Don't listen to him! The BOT made him post that.

I agree with you in that UAB supporters in general have proven to be fickle, and that is not all on the BOT. BUT, the BOT should be looking out for our best interests. We were in a position in football to start doing VERY WELL in the 2000s, and the BOT threatened to shut us down which wrecked recruiting. Then when losses started piling up, we started spiraling down out of control.
The new stadium could have helped restore us to a solid place in recruiting and campus life, but instead, it showed everyone that we are enslaved to the crimson overlords. It wrecked our chances to rise up quickly. Now, we're back to fighting a hard, uphill fight.
The good news is that the potential for great success at UAB is still there, as it has been since Gene showed up in the 70s. If we can ever break free of the crimson vice, maybe we'll start to reach that potential.

Yes, but I'm not sure that means he's done a poor job as AD. I think the job at hand would be more than most college AD's could handle. It took a Gene Bartow to fight the PTB in this state and get UAB into a conference with Memphis, Cincinnati, etc. There are very few people the caliber of Coach Bartow.
With our governance structure, UAB has to be one of the toughest AD jobs in the country at the FBS level.

"Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" is still valid. It is very difficult to separate what is happening due to BOT's "Body of Work" in obstructing UAB's athletic programs since "Black Friday" and what is solely due to our own actions / inactions. For instance, How much of our "lack of support" is due to the BOT interfering in our coaching search by blocking who we really wanted to hire and forcing UAB to take Coach Callaway who failed so miserably? How long has it been since we had a positive record in FB so we can know what it feels like to win? Now that we have a FB coach we chose, will we do any better? We can only wait to see if the results are more to our future advantage in spite of still having only the same renovated facilities Callaway got in his first year.

Would the BOT even let us buy our way out of CUSA if the BEast invited us?

(11-29-2012 10:14 PM)KevMo4UAB Wrote: This how Arkansas State answered these questions regarding the Sun Belt.
Dr. Tim Hudson, chancellor of Arkansas State University, and Terry Mohajir, director of athletics, issued the following statement today regarding changes in the Sun Belt Conference:
“Our Intercollegiate Athletics Department is always pursuing more revenue, more television exposure and more resources to field nationally recognized programs. We will consider any opportunities that could help us achieve our goals. Arkansas State is committed to the best interests of our student-athletes.”
And while all that may be true and would make us feel better as fans, it's probably not the most helpful comment politically. Mackin makes that comment and he gets a call from the C-USA commissioner and half the ADs wondering what's going on and why he would say something like that. There's just no need to say it that way; if he gets an invitation that puts UAB in a better position, nothing he's said would prevent him from making a different decision about the future. But right now, we are committed to C-USA. The fact that we have no better option is implicit. But just about every AD at a major school that has moved conferences in the past few years has said something similar to Mackin's comment at some point.

Recruiters at other schools have been telling recruits for years that UAB's football program was going to fold. The UA BOT screwed us royally that day!

Would our leaders even be allowed to board the airplane to go to that meeting? They were ordered not to even do that to talk contract with Jimbo Fisher when suddenly we had a coach whose name had never been mentioned prior to that confrontation INITIATED by the BOT. Using the cover of "Financial responsibility" and intra-institutional transfers, they have attacked the UAB Athletic programs ever since "Black Friday" in blatant and subtle ways. By framing all our plans as attacks on "responsibility", they can hobble UAB while the rest of the state cheers their "maturity".

How about how the BOT won't let us invest in our program to improve it either through a stadium or a coaching upgrade yet they are allowed to??? They want us to be run like a business like they run theirs & at some point in that business's life for it to improve you've got to spend money to make money or grow revenue. Again we're shot down at every opportunity to do so yet they do it all the time & with revenue brought in not by them but the 2 other universities w/in the system. They spent the money to hire Saban as well as the continual upgrades "to keep pace" with other programs on a national level but can we to even keep up w/in our own league??? You can sit here & say it's not the BOT & it's all our fault all you want but it is THEIR fault & many casual fans have been turned off by their behavior leading them away from our program (that is the only part that is our fault is the defections/shown lack of interest).

We need to accept Prop 48 players again and lower the academic requirements back to where they were when we were beginning to win games in football.
We obviously aren't getting the talent we once were. If we had the talent of the early to mid 2000's under this coaching staff, think about how good we could be.
