"MACtion" Kick OFF - TexanMark - 10-31-2017 02:58 PM

The bane of MAC fans and the delight of CFB junkies.

Always nice to turn on the TV on Tues-Fri in November for games.

RE: "MACTION" Kick OFF - NIU007 - 10-31-2017 04:05 PM

Today:

Bowling Green at Kent State
Miami at Ohio

BG and Kent both struggling this year, big time. Should be a close game, I would think. Ohio looks good this year, Miami has potential but has been up and down.

Can't believe the NIU Toledo game on Thursday is stuck on ESPNU at 5 pm. That's stupid. Both teams 4-0 in the MAC, NIU is 6-2 while Toledo is 7-1 and getting votes for Top 25.

RE: "MACTION" Kick OFF - georgia_tech_swagger - 10-31-2017 04:51 PM

The bane of MAC fans? Do they hate midweek games that much?

I *love* getting a CFB game every single night of the week (save Monday, b/c ESPN is a coward to the NFL).

I wish the Sun Belt and C-USA and FCS would hop aboard so I could get this kinda action starting in September.

Couldn't agree more, though I suppose from ESPN's point of view it makes sense since Thursday night NFL games make college broadcasts less valuable those evenings. Although the argument for tonight being valuable enough for ESPN2 kinda flies out the window given how we're going head-to-head with the World Series.

Dreading tonight since our coach has gone 0-9 against our rivals since taking over in 2014. A loss more likely than not dooms our chances of a bowl while a win keeps us alive in the East division hunt. The MAC is a weird place.

GTS I heard some of our MAC posters complain about midweek games. Unless you live within 30 mins of the stadium it pretty much sucks in November for them...throw in some nights the weather is pretty frosty too add another irritant to them.

I know they love the TV visibility...but it comes at a cost to the players and the fans.

Yeah, midweek MACtion has decimated our season ticket base and attendance as a whole. I think we'll be lucky to crack 10k avg attendance this year... and that'll be our 3rd straight year averaging less than the 15k requirement

Sure, the ratings are solid and we are a competitive team, but the long term stability brings a lot of questions about viability at the FBS level to the forefront.

MACtion does a great job showcasing our best programs, but screws over about everyone else. Teams like Miami in 2003, NIU the season after the Orange Bowl, or WMU last year that can get well above 20K during a big year really look great on national TV. But for the remainder it's not easy going, there's nothing worse than playing Tuesday nights on ESPN3 like the bottom feeders sometimes do.

MACtion!!!

they need to stagger the starts though :(

MACtion!!!!!!!!!!

RE: "MACTION" Kick OFF - TodgeRodge - 10-31-2017 07:07 PM

I am taking Ohio and Bowling Green tonight

RE: "MACTION" Kick OFF - Attackcoog - 10-31-2017 07:22 PM

Honestly, I think the MAC has done a good job of carving out a nice niche for themselves with these early week games.

And how valuable is the exposure when the stadium is empty? There is no evidence that the overall recruiting has improved. So all they get is the money IMO. And it isn't that much to make up for ticking off the season ticket holders. Since we don't have many "Walmart" fans, ticking off the season ticket holders is a recipe for disaster. NIU has 5 weeknight games this year. That is excessive.

RE: "MACTION" Kick OFF - Love and Honor - 10-31-2017 08:08 PM

As many drawbacks MACtion has, people have said it's a disaster waiting to happen for years now. It's probably wearing away at our fan base a bit, but the alternative of no TV exposure and a fraction of the cash could be even more dangerous.

RE: "MACTION" Kick OFF - georgia_tech_swagger - 10-31-2017 08:40 PM

Now I can get behind the gripe of ESPN scheduling TWO conflicting MAC games for the same mid-week time slot and then choosing the most compelling of those two to air. I'd prefer for ESPN to throw their darts before the season on all the non-Thursday schedules. Pick one. Just one. Unless the second is a night cap kicking off at 11:30 PM ET from somewhere on the West Coast (MWC presumably).

I'd like to see what the attendance is for the mid-week game that is on ESPN/2/U vs ESPN3 as well as the mid-week game versus THE NEXT home game (to avoid higher attendance due to early season optimism skewing results).

Don't watch the NFL. The corporate slumlords Ted Turner sold the Atlanta Braves to are slowly but surely killing off my interest in baseball as well. Transporter room ... beam the away team to Athens, Ohio.

I'd say impose a conference wide limit of no more than two home games being mid-week. That's plenty of inventory for ESPN while still giving the season ticket holders at least 2/3 of the home games on a Saturday.

And I'd also say the NCAA should waive attendance recording for mid-week games that are mid-week for TV. Or if they're too stupid to do that (par for the NCAA) then force them to record the TV ratings as the stadium attendance. That'd be a nice middle finger to a dumb rule.

Problem is that the MAC only plays weeknight games in November, there is no Saturday control group anymore.

Regarding the rating and attendance requirement proposal, I just don't think it's necessary. The NCAA has shown no interest in enforcing the rule as it stands, they should just eliminate it and have teams just count butts in the seats to keep things consistent. At the end of the day fans don't win games, teams do. There's plenty of programs with near empty stadiums who'd kick the snot out of ECU or Tennessee.

Key word being plenty, not all. And unfortunately for GT you got them for the opener instead of this lame duck ***** Jones purgatory they're going through.

James Gardner putting on a receiving clinic tonight for Miami on ESPN2 if anyone is interested in tearing themself away from the World Series.

#5 giving a lesson on how to lose the game for your team what a dolt

45 yards in penalties

RE: "MACTION" Kick OFF - georgia_tech_swagger - 10-31-2017 09:59 PM

I don't think I've ever seen somebody get two unsportsmanlike penalties on the same down and get DQ'ed. Also, there's the matter of moving the other team 30 yards down the field in one go.
