Good luck to him.

When Hurricane Hugo, one of the biggest, most dangerous storms in US history, hit Charleston in 1989, I lived in a condo on stilts at Seabrook Island...a Par 3 from the ocean.

Police woke me up at 5 am the day it hit and forced me to evacuate. I then spent until midnight driving to Atlanta in the biggest traffic jam of my life. But I lived to tell the story...

I was forced to leave my beautiful set of pro clubs in a locker on the ground floor of the clubhouse which sat...ON the beach.

Somehow, my clubs lived to tell the story, as well. That was a freaking miracle, lol.

I almost got into the insurance 'adjusting' biz due to that one ... lotta $$$ in that arena .... I should've gone that route vs. hangin' with corpshite 'murica ... @could'vewould'veshould've ... 03-wink

Hopefully they guessed right.

after Kat, I take nothing for granted ... that girl turned on dime ... I'm 60 miles inland...

IIRC, that surge was some 30' high/1 mile or so ... the power of h2O is simply amazing ... it's hardly an enigma our lineage looked to the skies in the 'beholden' ... it actually plays into the A=word ... #sigh #can'tGetPast=1

My parents used to live in Gulf Shores, they stayed for that cat3 that came through a couple years ago and it scared the hell out of my pops and we have had multiple tornados come through our property growing up. He said son it just never stopped, the wind kept going for hours. I got them back up in the TN hills now. The crazies can have the coast, plenty of fishing up here.

This storm is about to f*ck up a wide swath through Georgia

yep ... this won't end well for too many...

Atlanta is prepared to lose a lot of trees and have to deal with power outages. My sister down near Ft. Meyers says it hasn't been too bad there.

weather channel was talking about that. The pecan trees are almost ready for harvest so they are going to be very top heavy and are likely to get decimated.

Peanut crop also.

Maybe some cotton also.
been a rough spring and summer down there. The crop was late and now a lot will be destroyed.

Heard 200 people were still on Cedar Key which is expected to be completely underwater. 15-20 ft. storm surge in a big swath from the Suwanee River north to Carrabelle. 10-15 from there to Apalachicola and also from Suwanee River to Chassahowitzka. At 8PM it was 130 mph sustained winds.

My sister spoke too soon. Water is 2 feet from her house and she's a half mile from the bay and probably 3 miles from the Gulf.

Opal was a Cat 3 that tore up Georgia. I lived there then. Helene is a strong Cat 4 on essentially the same path.

Opal was a strong cat 4 and completely destroyed my place in Ft. Walton beach. We had fish in our drawers and cabinets and our pull out couch was actually across the street when we got there to assess the damage. It was devastating.

About 10 years later Ivan did the same thing. Jim Cantore was on the beach just off our back patio during Ivan. When Jim Cantore is there, you’ve got serious problems.

Great place to visit, but wouldn’t want to live there comes to mind.

Sometimes it’s nice to live in the backward woods of Appalachia. As long as you don’t live down in the holler nothing natural is going to get you. You southern guys stay safe.

Dang, you were right on the beach. I was talking about up into Georgia a ways, Opal was still a Cat 3. I was south of Atlanta. Slowed down by then but still a mess. That thing on the coast was a total disaster, as you said.

Helen moved east. Messed up Valdosta, Georgia. Did some damage towards Athens.
We never even lost power, yet. Lots of areas around us did. Behind us has no power, about half a dozen houses down the street and for about 2 miles south of there, a half mile to the east is a big batch of people without power. We are usually the first to lose power, but they did a lot of work on our grid a couple years ago. We had several days with 2 or 3 hours without power while they were working. It was almost annual it would go down, once for about 4 days. Water never quite got to my sister's house in Florida.

I just need to know if the oysters are OK. Hurricanes happen. Expect them and you won't be disappointed when they show up. Get a gas grill with a side burner and bathe in the creek. Americans have gotten so weak.

I spent a month running between Gulf Shores and Hattiesburg starting 5 days after Katrina hit. I've never seen so much destruction. It looked like a war zone in Gulfport and Biloxi with damage all the way up into Hattiesburg.

RE: Hurricane Helene
I sat through Hurricane Camille in 1969 in the barracks, when I was in the Navy. Then I evacuated at the last minute in 1989 for Hugo, leaving all my belongings in a condo on stilts, several hundred yards from the beach, and my golf clubs in the clubhouse across the street from the beach. I survived both times (as did my clubs, by some miracle), but I never want to do that again.

Reports last night that at least 40 are dead. Hurricanes are no joke.
