OT: Possible Move to Australia
Last night our CEO offered me the Vice President of Operations position at our facility in Seven Hills, New South Wales, Australia. All I know about Seven Hills is that it's close to Sydney. Has anyone here ever been to Australia? I have a month to decide if I want to go or not.

Thanks BCP
Not sure if I want to go or not. My wife was dead set against when I told her about it last night and today she tells me she might like to go...LOL
It's going to be a tough call either way.

RE: OT: Possible Move to Australia
How many more years until you retire?
Do you have children who will travel with you?
Do you have family commitments at home?

It sounds like a great opportunity for you to see a whole new part of the world. I am looking at a move to Germany that I was not excited about either, but have since warmed up to the idea. It is all in the way you look at it. God willing you can always return to your home!

It's a dingo offer, mate! 04-cheers

I've been to Australia, but I didn't spend any time around Sydney. I hit Melbourne, which is on the same coast. But I was only in and out of port, since I was sailing as a merchant marine at the time. Most of my time was spent around Perth, which is on the other side of the continent.

You'll like it Down Under. The climate's milder, although storms off the Pacific can generate a lot more fury than Atlantic storms. But Australia's off the beaten path, and doesn't get hit hard often.

The folks are friendly, and the beers always handy. Good tucker (that's food to us Yanks), too. 07-coffee3

Find out if they show BE games over there, and then make your decision based on the answer.03-lmfao

Just kidding of course, but it sounds like a great opportunity. I wish I had a chance to go back home to Sarasota Fl.

Any chance you can say you want to go "take a look" at it with your wife?

Enjoy a free vacation in Australia...then decide.

Personally, I would not accept that position WITHOUT taking my spouse down there first.

PS. The miserable flight down there (even in 1st class) might end up killing the thought of "flying back" to the States a few times per year.

Well, 18 hours in a plane can be a bit much. That's why I went sailing. 07-coffee3

If you choose to go, look into Dish Network. I believe that you can have two locations with the same bill, so if have family in the Louisville area, you'd be able to pick up those games on WHAS while down under. You could also have your boss have a dish at your location now, and take one with you.

There is always a slingbox as well.

Whatever you choose, good luck!

Congratulations!!!

I have been to Australia and Sydney. Is a wonderful place and you wil love it. Only thing wil be football withdrawal. So make sure you have some dish that allows you to catch games. They are crazy for Aussie football, which to be honest I didnt understand.
But the city is very nice, many things to do and the people are very friendly.

Slingbox might work, Dish Network nor DirecTV will work. Those satellites are not viewable from that side of the globe.

Seven Hills is a nice area and it would definitely be a fun place to live for a while. I lived for about a year in Dunedin, NZ; so not Australia but similar situation. I loved my time down in that part of the world, plus you will have the opportunity to watch the best Rugby in the world. Which will somewhat make up for the loss of live college football.

RE: OT: Possible Move to Australia
Guys,
First of all, thanks for all the well wishes. If we take the assignment I would look for it to be a permanent thing. It's in my wife's hands now. If she decides she wants to go, we'll be going. My boss called me about it again yesterday and said if she didn't like Australia, how about Europe? I just laughed. We didn't discuss where but we have a facility in Ireland and one coming on line in Germany.
We have always said we wanted to retire on a island somewhere. Australia is one big island.

I'd prefer Ireland or Germany, myself. But that's just personal preference. I lived in Germany for 3 years and loved it. And the bed and breakfast tour of Ireland I took was one of the nicest vacations ever. Australia is great too.

Tough choice, dude. 04-cheers

Ditto that.

My Ireland Castle/Golf tour was the greatest vacation I ever took in my life.

The Irish (unlike some Brits and Frenchies) LOVE "most" Americans...so that made a big difference too.

Of course the huge advantage both Ireland and Germany have over Australia...is that both are just about 1-2 hour flights from almost every country in Europe (obviously, via train too from Germany).

Ireland, Germany, or Australia...those are THREE great places to live!
