RE: Realignment fantasies that haven't been talked about
FBS and FCS overhaul…
New CFP subdivision = B1G vs SEC (72 teams):
36-team Western Conference (B1G + PAC + old Big 8/northern B12 schools) vs 36-team Southeastern Conference (SEC + ACC + old SWC/southern B12 schools). See full list of schools below…
Playoff structure:
12-team playoff = 4 conference semifinals (on campus) --> 4 regional semifinals (Atlanta, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Miami) --> national semifinals on New Year’s Day (New Orleans, Pasadena) --> national championship in Dallas
For the CFP subdivision, right sizing to 72 teams cuts some fat and eliminates lame duck schools that will soon lose their access to the playoffs while still retaining enough cupcakes to continue propping up the blue bloods.
New FCS subdivision = G5 + top FCS schools (100-130 teams):
American Athletic + CUSA + MAC + Mountain West + Sunbelt + Big Sky + CAA + Missouri Valley + Southern + United Athletic (plus Ivy/MEAC/SWAC if they commit to participating in the playoff).
Playoff structure:
24-team playoff = same as current FCS playoffs with national championship in Frisco (if the success of this format grows, which I think it will, maybe the championship moves to a larger stadium somewhere)
For the new FCS subdivision, adding the G5 schools to the top tier FCS schools while cutting the fat from the FCS (NEC, Pioneer, Patriot, etc.) would strengthen an already successful playoff format. G5 schools that are essentially weekday tv fillers with no shot at a meaningful postseason would have their shot at a championship against many former rivals that they left behind to become lame ducks in the FBS.
