BV is a great guy. I like him, and HOPE he does great...but...

he was OC at a G5 school where much of the fanbase wanted him fired, thinking that he was the weak link holding a pretty good team back from being great. Somehow, he turned that into an interim HC position...that one year was a complete failure and fell WAY short of expectations.

on paper, there's really no good reason to think that he'd get offered any head coaching job. if La-Monroe offers, he should jump on it

Per Mark Ingram, there are some that would, but they wouldn’t be upper tier P5 teams. We were more focused on getting winnable games when we started the program back.

If that’s true he’s pathetic at his job.

It is true. We said no to a HH with a P5 mid level program. Also was told several teams that would play us but we don’t have an opening for a while.

I know the teams but since I was told in private not dropping the names.

I can’t fault him for that. You typically schedule these games several years out. Coming back from The Return, we really didn’t know how good or bad the team would be. He was looking for winnable games.

Non upper tier P5 home games aren’t winnable? I fault him for not jumping on one of these a year.

Yep. Those are huge missed opportunities.

Since The Return, even with Clark, we’ve struggled against lower G5 teams in OOC play.

Other than getting a fat check, we usually got injuries and humiliated by good P-5 teams. We hung in there with Mississippi State that time, and was OK at Texas A&M. The worst was getting punked by a really bad Florida team with half its starters missing.............and getting Hopkins killed in Knoxville.

I may just be ignorant to how much that check helps us, but on the surface it can’t possibly be worth the beat down. We have scheduled top 5-10 team in the country almost what 3-4 seasons in a row? It kills any momentum you have to go get drummed by a Georgia and your good players basically having a tryout. Get me a Virginia or something that we can possibly win and build momentum off of. After 4-5 seasons of winning a few P5 games then go up a level. I’d be curious to see a break down of how much more money we make if UAB starts 4-0 in a season with a win like that with home crowd and such. It’s hard to earn the respect of SEC secondary fans when we get destroyed.

We get somewhere between $1.8-2.3 mil as of late from buy games. That’s a good quick pay day. That’s about a 3rd to half of what was pledged over 5 years by fans when we reinstated this program. Don’t get me wrong, playing the games are destructive for perspective recruiting and drawing casuals. On top of losing 5-10 of your players to injuries because they physically aren’t ready to face power 5 size, depth, training or conditioning.

Seems everybody in our league has hosted a P5 home game over the last few years.

I think we need to just cut the pay day in half and player a lower caliber. I’d love to be wrong but we aren’t beating a Georgia or LSU right now. Miracles can happen but I’d love to be playing power tier ACC teams or something and getting a resume.

The name doesn’t matter, we all know what schools we consider those to be. I understand the paycheck of the elite teams, but bringing a p5 team to Birmingham is a big deal, even if it’s on the lower end.

100.

it’s AD malpractice to not get teams like that to come to Birmingham. And he just got a contract extension. Yay.

Agreed. Mississippi State is a no brainer to me. There is a fairly large MSU alumni group living in the B’ham area.

Not really pleased with the lazy scheduling down the line where we have a 4 game series with Troy and ga state, either. That just seems like, “let’s make this happen, so it’s less games we have to account for in scheduling”

Have already accepted the fact that I’ll be sitting in the middle of 20k Alabama state fans, as a UAB season ticket holder. That’s going to be awkward.

I’m not pleased with the lackluster scheduling as well.

Hope BV gets a HC gig.

Yeah, but every G5 AD wants to schedule the P5 bottom feeders. Add that those P5 teams want at least one (if not more) of their OOCs to be home games against the Little Sisters of the Poor for the W and the ticket sales. Going on the road against a solid to good G5 is a risk their AD's don't like to take. They're balancing their strength of schedule versus the risk of taking a loss.
