I'm with you, it needs to be easy: East Texas A&M...

Do they even offer enough stuff to qualify as a university.

They don't have a lot of doctoral programs, but have a couple as part of something like 40+ graduate programs to go along with their wide arrange of undergrad programs. Now, part of that is linked to the Federation of North Texas Area Universities: TWU, UNT and TXAMC. I don't believe they are a tier ranked research institution, but were ranked number "369 out of 439" in the latest USNWR.

Just call it East Texas A&M and be done with it.

Per a Tweet from A&M Commerce President, there will not be a vote to change the name of the university on this weeks BOR Meeting Agenda.

Happy that Texas State avoided being named "Southwest Texas State at San Marcos University."

Interview with Commerce AD. He states Texas A&M University Dallas at Commerce was a name which was never under consideration.

RE: Potential name change for A&M Commerce
From what I had heard (from someone very inside at the time), when the name changed from ETSU to Texas A&M-Commerce, folks were LIVID. Apparently, TAMU solicited alumni for name change support. According to my source at the time and thereafter, there was overwhelming support by alumni to make it East Texas A&M (just like West Texas A&M). However, the mother ship chose differently, and in turn, MILLIONS of dollars were pulled from athletic supporters/alumni. I know people who are alumni who have never been back since the name change. I also know there were several supporters who would get together and still call(ed) themselves ETSU Lions Lettermen Association.

It's crazy how much a name change can negatively impact a fan/alumni base. SWT people are still salty about us becoming TXST even though it's objectively a better name by a mile. We are still recovering. "I never went to TXST, I graduated from SWT!" is a common refrain. Definitely more than a few thousand SWTers that don't attend sporting events because of it, but on the flip side maybe our school would still be little ole SWT if we had never made the name change? Regardless the name change was the right move in our case.

I used to love the Pan American name. Oh well. Time marches on.

I spent my freshman year at Texas A&I and I remember the students and alumni there getting pretty upset later over becoming A-M. A&I had/has a pretty loyal fanbase and was the go to school for folks in the valley. the school is pretty much the same as it was in 1965/66.

When Tarleton was D2, I went to some games at Kingsville. The divide between the AMK and A&I alumni as there. The university had an alumni association, but the A&I faithful had their own unofficial "Official A&I Alumni Center" across the street from campus. A&I fans wore Porky logos while TAMUK fans used the "bottle cap opener".

Honestly, I always felt Tarleton would have the same challenge if one day they changed the name to TAMU-Stephenville. We are way more A&M friendly today, and vocal about our connection, than when I was in school. Back then, they sold shirt that said "where the hell is Texas A&M, 176 miles from Tarleton State".

Yes, this was a HUGE problem at Kingsville, as it was at Commerce. I don't think West Texas A&M had as much of a problem with it.

From what I understand, the name cannot be changed from Tarleton State University according to the deed once A&M took over. I'm sure, however, A&M System has enough pull and attorney power they could get it done.

Funny how these seemingly insignificant political battles flare up. I imagine when Texas Western became UTEP, there were some howls. Interestingly, El Paso was allowed to keep their coat of arms or school shield instead of getting the UT thing with "at El Paso" added to the outer ring. Kind of like when East Texas was allowed to keep blue and yellow colors, or Tarleton got to keep purple.

It's all about pride, which we all know is sinful. Lol

So it appears they moving forward with changing the name to East Texas A&M, which is moving more toward their past of East Texas State.

I don't hate it. If this a big push, I could see TARLETON A&M being kicked around. The law only states we must keep "Tarleton" in any proposed name change.

This should've been the NAME all along. As someone who grew up in the area and took courses there as EAST TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY I thought it was a blunder when you had West Texas A&M lead to follow.

A lot of alums will be ecstatic.

Sounds like the president started with the idea of putting Dallas in the name. Can understand the impulse.

However, once the name-change can of worms was opened, it became clear where folks really wanted to go.

I hope they get East Texas A&M. That is a great brand to me. It's historical and authentic. And, as RCI pointed out, Commerce sounds like some kind of business school to someone who doesn't know better.

It should be Tarleton A&M and probably would’ve been decades ago if NOT for the Dunderheads who thinks the Universe revolves around College Station.

It cost them UTA. Although I believe the UT system at present is a better fit for them.

Only other name to consider would be Central Texas A&M. Stephenville is only 1 hour away from the geographical center of Texas.

Stephenville never needs to be part of the equation just like Commerce should’ve never been in the equation
