The game plan was to stop the run. They did. And they won.
Win is a win... but we lost one of the best DC in the nation last year. Coach Pinkham was a huge loss.
Pinkham's great defense could not stop Ohio the entire 2nd half in the MACC last year. Thank god for Spillane's INT on the final drive!
Yeah, I know. It's almost as if he was in the right spot to make a play on the ball, and not getting whiplash from watching guys go by him.

Yes, hiring guys you don't know-have any experience with that may have different coaching philosophies-styles is a sure way to success in what may be your one shot at a head coaching job.

He was hired first. They are listed as Co-DCs.
Which I've always thought is a bad idea.
Yes it is a bad idea. Lester should have hired Duggan to be defensive coordinator. He has actually been successful in the position at the D1 level.
This is going to be an issue going forward. Is Lester going to be capable of making the changes to his staff that will be needed.
My point was that having Co-Coordinators is a bad idea, not Daoust as DC.
I agree you need 1 voice only as the OC or DC

RE: Fire Esposito
With our O not moving the ball much, we held them to 27pts on O. And solidly under 400 total yards. That's BGSU, on their upswing this 2nd half of the season.
Against NIU, we couldn't move the ball to save our lives. But we held NIU to 24pts.
I don't think losing our last two games were due to D being awful.

Our D held NIU to 17 points (there was a punt return TD).
NIU and BGSU was a teamwide failure, but Offense was the biggest culprit.

RE: Fire Esposito
Good point, yes. 17 for NIU with no O on our end, instead.
I'm surprised our O collapsed after the CMU & EMU games. It had juices flowing on BSU & Miss-St, too.
As far as our D's concerned, blaming Esposito would be silly.
2021: #1 YPG, but middle-of-pack in PPG
2022: #2 YPG, #2 PPG
And last year, that's with our O sucking balls even more than this year for most of it.
This year, we had a totally different team with new HC, especially on D, so an overhaul was coming on that front.
These last two games clearly weren't our D, as you say.
It was clearly our O somehow dropping like a rock.

Defense was a big problem, they couldn't get off the field. Long drives, points or not. It was bad. The Defense has to be better for us to win 5 or more next year. The schedule should be more manageable next season.
No excuses, time to coach better and recruit. I want to see progress in year 2. By his second year Lester had great receivers, good QB.

We had the same 6-6 records in Lester's Year 1 and Year 2, though we did get a bowl in Year 2.
2018 was the midseason collapse year. Started out pretty hot, then lost our last 4 of 5 games, which included the BSU OT heartbreaker and that game Ohio led us 45-0 at halftime @ Waldo.
However, I will say that if we don't get bowl eligible next season it'll be a pretty big letdown. I was sure we would next year after the CMU game, but those last two games left some bad taste in the mouth.

We were 7-5 in Lester's 2nd year and lost the bowl to BYU.

RE: Fire Esposito
Can we please get past Lester's tenure?
I wanted him to succeed, he had his shot, didn't get it done.
Was time to move on.
Now give Taylor his chance to build it the way he wants to.
I'm sure none of us are "happy" with 4-8 but really that was better than expected Pre-Season.
We beat both EMU and CMU. That's a good start.

I certainly don't think it's fair to compare expectations for Taylor in his 2nd year vs Lester based solely on the amount of talent Lester inherited vs what he left for Taylor.

Strictly from a Year 1 perspective, Lester did less with more while Taylor did more with less.

Both had the same problem: no juice in the passing game. It was hard watching the offense the first Lester year between Wassink and then Goddard. Eskridge was the only receiver of note to throw downfield to, and he's not a downfield guy. The cupboard there was not overflowing with options. Honestly, besides Corey Davis and Eskridge, Fleck did a poor job with WR depth. But looking at the MAC this year plus the portal, no team may ever have depth again--at least long-term. Running games are easier to build than passing games.
Maybe we should go full-on Wing T triple option with Hrabowski. I'm not kidding.

I wouldn't say Taylor did more than Lester (who had more), 1st year. But I would agree that Taylor did more with what he had, compared to Lester.
Quote:Honestly, besides Corey Davis and Eskridge, Fleck did a poor job with WR depth.
You forgot whats-his-face. The white slant receiver who left a year early for the draft, due to fear of injury as he sat out a couple years altogether prior, I believe. Bears picked him up but cut him at the end of preseason (shaking head). He was great. He was in the Top 10 nationally in receiving yards his 2nd to last year, when Davis was a few steps ahead. I believe we would have beaten Wisconsin in our bowl if he stayed, given that Davis was playing injured in the last games of the season.
