Presumably a third-tier sub-division.

You realize, of course, that Patriot schools offer the full 63 scholarships, four are among the 10 largest budgets in FCS football and six of the top 20?

Looking at on field results, the last time a Patriot League member advanced beyond the quarterfinals was 2003 (20 years ago) when Colgate advanced to the National Championship but lost. Since then, and including that year, playoff performance by conference is as follows...

Big Sky:
- 15 semifinal appearances among 4 schools
- 7 championship game appearances among 3 schools
- 1 national champion

CAA:
- 23 semifinal appearances among 9 schools
- 10 championship game appearances among 5 schools
- 5 national champions among 4 schools

MVFC:
- 24 semifinal appearances among 6 schools
- 16 championship game appearances among 5 schools
- 11 national champions among 2 schools

SOCO:
- 10 semifinal appearances among 5 schools
- 4 championship game appearances among 2 schools
- 3 national championships by 1 school

Southland:
- 9 semifinal appearances among 3 schools
- 3 championship game appearances by 1 school
- 1 national champion

The rest of FCS:
Colgate - 2003 runner up (Patriot)
Florida Atlantic - 2003 semifinal (Independent)
UMASS - 2006 runner up (Independent?)

Beyond the top 4/5 conferences, the competition drops off significantly based on playoff performance this century.

OVC had a runner up

Villanova/Gonzaga to the B1G for full Olympic/BB shares. Neither is AAU, but they're fine universities that would improve the BB league w/o taking any FB spots or FB shares. Also gives B1G a chance to show UND they can play nice w/ catholic schools, shows KU/UNC/UVa they care about BB.

Close the Southeast donut hole.

I think Tennessee and Alabama might be a stretch, (AAU/Academics, etc), but add the other 6, and it's an interesting 24, with several rivalries intact.

RE: Realignment fantasies that haven't been talked about
The Big Boys in the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and ND leave their conferences to form a 16-team Power-1 football conference.

Bama, Georgia, LSU, Flor,
Tenn, Tex, OK,
Flor St, Clem, ND
Mich, Ohio St, PSU, USC, Wash
Plus 1 more

Then the basketball blue bloods that also play FBS football form a power-1 basketball conference

UNC, Duke, NCSU, VA,
Cuse, Lou, KY, UConn,
MD, Mich St, Ind, ILL, PUR, UCLA,
Kan, Ariz, Memphis, Cincy,
plus 2 more

Then a Tier2 FBS football conference forms

Aub, Tex A&M, Ark, Ole Miss,
S. CAR, Miami, VT,
Neb, Iowa, Wisc, Minn, Ore
Col, Utah, Ariz St, BYU, TCU
Plus 1 more

Then an academic snob conference that also plays FBS football forms

NW, Rutgers, Vandy,
Wake, BC, Tulane, Rice,
SMU, Cal, Stan,
Plus 2 more

Illinois? Don't know about that, even Purdue is hardly a basketball blue blood considering they haven't been to a Final Four in over 4 decades.

And if you're gonna say Memphis, who has 1 official Final Four appearance and 3 even when you include vacated appearances, then you should definitely say Houston, considering we've been much better than them lately.

I have long thought there should be tournaments of "All The Tigers" or "All the Bulldogs" in ALL SPORTS, and whomever wins the overall standings gets to keep the name and everyone else should change theirs.

It would be highly entertaining because while LSU/Clemson would be crushing Princeton in football, they'd still have to grab some kids on campus to form teams to play in sports they don't have: Like squash, fencing and water polo and try their best or take a loss.

(Also if I was the almighty ruler of NCAA sports, one of my decrees would be that every Division I school must have a unique nickname that no one else has. I'd general go with the school that used the nickname first, but I'd also deviate from that occasionally if circumstances warranted it: Like USC vs Troy, where Troy would get to keep the name that literally means "Someone from Troy" while USC would have to change it because they are not from Troy).

B1G and BE merger
Doubles down on existing markets guaranteeing they have the top brands in the territory. (ie Wisconsin/Marquette, Indiana/Purdue/Butler, Nebraska/Creighton, Xavier/Ohio St, Rutgers/Seton Hall, Georgetown/Maryland) Locks up top brands in Northeastern cities (St Johns, Villanova, Providence) Brings in most of the top Catholic programs to a conference footprint that has a sizable Catholic population. Access to MSG. Adds a couple of decent hockey programs(UConn and PC) Gets number one team in MBB UConn.
