We know that it's coming....... Who will suffer the epitomy of brutality as Jon Rothstein always calls it.

I was wondering why IUPUI would be playing at 11am on a Monday.

Found the answer on their website:

Quote:To borrow a phrase from Reese Bobby from the classic Talladega Nights, "If you ain't first, you're last...", it applies to the Jaguars start to hoops season. In tipping off its 2023-24 season with an 11:00 a.m. start, the IUPUI basketball team will be the first team in the country to open up its campaign on Monday (Nov. 6) when the Jaguars host Spalding University for the annual NCAA Readers Become Leaders Day at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. More than 4,000 elementary and middle school aged students from across Central Indiana are expected to fill the Coliseum as part of the annual partnership between IUPUI, the NCAA, WISH-TV, Scholastic Books and the Indianapolis Public Library.

The IUPUI game is not one I would have wanted to attend, full of kids, but it’s a nice thing to do, fun for the kids, and is for a good cause.

Attending a live D1 college basketball game would be a big deal to a lot of kids. Good for the school too. Gets their name and mascot into a lot of young minds.

That ULM performance may hold as the least points scored by a D1 team this season. Last year, Texas destroyed Houston Christian really early on (maybe even the first game), and it held. Same mark at 31.

Elsewhere, and ironically in WCC where SMC and USF massacred their opponents, Sonoma State almost had San Diego. They were up 12 at the half, and lost by 4. Pepperdine had challenges with Concordia, and were down 5 at the half there.

Coastal squeaked by Piedmont in the final 20 seconds or so.

Of course, Presby over Vandy 68-62 needs to be here.

Purdue Fort Wayne 82
DePaul 74

A stunning 931 people showed up for this game where Fort Wayne basically held the lead for something like 75% of the game. Vegas had DePaul as 11.5-point favorites.

Anyone have FGCU covering the spread against Indiana? The lead only ever got to double digits with under four minutes left and even that didn't hold up.

As somebody who has followed Vanderbilt, DePaul and Indiana hoops for many years ... a few thoughts.

I watched the bulk of the Vandy game and it was a disaster. To be fair, we were without three key players: our best player/top scorer, a transfer who is expected to start and a 6-11 center who might start and, if not, be in the nine-man rotation. No excuse — but perhaps an explanation. Our 3-point and free-throw shooting were horrendous last night. Full props to the Blue Hose for the win.

As to DePaul (did not watch the game), and from what I can determine based on watching lots of Blue Demon games last year and "assessing" the newcomers based on stats ... this team simply lacks size and skill. This could be the worst season in years for DU (and there have been many bad ones). Ten wins would be a success.

Indiana (I did not watch the game) seemingly has the potential to be solid and competitive. I'm not ready to panic. But last night's underwhelming win is a bit concerning.

I have been to some DePaul games at Wintrust against a St. John's or Seton Hall where there were only 1-2k people in the building, but the reported attendance was 4-5k.

It's a beautiful arena connected to McCormick Place. If you're an out of towner, you can stay in a hotel and walk in an indoor pathway to Wintrust Arena without stepping outside.

I've never been to the Wintrust. Glad you have enjoyed.

Most of the DePaul home games I watched on TV last season suggested no more than 1,000 to 2,000 (if that), as you correctly note.

It's unfortunate for the university and for Chicago.

Reading several of the Big East team message boards, fans seem ready to boot Depaul out of the conference.

I don't blame them for feeling that way.

I'm old to enough to recall when DePaul in the 1970s and 1980s was nationally relevant. I began cheering for the program in 1987, when it still was highly respectable.

Those days are long gone.

Honestly, there are D3 schools in hoops with better support the DePaul.
