RE: FAU Owls
We are now 5-6 when Gaines takes 10 or more shots in a game.

RE: FAU Owls
5-6 When EG takes 10 or more shots a game.

3-5 when He is our leading shot taker.

Crystal clear.

One more thing...

Johnell Davis and Eric Gaines both had 16 field goal attempts.

Davis: 10-16, 5-6, & 5-5 for 30 points.

Gaines: 5-16, 0-6, % 3-4 for 13 points.

No logical explanation on earth why gaines should be shooting so much.

RE: FAU Owls
Not to bash the guy but I have never seen why anyone thinks Gaines is a great basketball player. He can make some spectacular wide open dunks and he is an incredible athlete but as far as basketball skills for a guard I have never seen him as a great player. I am not even sure he should start or get over 20 minutes a game. I have never been impressed with his play and I was shocked to say the least when he got preseason player of the year, just have not ever seen it from him. I will say I thought Cameron Moore would never be good either watching him his first year at UAB and I was proven way wrong on that.

I figured we'd lose by 10 to 15 points and I got exactly what I expected. Even the second half comeback that falls short was pretty much to pattern.

This is a tough year. Lots of good parts on this team.

I agree. About the margin I expected. Doesn’t mean I like it before words are put in my mouth.

RE: FAU Owls
I hope the opportunity to two time-transfer applies to basketball, too. I don’t trust that these are the pieces that will improve and make a difference next season.

In football, we’ve been passed by UTSA.
In hoops, we’ve been passed by UNT and FAU.

Trent has cut a lot of fat this off-season. Still 6-7 more we should cut ties with and replace.

Andy has his work cut out for him in April, and this was his own doing.

RE: FAU Owls
Last I heard was the ncaa was not going to honor the two time transfer thing if they win the appeal. Has that appeal happened yet? If not, things could be quite wild next year.

I still think we have pieces in place for next year, we have to find the right guys around them though.

Yax is in a league of his own. He has to know that he is the best player on the court, and he has to play like it. His mentality is the only thing holding him back right now.
Butta is a very good college player. Him and Yax are two strong pieces to build around.

There is a drop off after that.

Coleman is improving. I think he can be a useful piece next year, but probably more as a bench guy.
Toney is an energy guy, but a UAB guy. He needs to be our 2-3 man off the bench and give a strong 15 minutes most nights. He doesn’t do anything tremendously, but he doesn’t do anything horribly either. You need these guys on a team.
Ortiz is what I thought he’d be. He’s a good scorer when he has space. He’s a terrible defender. He looked like Gaines trying to force the ball the past few games.
Vasquez has been disappointing so far to me, but I believe there is more to him than what we’ve largely seen.
I hope Satterfield is the real deal. A true PG with that size is something we haven’t seen in a while.
I think Dunning is a better player than the coaches do. I can’t figure out why he isn’t getting minutes, especially in games we are struggling as a whole.
Shaver needs to get fit and stronger. Maybe in a year he’s a different guy.
Hargrove doesn’t count.

We have a lot of starting positions that I would be selling as wide open competitions for next season. We need some guys who can shoot/score and we need a real pg. We also definitely need another big. I think we will lose some guys this offseason like we always do, and we will rebuild the same way we always do.

RE: FAU Owls
I've been trying to watch the game on espn website. I can only stand watching a few plays at a time before I get a strong urge to vomit all over my computer. I have to pause it and shift to something else less horrific like people torturing animals on youtube or the end of the crying game.

The box score results are almost as bad.

I think this is a fair and reasonable assessment of where we are right now. I don’t believe in being overly critical of college athletes, and you have stayed inbounds here. Good job.

RE: FAU Owls
We have some good pieces.

Yax could be elite. But he’s raw and his assertiveness to really be “the man” has been lacking so far. He’s our best player.

Vasquez is a good player. He’s better than he’s shown so far. Very inconsistent and injured and foul prone so far. I think Gaines coming back probably has inhibited him the most.

Butta is just solid. Can score at all three levels, rebound, and plays hard. His athleticism doesn’t jump off the screen at you but he’s pretty much good at just about everything you want a guard to be, but not elite. He’s a really solid to good college player. I will look forward to watching him develop and really hope he stays all 4 years.

Coleman is raw as sashimi. He’s done better and grown more into his 6th man roll. I’m still not really sure what he is as a player or what he’s really good at. He could be elite in a trapping, pressing style defense that AK refuses to run.

Toney is an energy glue guy that plays hard as hell but doesn’t have a ton of great skills. Every team wants a guy like him on the roster.

I don’t know what we have in dunning, but I think he’s good, but AK refuses to play him.

Shaver - who knows? Obviously needs to get in better shape and get up to game speed, but there was obviously potential with him.

I like those pieces. We need to flesh out the rest of the roster though. It’s glaringly obvious we need point guards and shooters / 2 things AK is apparently allergic to as a coach.

I hope this is unrelated to the discussion on pieces coming back next year bc I hope Gaines is gone, but I personally think Gaines coming back has inhibited butta and Vasquez a good bit. He’s turned into a high utilization, super low efficiency player. He hurts the team if he takes more than 10 shots. He should probably take 5-7 shots. We are much better with him being a pass first, conservative, smarter player. Will he even make the conference honorable mention list?

I like to follow recruiting and the portal, but the bottom line is that we won't know what we have until after the spring game. Kind of takes the edge off for me.
