. How's that for some context?

RE: ROW THE BOAT!!
Most schools have female "hosts" that are attractive and join up to take the recruits around campus and stuff like that. Not sure I have heard of cheerleaders doing that sort of thing. I am willing to let him row the boat. But he better row it better than Cubit or molde did at a minimum. Change the culture but please try and hold onto the things that make us different than chimps... like the ability to have a different opinion. As a former player, I have a very big stake in what happens to this program. I stayed in kazoo partially because I love this school and this program. I am not a jock sniffer and will not be meeting fleck anytime soon but I will be hoping he takes us in a winning direction. I played for molde and the worst season we had was 7-4 twice and 7-3-1 twice.

Of course everyone can have and own their opinions. I think we ought to welcome all opinions. Continue to bring them on. NBFD.

So here goes: My opinion is this is a damn cranky, whiny, bitchy, unhappy know-it-all board who is perpetually dissatisfied for the sake of being dissatisfied. 03-hissyfit

Every reason to be cranky in here.

Doesn't mean we don't support and long for success.

Saw my first game in 1964 and hundreds of them since.
