I see nothing wrong with hybrids, I could go for one. There's times when you have to compromise and this would be a great time. You get both worlds for long trips relying on ICE and electrical when shopping or doing what needs to be done in town. Plus, you don't have to worry about the electrical part not charging in frigid weather. COMPROMISE!

BUT, that's too simple...for simpletons. It's either or nothing.

Ford says its hybrid pickups are in high demand. Apparently construction and farm workers love having electricity wherever they are working. That makes a lot of sense.

Their fully electric trucks aren't doing very well.

"The bank’s analysts, led by Bank of America Institute Senior Economist David Michael Tinsley, found that after a post-pandemic EV craze that saw sales triple from 2021 to 2023, demand cooled off in the second half of last year. There are three main causes, they wrote: “a lack of affordability, limited choice, and ‘range anxiety,’” or the worry that people will be stranded, as infamously happened in Chicago this January, when consumers couldn’t charge their Teslas in negative 9-degree weather."

Take away the subsidies and EV's would sell even less.

Battery tech like solid state could fix all three of those concerns. the Toyota is “no matter how much progress” which seems to say even with great advances in battery tech EVs won’t makes up more than 30% of the global market.

Seems shortsighted since we don’t know what battery tech will do, which is what makes me think his opinion is posturing and and anti EV because he doesn’t have a competitor.

Actually, the shortsightedness on display was for the Fed gov't and a number of state gov'ts to mandate the phaseout of ICE vehicles for a complete changeover to EVs. As you point out, the current tech is woefully inadequate AND we DO NOT HAVE the generating capacity today to even support a minor increase in EV market penetration let alone complete market domination. There aren't enough resources to make all of the batteries needed to allow EVs to have the majority stake of the market let alone 100% of it.

The utter stupidity of people never fails to amaze me.

Between January and September 2023, the Toyota Group was the best-selling automotive manufacturer based on passenger car sales, selling over 7.9 million vehicles under its various brands. In 2022, the Toyota Group's eponymous subsidiary, Toyota, held the largest share of the global car market.Oct 27, 2023

There is a difference between best selling model vs best selling brand. This is something that should be readily apparent and should not have been assumed that Tesla is near the top brand for total sales in the world vs all other car manufacturers.

I can respect the Tesla brand and what Musk is trying to do with his vehicles. The major issue is the Feds and various states think the U.S. domestic car companies should imitate Tesla and attempt to scuttle their ICE vehicle operations. Just pure, unadulterated stupidity on the government's part.

The government should have NO INFLUENCE on which vehicles hit the market. Major over-reach that is to be expected when dems are in charge. Daddy government will make all your choices for you.

Let the damn market work and sort it out by itself. When it does, EVs will be way down on the list of desired vehicles.

That looks like the 2022 number. For 2023 Telsa grew 35% YoY. Are the other manufactures posting 35% increases year over year?

That chart also points out an issue with the opinion that electric will only be 30% of the market. Looking at BYDs sales on there Toyota discounts the massive popularity of EV in one of the largest markets. China alone represents 30% of the auto market and that is growing, and EVs are steadily increasing their market share. H1 2023 china EV sales were like 3.7M units.

I’m not saying that EVs are the fit for everyone, but they are a good fit for the the majority of people with home charging options right now and make for fantastically fun cars. Claiming they will never see more than 30% of the market is short sighted and probably posturing on the part of a CEO of a company without a viable EV so trying to downplay the market.

Lol

And China is building a dirty coal burning power plant at the rate of one a WEEK so that 30% “market” can plug their stupid slot cars in.

Rape the earth to save the earth.

Good plan, dummies.

Perhaps not on Musk’ part.

But it certainly is on the part of a BUNCH of hypocritical Pols cruising around in their armed motorcades or flying private all around the world.

They’re the ones mandating this, mandating that. By year blah blah.

Yea? How bout this instead?

No one was accusing either Musk or Tesla of being hypocritical. You perhaps missed the point.

I get the joke just fine. It would be much more meaningful (IMHO) if it was a critique of the companies that are trying to cannibalize their own ICE vehicle divisions to elevate their EV production facilities. Take Ford for example. They're trying to kill all of their ICE facilities (except the F150) for EVs.

Satire was much more nuanced in the past vs today. Just like journalism today vs yesterday there is a combination of less critical thinking plus laziness. You'd think with the prevalance of technology that precision and accuracy would increase. Only on the STEM side of the ledger I suppose....

I understand dry humor just fine. Also you should know by now my stance on the whole EV mandates to start but..... JMUDunk told me to GFY. I've been around enough for people to know my views. But say the "wrong thing"... and I get "told off". Tell me how that's any different from the mentality of your typical progressive.

I just read where 95% of EVs are still on the road.

The other 5% made it all the way home.

Keep pretending electric will not eventually the ICE. Some said the iron horse would never replace the horse. And if it ain’t electric it will be some other new tech.

I think most people agree electric vehicles will someday replace ICE vehicles. Or nuclear or whatever power source. But it will not be fully immersed into the mainstream for about another 20 -30 years AT THE EARLIEST. The REQUIRED charging stations across America simply are not available and take too long right now to be effective. Furthermore, the economies of scale to shift from ICE to electric (or whatever power source) will take time.

My concern mirrors a LARGE number of people - the hard push by some in this current Administration acting as if the shift to EVs must occur by 2030 or 35 is simply not feasible; it truly represents a horsesh1t fantasy goal.
