The thing is that the MAC is so flat institutionally - there really isn't much of a difference between any two schools when compared to any other FBS conference. Miami and EMU are probably as different as you can get, but it's a lot closer than UCF-Tulsa, FIU-Rice, etc, and that creates a lot of extreme competition that makes it tough for one school to rise up that high. When a coach does a good job they usually leave for greener pastures pretty early since standing out takes a lot and the MAC has so many elite coaches from here (e.g. Saban, Meyer) that P5 programs want to grab, and it's easy for their successor to not continue the momentum.

I have made a similar type argument (and people never seem to believe it) based around the fact that the MAC has 5 schools all in Ohio and not only that they are all public it makes it difficult for any of those teams (and thus a large part of the conference) to really differentiate themselves from one another
it is the same with Cal schools in the PAC, Texas schools in the Big 12 and ACC schools in NC and Texas schools in the CUSA *even though some of those are private)

I am kind of afraid to ask but what Ohio school are you forgetting? The MAC has 6 Ohio based schools. Kent State, Akron, Toledo, Bowling Green State, Miami, and Ohio.

I'd be guessing he's tangled up five Ohio schools in the MAC Eastern division & six Ohio schools in the MAC.
