RE: David Jones - would you stay or would you go?
Presently, it appears he will not be drafted. I guess a two-way contract like Lester's or join a G-League team like Kendric is possible.

I think his decision mainly rests on the amount of NIL money.

If Tiger fans want him to stay, they can do their part by contributing to the NIL collectives or make a private deal.

NIL contributions maybe made to the following collectives:
https://www.901fund.org/
And
https://www.bluffcitycollective.com/ (Basketball)

FWIW, I more than doubled my NIL funds from the last year. It is a meager amount, but together we can pool a large sum.

Wonder if the mods would consider pinning these NIL links at the top of the board.

Good call. Created a thread on it. See here: https://csnbbs.com/thread-989952.html

RE: David Jones - would you stay or would you go?
David is a great college bb player. He's not as selfish as some of you pretend. Great scorer, fierce rebounder. And he's never been called on to be a passer, but he was trying to learn late last year. I certainly hope he's back.

And of course Penny can help him. It's why so many other non-Tiger draft prospects come and workout with Penny leading up to the draft.

My concern is that it shapes up like another Lester. Penny was counting on Lester coming back the previous year, and all indications were that he would. Until the last minute and he decided to stay in. Good for him, and he's glad he did. But it put Penny in a bind in building the team.

He is good enough for the NBA.. but a terrible season with Memphis hurt his stock draft.. Hopefully, Penny doesn't implode next season SMH

He wasn't on the NBA radar before the season either. The season did not hurt his stock, he had no stock.

If anything, last season put him on the NBA radar, it certainly did not hurt is draft stock at all.

College basketball myths:
A team's bad season hurts an NBA prospects stock.
A team's bad season will hurt recruiting the next year.
A player transferring out is because he wanted to get away from the coach.
Players pick colleges because they want to win the NCAA tourney.

It's a new era, old timers.

Agree.

The players in the NIL era make college choices in the same way most of us make job choices. Money is a prime consideration and NIL provides the means.

Money will certainly play a role but I doubt it's the only role. A lot will depend on the information he gets during his tryouts. And that information will determine what he sees as best for him both in short-term money and long term prospects. With all that in the mix I do like the fact that Penny seems to be moving ahead with recruiting and I wouldn't be against holding open a scholarship if Jones does become available in a few months.

Penny will most certainly hold an open scholly. We have so many to fill, and there will be other late prospects even if Jones doesn't return. I think it's probably smart to hold one scholly when we have so many to fill anyway. We just don't need multiple starters waiting until August (or later) to join the team.

I'm onboard with all of this. And I truly hope David Jones makes the right decision for his future, whatever decision that may be.

I'm onboard with David's decision as long as his decision is to return to Memphis.

Honestly, he can probably make more money at UofM. His development can continue with Penny (I know that triggers some). It might truly be best for him in all areas to return to UofM.

I highly doubt it Jones return to Memphis.. He will go to the G League.. Since he is Dominican, he won't mind going overseas with a nice contract.

Penny should go for Johnell Davis from FAU.. He is in the transfer portal.. Davis can score and he is a leader on the floor.. A senior with Final 4 experience.

I've not seen his name in one mock draft, so I'm not sure what he's thinking/doing.

RE: David Jones - would you stay or would you go?
The good international contracts seem harder to get - or maybe it's that players in America are more reluctant to leave post-COVID. And the college NIL money can easily rival an average international contract.

He's not in the mock drafts, but neither was Quinones. I see this shaping up exactly like that one. He will get enough good feedback to go for an undrafted 2-way contract. Good news is that Penny - although he says he feels like DJ is 70% coming back - is not making the mistake he did with LQ. He's building a team without DJ.
