One of our non-playing walk on seniors was tweeting at 1 or 2 this am about stuff happening in the bar. This crap drove me crazy last season and seemed to be a real big issue last year with almost whole team.

At this point, I do not believe there is a twitter ban or a curfew. Players are free to make their own decisions and lets hope they are better than in years past. Today could be a day off from practice, which would mean they went out on a night when they didn't have to be sharp the next day. I am certainly not defending anyone because I don't know what was going on. And for the record, I am all for an in-season twitter ban.

Yesterday that question was ask of Coach and he is concerned about it, but recognizes that social media is here to stay. He did say that he has had players delete certain comments from their postings. He said that he does not want to get fired because of something that player has posted. Sounds like he is on top of it.

God forbid college students have a good time on the weekends. I really, really don't care unless it's the night before a game.

RE: Basketball News -
Great article on Chris Ortiz as a senior in high school being a role player and getting his act together. Wonderful kid, tweeted with him and watched his games on line when he was at South Kent Prep School in MA last year. And, he can't be all that bad because he loves chocolate and peanut butter....

Role model: Ortiz finds niche at Christ the King

ALBANY – The role of a senior on a high school basketball team is to lead, either by example or vocally, to take charge both in the locker room and on the court.
By definition, Chris Ortiz is a senior at Christ the King. But, after transferring back to the Middle Village school following one year at Lincoln, he struggled to find his niche.
“When I first came back I was a little shaky, didn’t want to try and do too much,” Ortiz said. “I had to accept I was still a first-year player on varsity, even though I’m a senior. I just tried to fall into place.”
Christina Santucci
Christ the King's Chris Ortiz cuts down the net following the CHSAA Class AA intersectional final.

It’s taken much of the season, but the 6-foot-7 forward has found his place on the Royals and is relishing his role. Corey Edwards is the passer, Omar Calhoun and T.J. Curry score the ball. Terrel Hunt is the enforcer and Ortiz? He’s the force down low.
“Coach told us everybody has a role on the team and I’ll do anything to win,” Ortiz said. “I don’t have to score any points the whole season. I’ll get 500 rebounds if I have to. All I really wanted was a championship. I didn’t want to leave high school without one.”
After being ruled ineligible last year at Lincoln, Ortiz never played for the Railsplitters and also never strayed too far from his brothers at Christ the King. He attended last year’s memorable CHSAA Class AA triple-overtime thriller against Bishop Loughlin and vowed to join his teammates on the court a year later.
Ortiz said his turning point this year came after the Royals challenging non-league schedule, which included trips to Fort Myers, Fla. for the City of Palms Classic, the Hoop Hall Classic in Springfield, Mass. and two treks to West Virginia.
That’s when he felt the “senior urgency,” that Mo Barrow, a senior last year who is now at Fairfield, described to him. It’s a term passed down from one graduating class to the next.
“That’s when it started kicking in,” Ortiz said. “I looked at the schedule and saw there wasn’t much time left.”
Christ the King coach Joe Arbitello immediately noticed the difference.
“People don’t rate team chemistry enough,” he said. “Teams have to find their way, find what they’re going to be good at and what they’re going to do and I think Chris was able to figure that out after he bonded with the team with the trips.”
Not coincidently, the Royals have won 13 consecutive games as Ortiz has emerged as a force inside while also showcasing his impressive range. Ortiz, who is being recruited by Penn State, Florida Atlantic and Siena but has yet to receive an offer, was instrumental in wins against St. Raymond and Rice. His work defensively set the tone as the Royals celebrated a second straight CHSAA ‘AA’ intersectional title.
This time Ortiz was on the court, not the stands.
“It was like déjà vu,” Ortiz said. “I saw myself with them when they were playing Loughlin, but it feels so much different actually experiencing it rather than just watching it.”
On Sunday, Ortiz will play in yet another championship game as the Royals meet the winner of Saturday’s Class AA semifinal between Boys & Girls and Mount Vernon at the Times Union Center. Christ the King is the defending New York State Federation champion and Ortiz is determined to go out with a bang.
“I’ve got one game left and I’m not trying to lose my last high school game ever,” Ortiz said. “I’m just focused on getting the win and whatever happens after that happens.”

Anybody hear how the non-public scrimmage vs St Bonaventure went? Has the starting 5 been established? I know that Senderoff/staff were really eager to see the team play against an opponent.

i guess we are becoming a football school! Would love to hear how it went. Players were tweeting about it prior to but nothing after i so gotta believe they were told to shut up or more likely they were more focused on Kent's big Halloween party.

I would like to know how basketball ticket sales are going. I got my season tickets and they seemed very eager to get the transaction done cause I heard the phones ringing in the background and they sad they were busy.....but with what, football, basketball, both?

One new basketball promotion they have this year is a faculty/staff package and they are trying to get the regional campuses involved.

It's hard to know exactly what is what since it's so "secret." Anyones sources could be flawed, wrong, or lying - there is no way to tell since it's so hush hush.

MAC Announces 2012-13 Men's Basketball Preseason Poll, All-MAC Teams
Updated 10/29/2012

CLEVELAND - The Ohio Bobcats and the Toledo Rockets have been selected to win their respective divisions in the 2012-13 MAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll. The poll was announced prior to the league's preseason media teleconference and was determined by a 24-member MAC News Media Panel. The Bobcats also garnered 16 votes to win the FirstEnergy MAC Men's Basketball Tournament. Ten of the league's top men's basketball players were also selected to the preseason All-MAC teams for the East and West Divisions as announced by the league office.

Ohio first-year Head Coach Jim Christian will welcome back 12 letterwinners, including five starters to a team that won the 2012 FirstEnergy MAC Men's Basketball Tournament before making a magical run to the NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16". Ohio’s 48 wins over the past two seasons are its most since the 1993-94 and 1994-95 campaigns and the 70 wins over the last three years are the most in program history. Christian enters his first season at Ohio after coaching at Kent State and most recently, TCU. The new head coach of the Bobcats owns the highest-winning percentage (.704) in Mid-American Conference history, He took the Golden Flashes to the postseason five times in six years and two MAC championships in the process.

The Bobcats were followed in the East Division preseason predictions by Akron, while Kent State was picked to finish third. Buffalo was tabbed to finish fourth, while Bowling Green and Miami rounded out this year's selections. The Zips also received six votes to take home the FirstEnergy MAC Tournament Title.

Toledo Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk is entering his third season at UT's helm and orchestrated a dramatic turnaround in the 2011-12 campaign. The Rockets registered the second-largest turnaround in NCAA Division I Basketball last year by compiling a 19-17 win-loss mark and advancing to post-season play for the first time in five years. The Rockets return their entire starting lineup, including second-team All-MAC honoree and junior Rian Pearson (16.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg) and 2011-12 MAC Freshman of the Year Julius Brown (11.9 ppg, 4.9 apg).

Eastern Michigan followed Toledo in the preseason rankings in second, while Western Michigan was selected to finish third. Ball State was picked to place fourth, while Northern Illinois and Central Michigan rounded out the West Division selections.

The West Division preseason All-MAC representatives are Toledo's Pearson and teammate Brown, Ball State's Jesse Berry, Northern Illinois' Abdel Nadar and Western Michigan's Nate Hutcheson.

The East Division squad is comprised of Ohio teammates D.J. Cooper and Walter Offutt, Akron’s Zeke Marshall, Buffalo's Javon McCrea and Bowling Green's A'uston Calhoun.

The MAC regular season gets underway on Friday, November 9 as seven MAC programs take the hardwood. Conference action begins on Wednesday, January 9 as all teams will start to fight for position in the FirstEnergy Men's Basketball Tournament that will take place on March 13-16 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

RE: Basketball News -
Mid-American

My pick: Ohio (East), Toledo (West) It's hard to bet against an Ohio team that reached the Sweet 16 and nearly knocked off North Carolina to earn a slot in the Elite Eight last season. D.J. Cooper (14.7 ppg) and Walter Offutt (12.4 ppg) lead a crew that returns all five starters. The West is more difficult to gauge. But Toledo's Rian Pearson (16.4 ppg) and every meaningful contributor from last season's 17-win campaign return. The Rockets can't compete in the postseason due to APR problems, but they can compete for the West title.

Greatest threat: Akron fans won't like this prediction. Zeke Marshall (10.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.8 bpg) is one of four returning starters for the Zips, reigning champs in the East. Eastern Michigan is deep and balanced. That's a great starting point for a run at the West crown.

X factor: Randal Holt is Kent State's only returning starter. But a few intriguing newcomers could make this season interesting for the Flashes in the East. There's pressure on Ball State's Bill Taylor. Players know it. Will Chris Bond (7.1 ppg) & Co. use that as fuel for a rally to the top of the West? A speedy recovery for Tyler Koch (6.6 ppg), who recently underwent surgery for a broken thumb, would help. Stay tuned.

Preseason MVP: D.J. Cooper, Ohio
