Could SMU make the Big Ten?
I have a hard time seeing the Big Ten being content to be completely shut out of Texas if and when it expands to 24. Would it be that much of a stretch to take SMU if the ACC Grant of Rights is breached? SMU could even theoretically get out cheaper as they are receiving no or limited distributions from the current ACC media deal.

If the Big Ten needed another snotty rich private school from Texas, we'll take TCU. Right now even Baylor has more value despite not being in DFW, they won a men's basketball national championship in 2021.

Suit yourself, but historically, TCU has generally had the poorer alumni base of the two.. SMU's biggest problem was overreacting from the "death penalty.'

If we were choosing Big Ten schools by how wealthy the alum were, I'd take Rice. Or better yet Stanford.

if the Big Ten goes into Texas, it'll be by convincing UT Austin's academic leadership to leave the SEC in order to associate with their fellow top state public ivies as well as make even more money, not through SMU.

The jury is still out on how much money SMU alumni will spend to win football games. They’ve been willing to spend enough to get invited to the ACC…building facilities, funding NIL, and foregoing media payouts. Maybe SMU alumni will be satisfied by being part of the club…rubbing elbows with alums from Stanford, Duke, Notre Dame, Florida State, et al.
Actually winning ACC football championships is going to take a much bigger commitment. On the other hand, Rice and their alumni has not had any serious financial effort towards competing in higher-level football during the past half century.

TCU and SMU are not AAU. They would take Rice and Tulane in a heartbeat than any of those schools you listed since those three are not AAU and two of them are R2.

Houston makes more sense, academically (R1, ahead of some AAU metrics already and actively investing in pursuit of membership), large state institution, solid athletics, ok brand. Bit urban for the B1G, tho. If they obtain AAU, are successful in the B12 in FB/BB, and expand their stadium, maybe they might have a shot if there's a spot in 10 or 12 years, but still super doubtful. Have to think B1G really only was interested in UT/A&M, and that ship has sailed.

I have a lot of respect for SMU, bu there's nothing to make them stand out ahead of TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor or UH. The problem with Texas is that there really is no 3rd school.

True. As a lifelong Texan (despite my favorite teams), I see tiers with Texas universities:
Tier I - Texas, Texas A&M
Tier II - Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech
Tier III - Houston, SMU
Tier IV - North Texas, Rice, Texas St, UTEP, UTSA
Tier V - Lamar, Sam Houston St, Stephen F. Austin St, Texas - Arlington
Tier VI - Abilene Christian, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Prairie View A&M, Tarleton St, Texas A&M - Commerce, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, Texas Southern, UTRGV
