Basketball recruiting
Since the season is over I started looking at Burno's recruiting for next year. He he has a total of 2 offers out there according to 247. looking at the roster, Wiiliams, Gebrewhit and Ibarguen are the only listed seniors. I assume Williams, due to injuries, will get another year and maybe Gebrewhit will as well? Just surprised there isn't much recruiting activity going on with this staff. Perhaps it will pick up if we have transfers leaving, but does anyone know more information?

gotta believe Phil is gone--wasn't on bench last few games...Unfortunately, we are likely to lose a few good players in Portal...but, what the portal takes the portal can give back so Burno will certainly snag some players to replace whoever leaves. I have been impressed with Butler in the increased minutes all the injuries to others provided. Also, Mcpherson is a nice piece and muhammad can be good. Lovings-Watts will provide additional offense so I think the backcourt could be a strength. Need to get Yanic help with Harvin leaving.

I want to say Williams still qualifies for a Covid year, but I could be wrong. Either way, he will have another year of eligibility next year.
As for his offers, he has made substantially more offers than two.
According to VerbalCommits, he has made 8 offers to JUCO sophomores, 2 offers to JUCO freshmen and 17 offers to HS seniors.
He also has one player committed. Jayden Mott who is a 3.15*, 6'8" HS Power Forward from Oklahoma.

thanks for the info, not surprised that 247 is lacking om info for a MAC team. Is Mott already signed I don't recall seeing that in the early signing period. Hope we can hang on to Amos and Coit, 2 prime transfer portal candidates

Pretty sure Phil was a grad transfer so he would have been done after this year and it seems he had left the team anyway. Mott could take his scholarship spot. Since there was no Senior night it would appear everyone else could come back if they choose to do so.

Ibarguen is a senior. If he's got extra eligibility, it's news to me. Then again, all I can find right now is just one year at Seward County CC so maybe he does have another year but everywhere (including the NIU site) he's listed as a senior.
As for Gebrewhit, I heard somewhere (not sure from where and the level of validity) that he had a family issue or something that led to him leaving the team for a spell and since that time, I never even saw him on the bench in street clothes.
Seems like something happened in his life and he had to step away and didn't return. In looking at his social media, his Twitter (there are 3 accounts but I think I know which one is his current) seems to be active and he has nothing on there in his bio or profile about NIU and he's not followed by NIU or HuskieAtheltics or HuskieHoops, so...
Also, VerbalCommits seems buggy right now so I can't cross reference his X on that site currently.
Nevertheless, he's not on the team next year. Not sure why he disappeared but he's not on the team next year anyways...

Pretty sure they said everyone on the NIU roster could come back so I’m guessing Harvin has eligibility left. Williams certainly has eligibility left

Retaining Ibarguen is a positive. He's a hard worker, opportunistic scorer and good-to-really good bench player.
The guy I'd love to replace in the post is Durosinmi, though...I do appreciated him. He's just not that good and is one of the weakest links on the roster. Unfortunately, we need him for depth so unless they had another guy 6'10" or bigger...he's got a role to fill.
Then again, he seemed to get a little better (not foul so darn much) as the season progressed so maybe he'll be a decent 3rd post option and, for a team like NIU, you aren't going to have starter quality players filling up the depth chart.

Their head coach had a better winning % than our's. Hopefully Burno's leash is short if he has another bad season next year.

I bet Dee Brown( The former Proviso East
Dee Brown)gets that gig. He was an assistant there for 5 years and then went on to become head coach at Roosevelt University in Chicago and turned that program around in 2 years.

I don't know if Burno has connections to the former head coach at UIC, but should reach out for an assistant position. He recruited the city schools heavy.

RE: Basketball recruiting
Last game was Friday so I was kind of expecting someone to hit the portal today. Looks like (from what I can see), only one player from the MAC has hit the portal. Julius Ellerby (Eastern Michigan).
So, maybe that'll open the gates and guys who have had their season end will start to hit the portal.

The transfer portal/NIL is about to decimate the NIU basketball program. Good Luck to coach Burno he is going to need it!

IF Burno could go 14-10 to start next season, even then he would only be on par (47-70) with UIC's Yaklich. And let's be honest, the MAC ain't on par with MVC basketball.
Speaking of which, Mullins at SIU gets them into two NCAA tourneys and an NIT but gets canned with an 86-68 (five year) career ledger. The Salukis finished 19-13 losing a first-round MVC tourney game in double overtime to UIC. Still sounds better than not even making your conference tourney. Perhaps the SIU grad originally from Downers Grove would be willing to take another job close to his original home and the opportunity to use his Chicago connections for recruiting?

That might be one guy to reach out to. Rare to see a coach get canned with basically being in the hunt for the top of the MVC.

Why do we keep talking about Burno and the Chicago connections? He only has two players on the team from the Chicago area. Ironically, we have five players that are not US citizens. Maybe we should talk about his foreign connections?
