You don't stand outside the chem lab waiting to chuck confetti at them after passing the exam for the term? lol

It's only fair that SA's can make money. Any other student could make unlimited money, but not SA's. Students, coaches, administrators could change schools anytime they wanted. But not SA's. It wasn't fair.

Now that things have changed people are unhappy. I liked the old way too. But I also know it wasn't fair to SA's. I think some guardrails to the portal and NIL need to be made. But I'm not mad at the SA's.

Completely agree. I have no problem with these NIL deals. Amateurism has been dead for a few decades, NIL just made it official.

Regarding transfer rules: 1 free one, then lose a year of eligibility for each subsequent transfer with the following exceptions:
1. Coaching change. I'm cool with an additional free transfer if the Head Coach that recruited you bails.
2. Medical Hardship. Take a major injury and want to transfer to be closer to home/somewhere where there is better care then additional free transfer is warranted. I'd also include a family hardship (family death, medical issue, etc) as part of this.

There maybe a few other reasons for an additional free transfer but basically the goal is to eliminate the free transfers because reasons.

I appreciate your support on the topic, but I don't agree with the restrictions of transfers. Coaches, administrators and regular students can move schools whenever they want. Why are we restricting athletes? Because we, the fans/viewers, don't want players transferring whenever they want.

I am a fan of "the way things used to be", I don't care for NIL or the transfer portal. But fair is fair.

Some competitive, non-sports programs have similar restrictions. Cheerleading, academic programs, engineering all have requirements for new entrants. It's not unheard of.

And they could still transfer in the old rules, just like every other student. But they had to wait a year. They still played the same number of years. In some cases. the players got better as they had an extra year of practice. The rules were designed to build a program, develop players and provide consistency for the school supporters. Amateur athletics was the goal.

Now, it proves what the rules designers feared. Schools with resources taking away players, others falling in the gaps. I've had to learn a new roster every year for the past four years. While there are certainly players who have transferred in and become fan favorites, I remember the promising ones who left more.

There are coaches who've lost their job because they couldn't adapt and others who've excelled. But the players weren' suffering under the old rules.

UTA put out a list of cumulative GPA and another for students who got a GPA above 3.50. Back in the day, the department put the major in the players bio in the media guide. Many broadcasters would say things like "the broadcast communications major just..."

I also don't know what the formula one team is majoring in. Or the debate team. Or the club sports teams. I still celebrate their wins.

RE: The Way It Should Be
I need a SUU fan, or someone with knowledge of SUU players and where they are as I was looking at Justin Miller as a perfect example of who I see as one who should be as the way it should be (At least the little of what I know). He came in late to SUU and stayed, having a great career. I know is he an atypical athlete. I was wondering where he is now though. He is listed as a Sr still on their roster, but has already played 5 seasons, and came from Snow College. Is he actually still there and playing this Fall? If not, does anyone know where he is because he is one I think would do well in the pros.

Thank you. We should, indeed, celebrate this special day. And we need to accept the responsibility to uphold our founders' ingenious insight for our unique country.

UTA has had a top notch engineering school for decades. They’ve been doing it for a while and are considered a top contender every year. They don’t host much local, so I’ve only heard of their exploits.

RE: The Way It Should Be
Well, IMO the way it should be is...
x Every day, even in off season like this, there should be interesting things happening regarding college athletics.
x We should be able to watch our favorite student athletes stay put as they go from freshmen to senior years, with few exceptions.
x Nobody should be getting paid to play, but IRL funds should be put in trust for some time after adulthood sets in.

Your thoughts?

Sounds like a plan to me. I miss getting attached to athletes as I watch them mature and improve. Now a lot of them are one and done. There is hardly any attachment or time for any. Fans are both team and individual in nature. We are losing the individual aspect.

Maybe grant a fifth year of eligibility for someone who has been there four years at one place.

That might appeal to a select few, but honestly most athletes now could care less. They aren't worried about degrees anyway so they aren't going to stay in one place just for the trophy of getting a 5th year. They want to be seen and get drafted early, so they will continue to transfer around into oblivion... Yes, that last sentence was indeed an oxymoron, but that's the reality of a large part of college athletics today.

True. It would incentivize marginal players to stay for year 5. Keeping these semi-pros for that 5th year also could negatively impact arena football. Still, I have a heart for the walk-ons, and would like to help them.

RE: The Way It Should Be
For every 100 college football players, 1.6 of them turn pro according to a search just done on my computer. Hmmm... so 98.4 student athletes move on to something else. I have known a lot of varsity athletes who were very good who also excelled in the classroom and became quite famous for their accomplishments later on. It is pretty special when a resume consists of excellence on the field and in the classroom. For me, the Way It Should Be is those that have played college sports should leverage that as an advantage whether playing pro or excellence in the workforce and parenting roles. For me, the goal of the NCAA should be production of excellent student/athletes.

I mean the student that stays in school, excels in the classroom as well as on the field, AND completes the degree. It's similar to what we discussed in the incentive for the 5th year player that stays put and doesn't transfer around. Most do not stay put and/or complete their degrees, let alone excel in their programs. Like RC mentions, there are certainly ones that do, but those are the exception now, not the rule. So, you get a large majority of students that don't stay in 1, or even 2, schools anymore, let alone finish and make it into the pros. Even if an athlete excels on the field doesn't mean they will excel after their careers are over. Those that excel in both the classroom AND on the field have such HUGE advantages but the athlete rarely thinks about that. There doesn't seem to be any long term thinking.

RE: The Way It Should Be
Okay, I think I get where you're going. You feel like "the student that stays in school, excels in the classroom as well as on the field, AND completes the degree" is the exception rather than the rule. I don't think that is necessarily true, or not to the extent you allege.

Compared to other students on campus, athletes make better grades and are more likely to graduate. Partly it is because the athletic departments are motivated to keep athletes academically eligible. That's why they provide academic coaches and tutors. Also, the athletes tend to be more energetic, motivated and disciplined than the average student. I know that UTA takes great pride in its Academic All-Americans.

So, unless I misunderstood what was being said, I have to disagree.

RE: The Way It Should Be
I truly believe that college sports are extremely valuable to future careers, no matter what that those careers might be. You learn so much including discipline, teamwork, and even leadership skills and more that can be very advantageous regardless of the student's future career. I have seen wonderful athletes who do not pursue professional sports careers become billionaires, leaders of communities, even Einstein Prize winners and so much more. College athletics are Valuable, very much so. What we see going on today tends to diminish the value of sports in my opinion. College athletics are not primarily to determine professional sports careers, they are much more than that. Sports enhances lifetime skills.

I do not want to see the NCAA, or whomever, diminish the great value sports provide students.
