See if Kent St or Akron, or EMU fans have any sympathies about not going to a bowl for 4 years.
and they can't play for a national championship? for shame. welcome to the club.
I've got no sympathy for their BCS problems.
Have to agree. It's not the enema I was expecting (them to get).

Dear EA3,
They may have been totally different situations, (Southern Methodist and Pennsylvania State) however, with Southern Methodist never recovering from the death penalty, I think I agree with others here, that within a few years Pennsylvania State will be back in the saddle again as if nothing had happened.

I gotta agree, except for the $60MM fine and vacating of wins which won't really have any effect on the program, the penalty is really no harsher than USC / Reggie Bush. The Trojans are preseason #1 by some and they still are 10 schollies short I think.

RE: PSU going to get very hard Monday?
PSU will have a hard time recruiting out-of-state. In-state recruiting won't suffer nearly as much and Pennsylvania is talent-rich.
As a comparison, ask yourself if the same situation were to happen to Ohio State, would the high school kids and their parents around the state be any less fanatical about playing football for the Buckeyes? Out of state, playing for OSU would be almost taboo, but the Ohio kids would still want to go and their parents and bandwagoneers would still throw their money at the program, especially if most of the blame can be pinned on one or two fall-guys so they don't feel as guilty about supporting a program that's corrupted to the core.

That had as much to do with their slow recovery as the death penalty did. No such situation here.
This and Penn State is THE large public U in the state. SMU is a small private school surrounded by a bunch of schools most of which carry more clout in state. The two are hardly comparable.

I didn't realize that they only lost 10 schollies per year..that's not bad at all. Schit, Tod Kowalczyk can do that in his sleep...while hopping on one leg...with a basketball team. Penn states gonna b just fine. Their 15 man recruiting classes will still rank higher in points than any 25 man MAC class

I think your analysis leaves a lot out.
Recruiting classes at PSU starting maybe '13 but most certainly by '14 will be run of the mill - maybe among the worst in the B1G.
Probably in a few years, PSU will look a lot like Indiana or Minnesota.

I don't see it Ken.
IMO, PSU is gonna suffer for a solid 6 years. The 4 years of scholly reductions, and a solid 2 more after due to the time it requires to develop talent. And I think that's the best case scenerio.
Yeah, Pennsylvania kids will end up there after year 4. But in the meantime, the top talent in the state will most likely be avoiding it like the plague.
52 of 108 kids listed on their roster are from Pennsylvania. They get the top talent in the state every year, no doubt about that. I don't see them repeating that effort over the next 4 years though.

What you have stated about Southern Methodist program from 1951-73 is correct, however, I was referring to the seasons of 1980-84, when the Mustangs went 45-5-1, which I assert as a pretty darn good record, and powerful football team. This was just before they were put on the death penalty.
WHICH WAS WHEN THEY WERE CHEATING!
You can't look at their record when they were cheating as they had an unfair advantage.

Thats 10 the first year then 10 MORE the second year. They will be down to 65 in 2014-2017 with the 15 max incoming kids per year being included in that number.

RE: PSU going to get very hard Monday?
A lot of good players are going to have a chance to play at a Penn State - instead of a more mediocre football program with less tradition - who otherwise never could have. PSU's walk-ons will be better than half of the FBS scholarship recruits...it's not like they are going to drop to MAC or SunBelt level. The fans will still go to the games because it's the thing to do on Saturdays (tailgating, etc.) - they won't defect en masse to become what, Pitt fans? I think PSU will weather this easily, football-wise.

State Farm just pulled their sponsorship at PSU.
...correction they are pulling their sponsorship just from the PSU football team and keeping it in place for the other athletic teams.

SMU never "recovered" because they didn't want to go down that road again. To this day, June Jones is fighting tooth and nail to get any athlete that wouldn't get into the school under normal circumstances and failing mostly.
They chose to make themselves a Vanderbilt/Northwestern/Stanford type school when it comes to athletes after the death penalty.
Penn State will do no such thing.

It helps when PSU has 100k+ fans at every home game and is the premier program in a top 10 recruiting state.
SMU has/had oodles of competition in a top 5 recruiting state and certainly never approached the revenue or following the PSU.
And you are right...Penn State will do no such thing.

BTW, rumors are that RB Silas Reed is strongly considering USC.
Curious to see the 'first shoe to drop' and then what happens (2nd shoe, 3rd shoe, etc.).
The recruting/transfer saga for PSU begins AFTER the 1st big name player leaves the program.

Moody's considers downgrading Penn State credit rating
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/f...56457656/1
"Penn State has about $1 billion in debt, Moody's said. A downgrade could make it more expensive for Penn State to borrow money, which would be another long-term cost in a scandal that has already cost the school immeasurably."
