I have no problem with Pitino getting in the Hall. How many of his former players are already in the Naismith, BTW? I'm trying to gauge his footprint on the game...

Those are Naismith members themselves, I might add.

Wouldn't it occur to you that they'd know what his influence meant to their development as basketball greats?

That kinda blows holes in your "roll the ball out" BS if you think about it.

For that article to be in the public sphere right now, it sounds like a lot of people have issue with it. Otherwise, it would have never garnered the attention.

Are you sick? I never said I thought Lewis just rolled the ball out there. I said that was a common criticism of his coaching 30 years ago, and like it or not, it was.

As for the article "being in the public sphere", well, it's one article written by one AP writer. Apparently, other Naismith members, who don't have fond memories of Lewis as their coach, don't share their opinion.

Quo.. quo.. quo.. I suppose not. Guy V's candidacy has been put on hold 5 years.
This just shows what a blowhard you are. You comment before even doing your research. smh Although, you never offer up anything but rhetoric. It doesn't surprise me you'd comment on an article you didn't read.

Quote:If a candidate goes three straight years without passing through one of the initial screening committees, the candidate becomes ineligible for induction for the next five years. The hall says Lewis did not receive enough voter support between 2005-07 and was subsequently dropped from future ballots.

Lewis’ five years are up, and he’ll be eligible for induction into the class of 2013.

What a fool this "Homer" clown is. He falsely claims i said Lewis rolled out the ball and when he's called on it, he lacks the guts to admit he screwed up.

Then, he stupidly notes that Lewis's candidacy has been put on hold for 5 years, as if this somehow supports his stupid contention that Hall voters want him in, when all it really means is he lost out on the votes so many times that he reached the point where his candidacy was put on hold for 5 freaking years! The fact is that every time Hall voters have had a chance to vote on Lewis, they have said NO. Good Lord ... 01-wingedeagle

There is no doubt at all that he belongs in the Hall of Fame, none whatsoever.

What is the problem with the voters, I wonder?

03-lmfao My last 3 years of High School were spent 3 rows behind the Cougar bench at Hofheinz for what is now known as Phi Slama Jama.

You should thank the Lord above that: 1) the refs called 3 ticky tack first half fouls on Olajuwon in the finals, and 2) Drexler went pro a year early. Georgetown won its first title directly as a result of 1 and 2 above.

WTF? If Houston couldn't beat NC State with Drexler, how on earth could they beat the mighty 1984 Georgetown Hoyas, the best team the Big East has ever produced? 03-lmfao

I don't think the 84 Georgetown team would have beat the 83 Cougars (or the 83 Louisville squad). That said, Ewing was better than Olajuwon until about 1986 or 1987, and the team with the best player, especially if it's a center, always has a good chance.

Terry, i suspect it is because contemporary observers believed he was a great talent scout but weak game coach.

Poll 100 basketball writers about why Phi Slama never won a national title, and i bet 90% say "guy lewis's coaching".

8 pages of this tells me Coach Guy V. Lewis definitly belongs in the Naismith "Hall of Fame" and any other tribute that can be devised.

5 Final Fours
Game of the Century
Phi Slama Jama
and most of all a class act and visionary who was the first to see potential beyond skin color to intregrate college basketball.

RE: UPDATE: Players disappointed ex-UH coach Guy Lewis not getting call from Hall of Fame
Gang,

Lou Carnesseca is in the HOF with only ONE Final Four, and John Chaney is in the HOF with ZERO.

By contrast, Guy V. Lewis made FIVE Final Fours and two championship appearances.

Obviously, Guy Lewis was a good enough of a "game day" coach to win the Elite Eight games necessary to make more Final Fours than those HOFers, and as such, is every bit as good of a "game day" coach (and arguably a BETTER one) than they are.

So much for Quo Vadis' theory that he wasn't a good "game day" coach. If he wasn't, then why did he win more Elite Eight game days than those HOFers?

With that in mind, if those two are in the HOF, then Guy V. DEFINITELY belongs there as well.

For Lewis NOT to be there, in light of those facts, is both a disgrace, and evidence of East Coast media bias.

I never put for the theory that Guy wasn't a good game-day coach. What i did was explain, for the benefit of those who weren't around 30 years ago, that during the Phi Slamma era Lewis was regarded by many in the basketball and media community as being a guy who just rolled the ball out there and didn't do much coaching.

Like it or not, at the time Phi Slamma was in its heyday, lots and lots of people in basketball said it was Lewis's coaching that prevented that team from ever winning a national title. And that's probably why he isn't in the Hall.

As for other coaches with fewer accomplishments being in, no doubt that is true. But just because the Hall made a mistake by putting John Chaney and Lou Carneseca in, doesn't mean they should compound the mistake ...

For the benefit of those who weren't around 30 years ago, I don't remember this. If true, then whoever said this was a moron. Some people also said that Ted Williams sucked because he only hit .200 in his only World Series, but they're considered morons.

Chaney and Louie belong in the Hall.

We should close this thread.

I'd love to hear the logic behind Chaney and Carneseca not being deserving getting into the HOF.
